For anything of interest to Sailors! This is primarily a US Navy-centric subreddit, but all are welcome. REMEMBER OPSEC. Do not post your command name! Post pre-bootcamp, pre-commissioning questions in NewToTheNavy. READ THE WIKI (www.reddit.com/navy/wiki) and do a search before posting--if you're about to ask "I'm arriving at my first command/going on my first deployment..." it's likely already been answered.

2023.06.02 07:35 ColorGoreAndBigTeeth Good Ending Achieved - Finally Escaping Retail!

I'm finally escaping the minimum wage doom spiral! I work at a large chain pet store - before this job I worked at a large chain coffee and donut company and before that I worked at a retail crafts store. I have been so burnt out and so depressed and I figured that minimum wage retail cashier or food service jockey was going to be etched onto my coffin. I finally found myself hired for a big kid job - background investigator for an agency. I just need to pass a background check myself lol.
I want to give some advice for others looking to claw their way out of the system.
For company jobs, don't rely solely on sites like Indeed to find jobs. Google a job you are interested in and end the search with "careers" (quotations added). Look through the big names likes Indeed but also check the searches beneath them - a lot of bigger companies advertise careers directly on their site instead of on job search engines. Go to job fairs at locations like colleges to find companies that are a good fit. Some state governments also have job fair schedules or virtual job fairs on their website. Take community classes in your area to learn skills that can be of use in a future job you want to do - some of these community classes are paid but some of them are free in places like libraries. Apply to jobs that have qualifications that might be higher than what you currently have. Most companies need people really badly and will invest in training you to that advertised qualification.
Government jobs or jobs with government contractors is about the best thing you can do to get out of the retail system and once you're in with them at entry level you have amazing opportunities to get in somewhere doing something you love. Benefits, pay, and full-time hours are great. The rules above also apply here in searching for contractor jobs. Check out what's open on usajobs.gov or fbijobs.gov there are a lot of positions for entry level like terrorist dispatch, data entry, secretary, or trainee.
I hope some of this advice helped you guys. I want everyone to get out of the flaming cesspit that is retail and food service. It's miserable and draining and I think everyone here deserves so much more than it.

2023.06.02 07:28 Afoolfortheeons 32 [M4R] Portland, OR - Hello from across the electric sea!

Hi everybody! My name's Victorious, but you can call me Vic. If I were to toot my own horn, I would say I'm a pretty interesting specimen of the human species. If aliens were to abduct me, and they have, they would use the biggest probe on me as possible, for purely scientific reasons, and not because I requested it.
In short, I'm a neato little weirdo with big dreams. For instance, I want to start an educational nonprofit where we teach philosophy, spirituality, and mental health skills to help people self-actualize. That's just one of my goals. I also want a cookie, but those are easy to get.
I live an interesting life. I once thought the CIA was training me for a mission. That lasted six crazy years, and I radically transformed myself as a result. Doctors say I'm schizoaffective and autistic, but who trusts doctors? That's a bit of a joke, but honestly, being differently abled has major perks. It's like I have superpowers, and that makes me the best candidate for president for the United States. The CIA told me so.
I like joking about my mental health. It's better to laugh at oneself than to perceive the world through a pessimistic lens. That's why I was hoping to find a person who gets that being different is not a bad thing. Truly, as we approach the singularity, the most useful of us will be those who think fundamentally differently.
So, if my ad caught your interest, shoot me a message and let's get talking. For now, I'll end on a poem that imma write straight from the dome:
I've lived thirty-two long years
And I now have quite the story
But lemme tell you of my fears
What if nobody ever loves me?
Alone and surrounded by others
With not a single person caring
Where are my sisters & brothers?
We have so much to be sharing
So I hope this message I write
Finds itself in front of the eyes
Of those who see me with delight
Thus I am myself without disguise
I am Victorious and hear me roar
Nothing will stop me being me
For I am what you're looking for

2023.06.02 06:59 _-_-_TabIthA_-_-_ 36 [F4M] #Pennsylvania - Seeking older nudist man who wants a loving and affectionate long-term relationship Possibly willing to relocate if I were to find a genuine connection with the right person

Hi there! So I'm 36 years old from Pennsylvania. I have always had a thing for much older men and don't even really know why exactly. Part of it might be that I've always been very mature for my age and tend to get along much better with people who are older than me. The idea of being in a committed long-term relationship with someone older just feels right and natural to me. I am somewhat of a traditional person and do want to be properly married at some point.
Like the title says, I am willing to relocate if I find a genuine connection with the right person, but I would strongly prefer to remain on this continent, so that means please only message me if you're in the United States or Canada.
I also don't want you to message me if you're into the whole dom/sub dynamic or daddy/daughter dynamic; I'm not interested in those dynamics at all. I'm just a traditional woman. I'm a very loving and affectionate person by nature and a strong believer in romantic love, and I just want to find my one-and-only who I can fall deeply in love with and devote myself to forever. I'm the type who sees human sexuality as a very deep and meaningful act of affection between two people who are in love, and I would rather make love than just have sex for the sake of sex. Looks aren't really important to me; I'm the type of person who bases romantic attraction on personality and chemistry more than anything else.
In the spring and summer, I regularly attend an all-ages family nudist camp that is near me. My mother raised me to be a social nudist, so I have been going there all my life. I'm not one of those nudists who is nude at home all the time; for me it's more of a social thing that I do at a family-oriented camp environment. I find the social cohesion in an environment like that creates friendships and bonds that are unlike any social dynamic that you would ever find in any other regular social situation. My own theory regarding this is that it triggers a dormant social-cohesion mechanism in the human psyche that we had way back in our early history when we were living in small communal tribes. Back then, it was probably more normal for people to be casually nude if they wanted to be during the warmer months because everybody knew everybody and nobody was a stranger, and I think that kind of thing would kind of solidify your bond with the tribe. That's just my theory anyways, but it makes a lot of sense because I'm friends with families at that camp and am much closer to them than I am with anybody outside of the camp.
But if you think that your lifestyle values align with mine, free to message me in chat, and we'll see what kind of chemistry we have! 😊

2023.06.02 06:56 autotldr US retaliates for Russia's suspension of New START treaty by revoking visas of nuclear inspectors

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 53%. (I'm a bot)
OSLO, Norway - The Biden administration is retaliating for Russia's suspension of the New START nuclear treaty, announcing Thursday it is revoking the visas of Russian nuclear inspectors, denying pending applications for new monitors and canceling standard clearances for Russian aircraft to enter U.S. airspace.
The State Department said it was taking those steps and others in response to Russia's "Ongoing violations" of New START, the last arms control treaty remaining between the two countries, which are currently at severe odds over the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The U.S. will continue to notify Russia when it conducts test launches, it said, adding that the steps it was taking were reversible provided Moscow returns to compliance with the treaty.
Russia suspended its participation in New START in February in a move that the U.S. said was "Legally invalid." Immediately afterward Moscow curtailed its adherence to the accord.
Despite being extended shortly after President Joe Biden took office in January 2021, New START has been severely tested by Russia's war in Ukraine and has been on life support for since Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Russia would no longer comply with its requirements.
"The United States remains ready to work constructively with Russia on resuming implementation of the New START Treaty," it said.

Electric Vehicle Battery Market Growth 2023, Revenue, Trends Analysis, Key Manufacturers, Demand, Business Opportunity and Future Share 2022-2032: SPER Market Research
The growing adoption of electric vehicles around the globe, deducting battery prices, and growing investment by leading automotive OEMs to prevent the battery supply chain for their future electric vehicles are some of the primary aspects boosting the growth of this global market. The growing adoption of electric mobility in underdeveloped regions, increasing investments in enhancing lithium-ion battery capacity, and rising deployment of battery-as-a-service provide progressive growth choices for market players. Moreover, with augmented sales of electric vehicles, the e-mobility trend is probably to attain traction over the reviewed duration. The unremitting implementation of integrated charging stations, as well as the construction of green power generation abilities, would add to the market’s growth potential.
According to the SPER market research, ‘Electric Vehicle Battery Market Size- By Propulsion Type, By Battery Type, By Vehicle Type - Regional Outlook, Competitive Strategies and Segment Forecast to 2032’ state that the global EV battery market is anticipated to reach USD 353.60 billion by 2032 with a CAGR of 20.15%.
EV Battery Market Future Scope
The growing awareness concerning the benefits of electric vehicles, the increasing popularity of improved electric vehicles, and the rising production capacities by the topmost automakers are the popular aspects that are propelling the growth of the global EV battery market. The increasing government initiatives to encourage the implementation of EVs by incentivizing the producers and by proposing subsidies to the clients are positively propelling the sales of EVs.
The policies of the government to encourage the establishment of charging stations through public-private partnerships are predicted to foster the growth of the market during the near future. The mounting investments in urbanization and the mounting government investments in infrastructural improvement are estimated to support the growth of the EV battery market during the review period. The growing innovations in the technologies and the deducting battery prices are anticipated to foster the implementation of EVs around the world.
Around urban locations, where daily driving distances are shorter on average, more fuel-efficient and smaller cars are more common. By the coming future, it is projected that a great percentage of the world’s population will reside around urban locations, growing the requirement for electric vehicles. The variety of electric vehicles enlarges as battery technology improves. For individuals who commute a long distance, EVs with prolonged range are more feasible. Great-speed charging will also become a reality owing to charger performance and battery innovations, decreasing downtime while driving. Therefore, the growing requirement for EVs will propel the EV battery market.

2023.06.02 06:46 AtomicRadiation Rabies

Rabies. It's exceptionally common, but people just don't run into the animals that carry it often. Skunks especially, and bats.
Let me paint you a picture.
You go camping, and at midday you decide to take a nap in a nice little hammock. While sleeping, a tiny brown bat, in the "rage" stages of infection is fidgeting in broad daylight, uncomfortable, and thirsty (due to the hydrophobia) and you snort, startling him. He goes into attack mode.
Except you're asleep, and he's a little brown bat, so weighs around 6 grams. You don't even feel him land on your bare knee, and he starts to bite. His teeth are tiny. Hardly enough to even break the skin, but he does manage to give you the equivalent of a tiny scrape that goes completely unnoticed.
Rabies does not travel in your blood. In fact, a blood test won't even tell you if you've got it. (Antibody tests may be done, but are useless if you've ever been vaccinated.)
You wake up, none the wiser. If you notice anything at the bite site at all, you assume you just lightly scraped it on something.
The bomb has been lit, and your nervous system is the wick. The rabies will multiply along your nervous system, doing virtually no damage, and completely undetectable. You literally have NO symptoms.
It may be four days, it may be a year, but the camping trip is most likely long forgotten. Then one day your back starts to ache... Or maybe you get a slight headache?
At this point, you're already dead. There is no cure.
(The sole caveat to this is the Milwaukee Protocol, which leaves most patients dead anyway, and the survivors mentally disabled, and is seldom done - see below).
There's no treatment. It has a 100% kill rate.
Absorb that. Not a single other virus on the planet has a 100% kill rate. Only rabies. And once you're symptomatic, it's over. You're dead.
So what does that look like?
Your headache turns into a fever, and a general feeling of being unwell. You're fidgety. Uncomfortable. And scared. As the virus that has taken its time getting into your brain finds a vast network of nerve endings, it begins to rapidly reproduce, starting at the base of your brain... Where your "pons" is located. This is the part of the brain that controls communication between the rest of the brain and body, as well as sleep cycles.
Next you become anxious. You still think you have only a mild fever, but suddenly you find yourself becoming scared, even horrified, and it doesn't occur to you that you don't know why. This is because the rabies is chewing up your amygdala.
As your cerebellum becomes hot with the virus, you begin to lose muscle coordination, and balance. You think maybe it's a good idea to go to the doctor now, but assuming a doctor is smart enough to even run the tests necessary in the few days you have left on the planet, odds are they'll only be able to tell your loved ones what you died of later.
You're twitchy, shaking, and scared. You have the normal fear of not knowing what's going on, but with the virus really fucking the amygdala this is amplified a hundred fold. It's around this time the hydrophobia starts.
You're horribly thirsty, you just want water. But you can't drink. Every time you do, your throat clamps shut and you vomit. This has become a legitimate, active fear of water. You're thirsty, but looking at a glass of water begins to make you gag, and shy back in fear. The contradiction is hard for your hot brain to see at this point. By now, the doctors will have to put you on IVs to keep you hydrated, but even that's futile. You were dead the second you had a headache.
You begin hearing things, or not hearing at all as your thalamus goes. You taste sounds, you see smells, everything starts feeling like the most horrifying acid trip anyone has ever been on. With your hippocampus long under attack, you're having trouble remembering things, especially family.
You're alone, hallucinating, thirsty, confused, and absolutely, undeniably terrified. Everything scares the literal shit out of you at this point. These strange people in lab coats. These strange people standing around your bed crying, who keep trying to get you "drink something" and crying. And it's only been about a week since that little headache that you've completely forgotten. Time means nothing to you anymore. Funny enough, you now know how the bat felt when he bit you.
Eventually, you slip into the "dumb rabies" phase. Your brain has started the process of shutting down. Too much of it has been turned to liquid virus. Your face droops. You drool. You're all but unaware of what's around you. A sudden noise or light might startle you, but for the most part, it's all you can do to just stare at the ground. You haven't really slept for about 72 hours.
Then you die. Always, you die.
And there's not one... fucking... thing... anyone can do for you.
Then there's the question of what to do with your corpse. I mean, sure, burying it is the right thing to do. But the fucking virus can survive in a corpse for years. You could kill every rabid animal on the planet today, and if two years from now, some moist, preserved, rotten hunk of used-to-be brain gets eaten by an animal, it starts all over.
So yeah, rabies scares the shit out of me. And it's fucking EVERYWHERE. (Source: Spent a lot of time working with rabies. Would still get my vaccinations if I could afford them.)
Each time this gets reposted, there is a TON of misinformation that follows by people who simply don't know, or have heard "information" from others who were ill informed:
Only x number of people have died in the U.S. in the past x years. Rabies is really rare.
Yes, deaths from rabies are rare in the United States, in the neighborhood of 2-3 per year. This does not mean rabies is rare. The reason that mortality is so rare in the U.S. is due to a very aggressive treatment protocol of all bite cases in the United States: If you are bitten, and you cannot identify the animal that bit you, or the animal were to die shortly after biting you, you will get post exposure treatment. That is the protocol.
Post exposure is very effective (almost 100%) if done before you become symptomatic. It involves a series of immunoglobulin shots - many of which are at the site of the bite - as well as the vaccine given over the span of a month. (Fun fact - if you're vaccinated for rabies, you may be able to be an immunoglobulin donor!)
It's not nearly as bad as was rumored when I was a kid. Something about getting shots in the stomach. Nothing like that.
In countries without good treatment protocols rabies is rampant. India alone sees 20,000 deaths from rabies PER YEAR.
The "why did nobody die of rabies in the past if it's so dangerous?" argument.
There were entire epidemics of rabies in the past, so much so that suicide or murder of those suspected to have rabies were common.
In North America, the first case of human death by rabies wasn't reported until 1768. This is because Rabies does not appear to be native to North America, and it spread very slowly. So slowly, in fact, that until the mid 1990's, it was assumed that Canada and Northern New York didn't have rabies at all. This changed when I was personally one of the first to send in a positive rabies specimen - a raccoon - which helped spawn a cooperative U.S. / Canada rabies bait drop some time between 1995 and 1997 (my memory's shot).
Unfortunately, it was too late. Rabies had already crossed into Canada.
There are still however some countries (notably, Australia, where everything ELSE is trying to kill you) that still does not have Rabies.
Lots of people have survived rabies using the Milwaukee Protocol.
False. ONE woman did, and she is still recovering to this day (some 16+ years later). There's also the possibility that she only survived due to either a genetic immunity, or possibly even was inadvertently "vaccinated" some other way. All other treatments ultimately failed, even the others that were reported as successes eventually succumbed to the virus. Almost all of the attributed "survivors" actually received post-exposure treatment before becoming symptomatic and many of THEM died anyway.
Bats don't have rabies all that often. This is just a scare tactic.
False. To date, 6% of bats that have been "captured" or come into contact with humans were rabid.. This number is a lot higher when you consider that it equates to one in seventeen bats. If the bat is allowing you to catch/touch it, the odds that there's a problem are simply too high to ignore.
You have to get the treatment within 72 hours, or it won't work anyway.
False. The rabies virus travels via nervous system, and can take several years to reach the brain depending on the path it takes. If you've been exposed, it's NEVER too late to get the treatment, and just because you didn't die in a week does not mean you're safe. A case of a guy incubating the virus for 8 years.
At least I live in Australia!
No.
Please, please, PLEASE stop posting bad information every time this comes up. Rabies is not something to be shrugged off. And sadly, this kind of misinformation killed a 6 year old just this Sunday. Stop it.

PS: The attached image is a poem written by Zoe Leonard, who was active in AIDS advocacy and queer politics in New York in the 1980s and 1990s. Leonard's 1992 poem which begins with the line: "I want a dyke for president", was written to celebrate Eileen Myles's presidential run.
At the beginning of the 1991–1992 presidential election, Eileen Myles (a North American poet) heard George H. W. Bush speak about the threat to freedom of speech posed by the dialog of activists and minoritized people. With that statement, Myles "realized there was this amazing political power to speech." Myles then conducted an "openly female" write-in campaign for the office of President of the United States from the East Village that spiraled into a project of national interest. Part performance art, part protest, this gesture was meant to offer an alternative glimpse into what progressive, radical, and socially committed politics could look like. Are you an entrepreneur in Florida with a great business idea but struggling to find funding? Look no further! Business funding services in Florida can help you get the capital you need to start or grow your business.
Florida has a diverse and dynamic business climate, with a range of industries including tourism, healthcare, finance, and technology. The state's favorable tax policies, low business costs, and skilled workforce make it an attractive destination for entrepreneurs looking to start or expand their businesses. However, lack of funding remains a major challenge for many entrepreneurs in the Sunshine State.
Business funding services in Florida offer a variety of financing options to help entrepreneurs realize their dreams. Here are some of the most popular funding options:
Small Business Administration (SBA) Loans: The SBA is a federal agency that provides loans to small businesses. SBA loans are backed by the government and have lower interest rates and longer repayment terms than traditional bank loans. There are several types of SBA loans available, including 7(a) loans, microloans, and CDC/504 loans.
Business Lines of Credit: A business line of credit is a revolving loan that allows businesses to borrow funds as needed up to a certain limit. This type of financing is ideal for businesses that have fluctuating cash flow or need to finance short-term expenses.
Equipment Financing: Equipment financing is a type of loan used to purchase or lease equipment for your business. This type of financing is ideal for businesses that require expensive equipment or machinery to operate.
Merchant Cash Advances: A merchant cash advance is a type of financing in which a lender advances money to a business in exchange for a percentage of future credit card sales. This type of financing is ideal for businesses that have a high volume of credit card sales.
Crowdfunding: Crowdfunding is a method of raising funds from a large number of people via the internet. Crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo allow entrepreneurs to pitch their business ideas and receive pledges from backers in exchange for rewards or equity.

What do YOU want Pride to be?
  • Pride is meaningless corporate capitalism (vs) Pride is a reminder of our struggles
  • Pride is a toxic performance (vs) Pride is a political necessity
  • Pride is embarrassing and shallow (vs) Pride is fearless display of love
  • Pride is a first-world problems event (vs) Pride is a tribute to those who fought before us for our rights

The list goes on…

2023.06.02 06:24 MichelleinScottsdale How can I be the best partner as I return to work and my partner becomes a stay at home dad?

My partner (M) and I (F) welcomed a beautiful baby boy at the end of April. We are very fortunate to both be home with him right now on paid parental leave. (You all know how rare this is for the United States. Feeling so grateful!) I get 12 weeks and will be returning to work in the middle of July. (M-F, 8am - 5pm, 30 min commute)
My partner is a professor. Since our son was technically born after the spring semester ended, he was offered the opportunity to take the summer and also the fall semester off for paid parental leave. That means he will not need to return to work until January and will be taking on the role as a stay at home dad for about 5-ish months.
It’s going to be a big adjustment for us as we have developed a solid routine so far that allows us to prioritize both of our own needs and baby’s.
So my question is, how can I make this transition as smooth as possible for all of us?
I’ve also seen so many vent posts not only in this group but others about how working parents are not supporting their stay at home parent partners well. I do not want that to become us!
If you were or are currently a stay at home parent, what what do you wish or appreciate that your working partner did to best support you and baby?
*Not sure if it’s helpful to note, but I am currently exclusively breastfeeding and will be pumping when I return to work. If all goes well, I plan to continue breastfeeding during night feeds!
I appreciate all of the advice and insight—thank you!
