Shipping: $5 for up to 3 LPs anywhere in the US, plus $1 for each additional record (2-LP sets count as 2) via USPS Media Mail. Records are packed snugly in standard record mailers with cardboard stiffeners, with LP removed from jacket to reduce the risk of damage. Please make sure your primary PayPal address is correct at the time of payment, as I cannot ship to alternate addresses.
Grading: I am a conservative grader and so far I have had ZERO complaints about the condition of items I've sold. I evaluate vinyl based on the Goldmine (Discogs) grading system--NM, VG+, VG, G, F, P. Occasionally I will include an additional +/- in order to more accurately describe items, but those are the basic grades (I don't do EX, so VG+ is only one step below NM. Sometimes I'll use VG++ for an item that's really, really close to NM but not quite, while I usually reserve NM for sealed or unplayed items). I try to describe items in as much detail as possible up front so that buyers know what they're getting, especially those VG or below.
ABOUT ME:
I am an experienced record seller with a 2+ years of successful transactions on here (40+ sales) and eBay (250+ positive feedback). But I am (like all of us) a music fan/collector first and foremost. The items I sell are from my personal collection and are mostly things I have acquired multiple versions of over the years or have recently upgraded. I am always looking to let go of records I don't listen to much anymore so that I can make room for new ones. I try to be fair with my grading and pricing and I've only had good feedback so far, but if you have any questions or if issues arise after a sale, don't hesitate to contact me and I guarantee we'll work it out.

2023.06.06 19:55 Issac_E234 Azur Waves, Chapter 28 (part 1)
Previous, first, next, Fanfiction.
(A/N) This one turned out to be a long one so its been split between two posts. Enjoy.
Chapter 28
The sound of the gunshot still rang in my ears. The room felt hot, almost stifling. Questions ran amok in my head, Did he have a family? Had this been the only option? Was I now just as bad as him? The last few seconds played over and over in my head.
All I could do was look at his body. The scientist laid in front of me–unmoving, his dirty shirt darkening around the wound. I just stared at the life I just took, and for a moment, the questions in my mind became overwhelming.
It wasn't until a hand reached out and grabbed me by the shoulder I was pulled back to the present.
“James!” Warspite’s voice called out. I realised her tiny hands were pulling at me. I met her eyes in a daze, the concern on her face telling me she had already tried calling my name several times now.
“Warspite… I-” I tasted bile in my throat.. My eyes unconsciously broke contact with hers, and meandered back to the body.
“Don't! Look at me, James.” She accentuated her point by cupping my cheeks and forcing me to focus on her and only her. “Eyes on me.”
“Y-yes.” I complied awkwardly.
“I’ve radioed her Majesty, they'll be at the mouth of the river soon. Go with the others and get to the docks. Get out of here.”
A semblance of reason finally returned to my mind. “The others? What about you?”
“I’m going to burn this wretched place to the ground.” Seeing that I was finally cognisant she turned me around in place and pushed me over to the others, ensuing the entire time I couldn't see what I had done. Javelin was quick to receive me in a tiny hug.
Everyone bar Cleveland now had their rigging out, who was still slumped on the floor, holding her sister’s cube with Z23 trying to console her. Zuikaku had her sword drawn and was watching every entrance to the room, her entire body tense, ready to act at a moment's notice with a hard expression.
“Javelin, I need one of your depth charges.” The Dreadnought ordered. “I’ll wire up its timer to level this room.”
“R-right.” Javelin closed her eyes and focused. She lifted up her arms and a large barrel shaped munition appeared in her hands. She passed it over to Warspite with ease. “Here.”
“Good.” She looked to Cleveland. Her tone softened slightly. “Are you good to move?”
“Aye.” She spoke with a sniffle as she stood up, still tightly holding the cube against herself not letting it leave her sight for even a second.
Warspite stared me down. “Turn and leave, keep your eyes forward and don't look back. I'll catch up.”
With a shove she pushed me around and towards the door we had entered from. I stood still for a moment, a part of me wanting to turn back one more time, and I probably would have if not for a small hand reaching out to me. I found Javelin staring at me compassionately, her cheeks and pretty emerald eyes still marked with dried up tears. She stood gently still.
Despite the overbearing desire to do so, Warspite’s words echoed in my head. I jolted forward and didn't look back once.
Cleveland whimpered as we left the building before running ahead of us, through the smoke from the fires that filled the air I was just able to see the source of her dread.
The Montpelier was still in its dock, but where we had left it in an almost pristine condition it was now in a complete state of disrepair, the gun barrels hung limp in their housings, with several having even fallen into the deck. The panels lining the hull were coming apart as the welds and rivets that held them failed, the ship looked to be listing slightly as water was probably leaking in through collapsed bulkheads.
“No…” I heard Cleveland dash past me.
Cleveland scrambled over to her sister’s deteriorating ship, followed close by the rest of the girls, ignoring the muffled sound of an explosion that came from the building behind us.
With burning lungs I finally caught up to her as she reached the dock. “Please, Monty. Don’t go.” The cruiser pleaded, keeping the cube firmly grasped in one hand and placing her palm against the hull.
The ship moved as its weight shifted, a loud scraping noise rang out as the metal grinded against the dock.
Cleveland continued to rub the metal affectionately. “Shh, it's ok. Your big sister is here. Everything will be fine now.”
As was the usual case whenever something happened around these girls the hairs on my neck stood up as both the ship and Cleveland both began to glow.
There was a moment of hope as I looked at the cube clutched in her arm, but it still looked inert, even the light radiating from her body seemed to avoid it.
As I had seen countless times now, the ship became a mass of energy, the light hovering where the ship had previously been before Cleveland suddenly went rigid as the light flowed into her.
The cruiser yelped in pain as her body fought to contain the energy, a hand grabbed my collar and pulled me away. I was too transfixed on the spectacle to see who had done so.
Blood dripped from Cleveland's nose and she dropped to her knees, not letting go of Montpelier’s cube at all. Her rigging glowed bright, and an ethereal shape took form around it. The more I stared at it, the more I understood that this shape had the outline of a rigging, and it was fighting to occupy the same space as Cleveland’s already existing one, who grit her teeth and winced.
A gust of wind blasted around her, and in a matter not too dissimilar to when her rigging had formed, the light coalesced once more. A black line was suddenly drawn along the seam of her cape at the same time it was torn around the edges, followed by the ends of her golden locks of hair lost their lustre, changing into a silver white.
After what had felt like an eternity Cleveland seemingly regained control of her body once again, the tension in her arms and legs relaxed. With sweat dripping from her head she reopened her eyes, and slowly stood back up with laboured breaths. Her left eye shone with a different lustre for a moment, still red, yet a slightly different hue that slowly disappeared as she blinked.
“Are you ok?” I asked, unsure of what being ok could even be classed as right now.
“I thi-” She did a double take as what sounded like two voices came from her mouth, her own overlapping with another one. She put a hand to her mouth and coughed. “I think I am?” Her voice came out normal then. She wiped the blood away from her with her elbow, noticing that the fingerless glove on her right arm now ran across the full length of her elbow.
Running footsteps pulled our attention over to Warspite, who sped over to us. Smoke poured out of the roof of the building behind her, further adding to the cloud surrounding the facility and reducing visibility even further. Any further and I’d begin to choke.
Warspite took a second to stare at Cleveland before quickly returning her attention to the matter at hand, I noticed something hidden within her scarf as she adjusted it. “Commander, we need to move. Cleveland, are you able to sail?” The cruiser gave a slight nod. “Good, Zuikaku take him, the rest of you stay close.”
Slender but firm arms wrapped around me, and the carrier in question slung me over her shoulder like a sack of potatoes and jumped off the edge of the dock without warning. Zuikaku didn’t even give me a chance to retort as we splashed against the water, quickly gaining speed. I was able to see the others land on the water one by one and begin to follow behind us, quickly catching up. They all had a solemn expression as we once again found ourselves only just escaping complete disaster.
Zuikaku let me go once her feet touched the Warspite’s deck. The ship was already gaining speed and heading towards the relative safety of the open ocean, leaving behind a smoking land, the morning wind fanning the flames even more. I took out my binoculars and dared look back. I knew there would only be burnt rubble left by the time the fires died.
I felt the rush of what had happened slowly die down. A burning at the back of my throat threaded to force me to empty my stomach. The air was hot, almost stifling, it had never stopped burning even after leaving that place. Everyone's eyes were now on me, with the three girls that had stayed back looking with confusion on their faces.
“Get-” I paused, forcing my voice to stay steady and my dinner to stay down. “Get us out to the open sea and stay alert for any ships, Siren or otherwise. Everyone go and get some rest, it's been a long night.”
I did not wait for a reply and made my way inside the ship with unsteady steps, pushing my hands deep into my pockets to try and stop them from shaking. Someone called out to me as I walked but I just ignored it.
It was only when I went to open my cabin door did I realise someone had followed me, a white gloved hand covered mine as I tried to turn the handle.
“Not now, Hood.” I sighed, almost whispering. I turned my head to look at the woman, finding her beautiful blue eyes looking back at me with concern.
“James, I-”
“Please don’t.” I cut her off, wincing at the harshness of my own voice. I felt my stomach churn more, but I just didn't want to deal with anyone right now.
“But-”
“Don’t make me order you.”
The words left my mouth before I even realised. Hood stood still for a moment, mouth agasp and eyes wide with incredulity. She retired her hand away from mine, placing it against her chest. A mixture of emotions ran on her face, ones I didn’t dare look at.
I opened the door and darted inside the cabin before she recovered, slamming it shut behind me.
I stood deathly still for a moment. Was it a minute? Was it an hour? I just stood against the door, my legs feeling numb. Eventually, I heard the distinctive click of Hood’s heels disappear into the distance.
I held for a moment longer. For just a moment longer, I stood alone, bearing the weight. Then it came crashing down.
I ran my hands through my hair and tried to calm myself down. It was hopeless. Blood was on my hands, I could still smell the gunpowder, it was an oppressing scent that overpowered everything else. I found myself staring at my hand, how long had it been locked in that gripping position? I could still feel the weight of the gun.
I felt nauseous.
My arm still ached from the recoil, unable to hold the gun properly without being noticed. I had felt pain shoot up my arm the moment I fired and now even closing my fist was a difficult affair.
Unable to stand still any longer, I began to pace back and forth in the small cabin. Forward and backwards, side to side, the walls closed in on me every time I turned, making it harder and harder to breathe.
“It’s just a trick, it’s all in your head.” I repeated to myself, but the words rang hollow.
The sequence replayed over and over in my head, each time more vivid than the last. The details ran too clearly. Steven’s voice, the whimpers of the girls, my own heart pounding, my own ears ringing.
Cold metal against my skull. My spine freezing.
I sat down on the bed, and cradled my head in my arms. I closed my eyes trying my hardest to force the image out of my head. It was a useless effort.
Without even meaning, I whimpered silently. The sound of something dripping onto the deck pulled my attention away from the memory. Something ran down my face and I realised I had started crying. I tried to wipe my eyes with my sleeve, hoping nobody would come in at this moment. What kind of leader would cry at a time like this? All those girls looked to me for guidance and leadership, yet time after time again I led us straight into disaster
It had been me that had almost cost the girls their freedom. I didn't deserve to be their Commander.
I breathed deeply and tried to get a lid on my emotions and push them down.
“Think practical James. You're just in shock.” I told myself before taking several more deep breaths, remembering the first aid books Hood and I had read together. Thinking of Hood again made me feel miserable.
I reached into my pocket. Even sitting down it still felt like an iron weight pulling me down. I feebly grasped the old wooden handle and pulled the gun back out from where I had quickly stashed it. The scent of burnt gunpowder seemed to double as it entered the open air.
My stomach twisted again, and I let go of it, followed by a rushed scampering. I reached under my bed, not really caring where, just looking for something suitable to get that thing away from me and my mind. I found an old bag and frantically tossed the gun inside, producing a distinctive clicking sound.
“Shit.” I cursed and reached inside with my hand, finding an old bottle of scotch. The opaque, unlabelled glass was thankfully intact, but it showed me my warped, miserable reflection. I don’t know what possessed me then, for I grasped it by the neck and pushed the bag with the gun back under the bed.
I pried it open. It had been a gift from one of the sailors in the fleet. Twisting the wax securing the cap I realised such a bottle was nigh impossible to get on a sailors wage so I guessed this one had probably been listed as smashed during the attack.
I sat further back in my bed and lifted the bottle up to my mouth. The old familiar taste burned my throat as the amber liquid went down but the pleasant warming effect was soon to follow.
Taking another large swig I noticed a third of the bottle had already been drunk. I laid the bottle down and burrowed my head down on the pillow, desperately waiting for the numbing effect of the alcohol to kick in.
I looked once again at the door to my cabin. Part of me wanted nothing more than for one of the girls to open the door and come in, even if it was just to sit in silence with me. Even if it was Hood. God, why did I snap at her like that?
Sighing, my gaze turned to look up at the ceiling as my mind began to wander. I thought of the short time Javelin and I had spent together when we first met. It felt like a lifetime ago when she was showing me around her ship, trying her hardest to impress me with every rivet and weld used in her construction.
And thanks to me she just experienced nightmare after nightmare. Warspite had been right. I just keep throwing myself into situations without thinking about the consequences.
Maybe it would be best for me to just return home. The girls would be far better off leading themselves, I would probably be arrested the moment I returned, but it would be for the best.
I lifted the bottle again.
–
I spent a long while laying on my bed thinking of both home and the small moments of comfort I had shared with the girls, riding out the buzz of the alcohol until it eventually faded. Leaving my mouth dry and the warning signs of an oncoming headache. I didn’t dare drink myself to a stupor, but I drifted listlessly in my thoughts for an unknown amount of time. The ship had stopped moving a while back, and now the light coming through the porthole had darkened. There was a constant soft tapping sound against the hull from a rainstorm.
Both thirst and growing hunger forced me to get up. I left my cabin with a sigh, and was surprised to find a tray with some sandwiches by the door. I never heard anyone knock so I didn't know how long it had been left out for or who left them. Eating them helped sate my hunger and slightly quell the pain in my stomach but also added to the growing guilt of how the girls were willing to go out of their way for me.
I placed the empty tray into my cabin to take to the mess later. I began walking towards the bridge, knowing the ship's owner would be there. I knew if there was anyone on this ship who could set me straight, it was her.
I found the Dreadnought sitting in the captain's chair, her long blond hair and scarf flowing down each side of the chair and her short legs idly dangling in the air. The bridge echoed with the sound of the rain and I could see the droplets flowing down the glass. The cabin was slightly dark, with just the night lights on.
Warspite rested her head in her palms and looked out of the cabin, seemingly unaware of my presence. Not wanting to overly startle someone who controlled naval cannons, I announced my presence as I walked to her side.
“Hey, Warspite. Anything to report?”
She immediately jolted in her seat with a rather cute yelp. She twisted her head towards the source of the noise. “Oh, James. Sorry, I didn't hear you enter.” She placed a hand against her chest to calm her racing heart.
“Aren’t you always able to tell where everyone is on your ship?” I asked, trying to make conversation. Just being in her presence was bringing some welcome relief, I didn't know why but it was like I could always be at ease around her.
“That still holds true, but my mind was elsewhere.” Her eyes shifted nervously and she pulled her scarf up slightly.
Her face turned to a look of concern. I knew what she was going to say before she even spoke. “How are you feeling?.”
“I’m fine.” I quickly replied, suddenly unable to meet her gaze.
“Poppycock. I can smell the alcohol James.”
I cursed the girl's heightened senses. I had come to the bridge to find someone to talk to, but now confronted with it I wanted to be anywhere but here.
“I just… We wouldn’t have gotten into that situation if it wasn’t for me. It’s always like this. It’s always on me. You keep risking yourselves and it’s my fault.”
“It’s not like that, James. We are yours to command. Danger will happen one way or the other.”
I trembled with a myriad of feelings, but the one that overtook me the most was frustration. “You have better chances to survive without me leading you into stupid danger.”
I could see her eyes widening, but I continued before she had the chance to react. “You are irreplaceable, all of you. If that happens again, I want all of you to get to safety even if it means leaving me behind. You deserve better than some guy who’s always winging it.”
Warspite sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose. She hopped down from the chair and stepped forward until she was right in front of me. She placed her hands behind her back and tilted her head up. “Could you lean forward for me please? My head height will do.” She asked politely.
Confused, I leaned forward until our eyes met at the same level. The pupils of her eyes seemed to widen as she studied every aspect of my face. After a few seconds had passed I began to wonder what she was doing.
In a flash her face twisted to anger and she slapped me across the face with enough force to make me stumble. My hand immediately went to where she had hit feeling a burning sting, there was a slight taste of blood in my mouth. Then I felt her weight on my chest.
“Don’t!” I could feel her trembling on my chest. “Don't you dare ever say something like that again!” She balled her hands into fists and hit my chest repeatedly while stomping her foot into the deck, a sight all too familiar from her sister.
I stood idly and dumbfounded as she vented her frustrations. Warspite then wrapped her arms around me and pulled us into a tight hug, burying her face into my chest. The sudden hug only added to my surprise. Barring the occasional time’s she had offered her hand in comfort and how she had scoffed whenever the other girls had hugged me I had figured she wasn't one for personal contact. And yet, I hugged her back, trying to comfort her, or was she the one comforting me? It was hard to tell.
We both stood in silence for what felt like an eternity. Warspite didn't say anything during the entire time, only keeping a tight grip around my waist while keeping her head against my chest. There wasn't any sobbing or crying, but I could feel a slight dampness on my shirt from her tears.
Once she had decided that enough time had passed Warspite finally let go and stood back, wiping at her eyes in an attempt to hide the fact she’d been crying. “You…” Her voice was shaky, obviously trying with all her might to keep her emotions at bay. “You are not to say such things again. I swore an oath to protect you with my life and by my boilers I will uphold that oath until my last breath, dammit! No matter how difficult you make it for me! You are also irreplaceable, James. Never, ever forget that!” There was a slightest bit of a smile with her last comment.
Sighing I leaned against a console and rubbed my head. “I’m sorry. I can see how much your oaths mean to you. It's just it would be all my fault if something happened to you girls.”
“Don’t apologise, your reasoning is a noble one.” Warspite shook her head and pulled my face back to face hers again. “You, my sisters and Her Majesty are my dearest people in my life, and I couldn't live with myself if something was to happen to any of you, I would rather be the one laid low if it would ensure you had each other.”
A confident smile returned to her face. “But you needn't worry. I will always find the strength to get us out of any situation we find ourselves in.”
“I wish I had even an iota of your confidence.” I replied, my spirits lifting once again just by being in her presence.
“Comes with having eight fifteen inch guns to back me up.” The battleship boasted proudly, her smile turning tender afterwards. “But you shouldn't sell yourself short. Despite the outcomes of your actions, it's obvious to anyone your heart is in the right place and that the decisions you make are right and just.”
She gave a long sigh, her eyes flickering to a side, her lips pursing into a thin line. I followed her gaze to a small object on her chair. I could barely make out what it was.
“What is it?” I asked.
“Something I've been meaning to talk to you about, but I was going to give it a little more time before bringing it up.” Warspite replied as she walked over to fetch it. She presented a small notebook to me. “When I was setting the fuse in the depth charge I couldn't help but look over his body, if only to spit at it. However I spotted this jutting out of his pocket.”
I examined the item further. The black leather bindings showed it was rather valuable, but the paper inside looked yellowed and worn with several loose papers clasped inside. And finally there was the slightest hint of blood on the bottom edge, hastily dried to ensure the contents were not damaged.
“What's… What’s written inside?” I asked. A pregnant silence followed. “...Do I even want to know?”
“That's the thing. I haven't looked yet.” She moved the weight of the notebook around in her hands, half treating it with care like it was a priceless artefact and half looking like she wanted to throw it to the ground. “I can hazard a guess as to what it will entail, and that's what got me perplexed.”
I started to put the pieces together. “If it was in his lab coat then…”
“It's probably his notes on the experiments he ran.” The battleship finished. “In conflict, knowledge–both of yourself and your foe, is power. This book may contain valuable information regarding my kind and what we are capable of.” She looked down at the book and rubbed the leather with her thumb. “But.”
“The way that information was obtained was nothing short of a crime against humanity.”
“Rather more against ship kind if we’re being accurate.” She half joked with a tense smile. “I wanted to ask what you think I should do with this. Her Majesty told me to trust my judgement when I asked her, but I also value your opinion on this.”
Scratching my chin, I looked at the book. Within it may be invaluable information that may help us begin to piece together some of the mysteries of this world. But then I thought of Cleveland and what had happened to her sister. “I’m sorry Warspite, but ultimately this is about your kind. I’d rather have it be one of your kind who ultimately makes that decision.”
“I had a feeling you’d say something along those lines.” She said with a sincere smile, putting the notebook to the side. “I’ll give it some thought. Probably for the best as I’m sure the contents will only worsen my already low opinion of humans. That and I want to get Cleveland’s permission as well, but I’ll give her some time to recover first.”
“Cleveland...” I thought out loud. “How’s she been?”
“Reclusive.” Warspite sighed. “Once we were back on the ship we asked if she needed anything. She just shook her head and began aimlessly wandering my ship, from what I can tell she hasn’t eaten much or spoken to anyone since.”
“Where is she now?”
“Out on deck.” Warspite nodded her head towards the window. “Near the railing by the port side of B turret, she’s been out there since the rain started.”
“Oh?” I tried to look out the window to catch a glimpse of the cruiser, but the turret was blocking the view. I kicked myself for being so distracted when we got back to the ship. “I’ll go make sure she’s ok. Keep us out in the open ocean for now, we’ll figure out our next move soon. I’m sure Z23 can give us a good idea of what our supplies are like.”
“Roger, I’ll keep a lookout for anything.”
Just as I turned to leave I felt her hand grab mine. I looked back to see what it was she wanted. After rocking on her feet a few times she finally spoke “Uh… about what happened this morning, if you wish to talk about any of it. I'm always willing to lend an ear.” There was the slightest hint of a blush on her cheeks
“Thanks… it's been a shock to the system, I'll be sure to remember your offer if I need it.” I made way towards the door. I stopped at the frame. “Warspite?”
“Hm?”
“Thank you. I know I say it a lot, but I truly mean it. Thank you for everything.” I said with gratitude. I left the bridge and walked out into the rain with a smile.

2023.06.06 01:52 ThrowAway7s2 "Family football fare ends with no show of remorse" from the November 2, 1976 Door County Advocate
| Family football fare ends with no show of remorse JIM ROBERTSON Family football fare ends with no show of remorse Our family reached the end of an era last Friday night when the third of three sons played his last high school football game. Nine years of high school football were over. My wife and I weren't a bit sad. In fact, we were glad it was over. I supposed if we had been the Novaks in Kewaunee we would have felt differently. They also had three sons, all of them on winning football teams. Southern Door has been just the opposite of Kewaunee, a comparatively small, rural-oriented school in one of the toughest conferences in the state. A small fish in a big pond. Although it was competitive in the Packerland's first round robin season in 1971, four lean years followed. If you consider wins and losses this year was also lean. But Southern Door was competitive and had regained respectability this year, at least until Friday night. You'll say that's why we were glad it was over, the bad last game that summed up Southern Door's troubles in the Packerland. Not really. Nine years, nine games to a year, is a long grind. It would be fun to know how much gas alone cost. No, if sports were based only on victory and defeat, you wouldn't find many teams to play. Schools would drop sports and only the strong would be left. And who makes winners anyway? The losers. Football, especially, is dominated by the big and the strong. Call it a bully sport If you will. Consider all the uneven games even in college and pro ball where players are supposedly matched in size and strength. Then consider the big, bruising high school players who go against much smaller kids. In maturity alone it's often men against boys. Unfortunately even basketball is getting that way. Big musclemen under the boards are taking the finesse out of the game. So not only beating but pulverizing an opponent is common. Algoma Coach Steve Mayheu said in his post-game radio interview Friday night that he wanted his seniors to wind up their careers with a "pleasurable experience." But what about the unpleasurable experience of the losers? Too often high school games are becoming more and more a reflection of the pros. Fear of losing, fighting and "pouring it on" are on the increase again in line with the winning is the only thing philosophy. And not just in boys' sports but in girls' as well. It was only a few years ago when girls' sports were just starting to flower that Southern Door Administrator Lloyd Jilot predicted to his school board that "it won't be more than a few years when girls will be worse than the boys." We're already hearing reports of losing girls tearing up locker rooms. Maybe we can get sports back to the proper perspective but I don't know. It's a little hard when we hear an august body like the WIAA editorializing that "we should resolve that we will emphasize LESS our effort to make winners, which we do by concentrating on only some of our students, and emphasize MORE our effort to make sports a reality for most of our students" and then emphasize winning even more by instituting the tie-breaker in football, something the colleges don't even have. But maybe it was ever thus. I became a fan of Sturgeon Bay high school sports as a grade schooler back in the late 30's. I guess it was just as much dog-eat-dog back then as we all grew up hating the big schools like Two Rivers and our rivals down the pike at Algoma. Maybe that's why I'm glad the personal involvement is over. Enjoyment of a game as a two-hour interlude of entertainment is one thing, emotional and temperamental involvement another. We're too much like little kids in our games - angry when we lose and not all that happy when we win. Jon Gast said he waited and waited to see a smile break out on the face of Jim Adams when his Sevastopol team was beating Manitowoc Lutheran for a share of the Bay-Lakes championship. The smile never came until the game was over. So is the enjoyment only in the triumph and not in the game itself? Could it be that sport isn't really the character molder we like to think it is but rather a reflection of an affluent society that not only grabs all it can when it can but often at the expense of the have-nots? And really, for what? I once compared a victory to an expensive steak dinner. No sooner is it eaten than you start thinking about the next meal. Even a bad game is no worse than the stomach flu which passes in the night and by Monday is forgotten. Good and bad seasons alike have already given way to basketball and wrestling. I'm reminded of what Southern Door Principal Tom Van Lieshout said after Southern Door's opening loss to Sturgeon Bay this year. A person should always keep his mouth shut after a game because it's easy to say something you don't really mean. I said that maybe Southern Door should just drop football. Tom said no way, that he had just been talking to Butch Arneman, an old college teammate, and they had been reminiscing over the fun they had — even if they had played on a lousy team. I'm also reminded of a longer time ago then Tom Walker was Sturgeon Bay principal and he said how too many people see green and gold instead of red and white out on Memorial Field. Too many people associate high school football with the pros, while Chuck Lane, public relations director of the Packers, waned up in an interview when he said, "It is all a reflection of the world. People are more cynical. We have billed this (pro football) as a holy war for so long...we may be getting some of it back." Still, maybe I should think back to what our oldest son said when Van Lieshout was talking about his college days. He aid, "we didn't have much of a team, either but I still think of it as a good time in my life." Maybe that's the answer. Let the kids play their games and the rest of us act like adults. Which is easy to say now that I'm no longer a football parent. https://archive.co.door.wi.us/jsp/RcWebImageViewer.jsp?doc_id=1e8fc801-90a4-4104-8e86-19a1ea0947dc/wsbd0000/20170120/00000669&pg_seq=5 Courtesy of the Door County Library Newspaper Archive Previously posted: Two articles by Jim Robertson, discussing girls' baseball "Quotes his peers on Little League" from the April 9, 1974 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/13jk75i/quotes_his_peers_on_little_league_from_the_april/ "Problems start with tryouts" from the April 11, 1974 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/13kiv8q/problems_start_with_tryouts_from_the_april_11/ A series on girls' sports by Linda Adams Part I of the series by Linda Adams was previously posted as "Girls sports have come a long way, not far enough" from the December 27, 1973 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/133xv7s/girls_sports_have_come_a_long_way_not_far_enough/ Part II was previously posted as "Inequities still show in girls sports programs" from the January 3, 1974 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/135abbt/inequities_still_show_in_girls_sports_programs/ Part III was previously posted as "Community acceptance still not part of girls' sports" from the January 10, 1974 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/1369toz/community_acceptance_still_not_part_of_girls/ Part IV was previously posted as "Athletic directors take wide look at girls sports" from the January 17, 1974 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/137a5bk/athletic_directors_take_wide_look_at_girls_sports/ Part V was previously posted as "If past growth continues, girls sports will flourish" from the January 24, 1974 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/1385nqif_past_growth_continues_girls_sports_will/ (a response to the five-part series) "Girls sports pose problem" from the February 12, 1974 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/1395aem/girls_sports_pose_problem_from_the_february_12/ Other articles and posts "Washington Island's Kay Curtis becoming a legend in her time" on June 14, 1977 in the Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/131c1w8/washin A grandmotherly perspective on eugenics from the June 2, 1915 Door County News https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/13b3zya/a_grandmotherly_perspective_on_eugenics_from_the/ "Comments from council" editorial, a rebuke from alleged woman's sports militant Rev. 2023.06.04 00:39 Geekboxing Fighting games and me: An essay-length call for help
TL;DR How do I get better when all the practice and advice in the world hasn't lifted me beyond my frankly shallow skill ceiling in three decades? Is something just wrong with my brain?
So, with Street Fighter 6 out, I am putting this all out on the table in the hope that I get some useful, actionable advice. And, caveat, I say this as someone who has always been an advocate of simpler execution in fighting games because I feel like it's a big barrier for a lot of people. I know deep down that it's not JUST this, it's mostly ME. So, if you've ever been cross at me on this sub for any of my complaining on that front, please try to put that aside and help me out.
I'm what I guess you would consider an "old guy" around here. I've been playing fighting games since 1992, I started with Street Fighter II': Champion Edition in the arcade. I was a '90s arcade rat at Sunnyvale Golfland, I've been bodied by lots of names that longtime fighting game fans would recognize. I was probably there that weekend in 1996 to watch the very first Battle by the Bay, which was the precursor to Evo. I've tried my hand at pretty much every major 2D fighting game ever made. In short: I've been quietly existing in the background of the FGC for like, the majority of my life.
And I've just never been able to get past this very low skill ceiling of mine. I can read about systems, and understand them on paper -- how the various meter options work, how to parse frame data and identify safe moves, etc. I can probably recite most of Ryu and Guile's normals to you off the top of my head. But when it comes to moment-to-moment execution and actually acting with intent, capitalizing on mistakes, etc., I just cannot do it in the moment. I get overwhelmed by everything that is going on, my brain essentially bluescreens, and I feel like I am stuck just trying to get my opponent off of me. There's no time to think, no time for my brain to recover.
I have always been this way, ALWAYS, no matter how much time or effort I put in. No matter how much I hit training mode. No matter how much I study Gief's Gym and stuff like that. No matter how much pro play I watch. My brain cannot keep up with the pace of a tense back-and-forth. I cannot recognize hit confirms fast enough for me to start linking into more moves or combos. Heck, just reliably doing any combo more complex than a basic three-hit cancel-into-fireball is something I have always struggled with, no matter how much I practice.
Since Street Fighter 6 is the current focus, let's talk about that game as the relevant touchstone for this thread. In Street Fighter, historically, Guile has been my main. This is mostly down to the fact that he is a charge character, a zoner -- someone who ostensibly rewards my default, instinctive behavior of blocking and trying to keep the opponent out. That tends to always turn into "inevitably getting cornered and pummeled to death." Guile is my choice not necessarily for any great profound reason, but rather because charge moves are easier to execute, and Guile has a basic projectile-and-anti-air gameplan with his specials. I am fond of Ryu for the same reason, but he is less of a specialist in this regard, and I cannot always use him as reliably.
A good match, with Guile, is one where I am able to entirely keep people away with sonic booms and flash kicks. Once they get in, we have a problem and I am never fast enough to get them off or "take my turn," as the lingo goes. It has always been this way for me in fighting games, which in reductive terms boils down to "find the most annoying character who can projectile spam and punish jump-ins." Kano in Mortal Kombat, Dr. Fate in Injustice, Guile in Street Fighter. It's gimmicky and it's all I can do semi-reliably. I have friends who derisively used to call this "the knife test" (after Kano).
I've also, at points, been like: Maybe I've trapped myself in this box, and I should try focusing on a rushdown character. I really tried to make it using Cammy in Street Fighter V, and Giovanna in Guilty Gear Strive, but I feel like that's even worse because I cannot keep my brain from devolving into button-mashing when I am trying to get up on the opponent (and even with a rushdown character, it inevitably leads to another situation where I am on the defensive, blocking in a corner). I am not acting with intent, and I have never figured out how to make myself act with intent, after 30+ years of this.
I've seen all the "just practice" and "just lose a lot" type advice. I've done all that for decades, and it hasn't helped at all.
So, I put it to you, maybe for the final time before I conclude "I've spent my life lying to myself, and this is not for me." How do I fix this? Is my brain just broken somehow, just not meant for fighting games? How do I turn these 30 years into a reality where I can apply anything I've learned? I'm not expecting to wake up like Neo and suddenly be able to freeze bullets. I just want to feel like I'm getting better at these games in a quantifiable way, and being able to execute on the things I know.
This is, for real, one of the great longings in my life that I have never been able to quite reach. I would say it's my white whale, but spoiler, Ahab dies at the end. I want to actually get there, but it seems beyond my capacity. Please help me figure it out, if you can.
(If you took the time to read this, thanks. I appreciate you!)

2023.06.03 23:32 sjanevardsson Damned Bureaucracy
The small cargo ship, in the default medium grey, was wholly unremarkable. The same and similar made up the fleets of corporate and private couriers, with the result that it was not surprising to see it anywhere.
The anonymity and ability to blend in served Sidra well…usually. This station, run by the hyper-bureaucratic aslodzhins was the exception. The “bugs,” as many humans called them, had their own ways of doing things and didn’t like a “squishy,” as they called humans and other endoskeletal beings in their own language, upsetting the order.
“Private vessel Hobby Horse, please state the purpose of your visit and expected duration.”
“Station 47 control, I say again: PV Hobby Horse requesting permission to dock in an out-of-the-way small cargo dock for fueling. Expected visit duration no more than a week…seven standard days, but no less than an hour.”
“PV Hobby Horse, docking for fuel cleared at Lock 7-16. All passengers and crew are required to wait inside the vehicle until security arrives to clear you. …
Cracked-shell squishy thinks they can—” The controller’s voice cut out as they must have noticed they were still transmitting.
“Thank you, station 47 control. Docking at Lock 7-16. Squishy out….”
Sidra expected one or two security to show up to clear her to enter the station, instead, there were a dozen. She opened the airlock and waited inside. “Come on in.”
The leader, obvious by the shiny, silver emblem in the center of its blast armor, stepped in, followed by two others that made a quick inspection of the ship to verify the claim of no other persons aboard. The brown color of the leader’s head carapace marked them as a drone, while the black carapaces were male and bright blue were female.
Sidra extended a hand. “Sidra Boston; captain, owner, pilot, and sole crew of the Hobby Horse. Welcome to my home.”
“Sub-adjutant-lieutenant-detachment-commander Slivdzak.” The officer looked at her extended hand and grasped it with one their six manipulators.
“Pleasure to meet you, Slivdzak. How can I help?” Sidra felt a secret rush of joy at the way the officer tried and failed to hide their discomfort. She knew that the lack of carapace was as disconcerting to them as the feel of a surprise tarantula crawling on the neck was to humans.
“Captain Sidra Boston—”
“Please, just call me Sid. Drop all the Captain and Boston stuff.”
“Sid, you have not made clear the purpose of your ‘one-hour to seven-day’ stay. Please elaborate.”
“I’m meeting someone here and taking them home.”
The officer looked at a small device it carried. A hologram rose from it, her close-cropped black hair, medium-brown skin, large, green eyes, and humped nose obvious. Beneath the hologram was writing in the bugs’ script. “Are you not a hunter of bounties?”
“Well, if that’s what you want to call it, I guess.”
“Such activity is only allowed in teams of three or more by aslodzhin law 9314-27.664 and safety regulations 647-88.932 and 90991-17.0. In addition, at least one of the team must be aslodzhin.”
“That’s kind of speciesist, isn’t it?”
“The courts have allowed for permanent residents of aslodzhin space to fill the requirements where applicable, in accordance with Galactic Union Resolution on the Rights of Sapients, 74.23.08 Paragraph 12.”
“Great, good to hear. Problem is, I work alone and I’m not after a bug.” She shrugged. “You know how we squishies are.”
“Station command has already decreed that you are not to leave your vessel without the two members chosen for you.” The officer raised to its full height, its head carapace close to scraping the ceiling. “Your team will be here soon. Good day, Captain Sidra Boston.”
“Good day, sub-whatever-whatchamacallit Sliv.”
After the security detail left, she stepped out of the ship to check on the refueling. No sooner had her foot set down outside the airlock than she found herself in the crosshairs of two armed security guards that had been standing out of sight.
“They aren’t kidding about not leaving without a team, huh? Damned bureaucracy.” She stepped back inside the ship and sat on the floor to await her babysitters.
When her team arrived, she was surprised by the presence of the furred, six-limbed hikarin hemi-male. He was easily head and shoulders taller than her, but slight of build, and thin-boned, coming from a lower-gravity world.
The aslodzhin female didn’t surprise her, even in her law enforcement uniform. She wore a red symbol on the chest of her uniform.
Sidra stood. “Okay guys, I’m Sid, and this is
my job. You do what I say and stay out of the way we’ll get along fine. You,” she said, pointing at the aslodzhin female, “change out of that uniform. You’ll scare off my skip.”
“Sid, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m senior-squad-chief Dliz, and this is Soolyasin.” Dliz extended a manipulator for a shake and Sidra obliged. Dliz’s compound eyes rotated in a way Sidra didn’t know they could, and she showed frank wonder at the feel of a hand in her manipulator. “Could you do that again?” she asked.
“Do what?”
“You moved your hand, and I could feel the muscles flex…yes! That’s it!” Dliz laughed. “That’s the neatest feeling ever!”
“Am I the first squishy you’ve met?”
“Oh, no. I’ve known Sool since I was a nymph.” Dliz continued to hold on to Sidra’s hand.
“How about humans?” Sidra raised an eyebrow and tried to extricate herself from the increasingly awkward handshake.
“Yes. I mean, I’ve seen plenty passing through, but never met one.” Dliz let go and uttered a quiet apology.
Soolyasin stepped forward. He was dressed in technician’s clothes, complete with tool belt. “You’ll have to forgive Dliz. She’s a fan of bounty hunters in general, and you in particular.”
“Shush.” Dliz stood straight up at attention on her four hind legs, her head scraping the ceiling, her three left manipulators raised in a salute. “What are your orders, Sid?”
“First order of business, you need to lose the uniform and dress in something less conspicuous. Sool, is that a disguise?”
“No, these are my work clothes. When Dliz called I ran straight here.”
“That’s fine. You’ll blend in, no trouble.” Sidra put on a ballistic vest and covered it with a loose jacket. She checked that she had cuffs, shackles, bench warrant, and badge.
She turned toward Dliz. “Do you have a ballistic vest?”
“I have a carapace; I’m not a squishy.”
“Will your carapace stop a slug from a weapon like this?” Sidra held up a high-powered, 6mm rifle.
“Um, no. I have armor, though.”
“Can you wear it under clothes?”
“Yes, but it’s against the regulations.”
“Screw the rules, wear your armor…
under your clothes.” She muttered under her breath, “Damned bureaucracy.”
Sidra turned toward Soolyasin. “I think I have a vest that’ll fit you.”
He looked at Sidra, then Dliz, then back again. “Is it going to be that dangerous?”
Sidra showed them the bench warrant. Soolyasin’s eyes grew wide and Dliz’s eyes rolled in a different way to earlier. Sidra thought she might be able to read bug emotions if this kept up.
“You were going after a turgen terrorist by yourself?” he asked.
“Still am. Just don’t want to see my babysitters get hurt.” She turned to look at Dliz. “Dliz, relax. You don’t have to stand at attention. I need you to tell me which of these weapons you’ll let me carry on the station.”
Dliz settled back down onto six legs and looked over the cabinet Sidra had unlocked. In addition to the rifle, she had pistols, tasers, batons, knives, and a shotgun with less-lethal beanbag loads along with standard loads.
“Which of them are capable of breaching the station hull?”
“The 6-mil, and the shotgun, if I loaded it with steel shot or slugs instead of beanbags.” She didn’t mention that the 10mm pistols were just as likely to do the same damage, but she wasn’t going out without at least one lethal weapon.
“In that case, leave the rifle and lethal shotgun rounds behind. I’ll be carrying a beam weapon, too, so we should be covered.”
“What about me?” Soolyasin asked.
“The only thing I need you to do is stay out of the way. Unless I need some inconspicuous eyes in the bay.”
After fitting Soolyasin with a ballistic vest and Dliz getting into civilian clothes over her armor, much to her dismay, they moved to the main cargo bays where they expected their quarry to show. Sidra positioned them so that she could watch arrivals, Dliz could watch her back, and Soolyasin could stay well out of the way unless and until needed.
The first hour went by at glacial speed, with constant interruptions from Dliz and Soolyasin asking questions or pointing at every passerby that
might be a turgen in disguise. The next two hours dragged compared to the first.
It was in the middle of the fourth hour that Sidra got notice that the ship carrying her quarry was docking. She moved them to cover the lock where it pulled in, granting them a view on both the personnel airlock and the cargo airlock.
A much smaller contingent of security met the ship, cleared the crew for the station, and left. Four crewmembers, all turgen, filed off. Larger than humans in bulk, grey skin covered with hard dermal denticles, they had two arms, two legs, the remnants of a dorsal fin, and a long, flat tail with which they could do bone-breaking damage.
Sidra waited. If he was going to sneak off the ship, he’d need to do it soon. When it became apparent that he wasn’t going to get out on his own, she radioed Soolyasin.
“Okay, Sool. It’s clear around the ship. Just carry your tool case and walk onboard like you belong there. You’ve seen his picture, if you see him, run. If there’s
anyone else on the ship, just tell them you’re checking the fuel gauges because of some regulation or other.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure. You got this, and I’ve got your back.”
Soolyasin walked onto the ship, and they could hear him in their headsets, “Hello? Anyone here? I need to check your fuel gauges. Hello?”
A few quiet moments passed before Soolyasin spoke up again. “There’s no one else here,” he said, “I’m co—” His voice was cut off by the sound of a heavy thud.
Sidra ran for the ship, pulling her shotgun into firing position and cycling a round into the chamber. She stopped at the door of the ship and called inside. “Give it up, Otto. The only way you’re leaving here is in cuffs.”
When she didn’t hear anything else, she moved to clear the corners. She looked right where the door to the cockpit was closed. She swiveled around to check the other side only to find it empty as well. “Dliz, move up and cover the exit. The cargo airlock hasn’t been cycled, so this is the only way off.”
She began to move down the passageway when she heard the cockpit door click behind her. She swung around a delivered a 12-gauge beanbag into Otto’s gut at near point-blank range. Rather than stopping him, it enraged him. He turned and swiped at her with his tail.
Sidra tried to dodge out the way, but he managed to knock the shotgun out of her hands. He picked it up and threw it behind himself into the cockpit, next to the limp form of Soolyasin. “Time to go away, bounty hunter.”
He began to move toward her. When he stepped in front of the open door, he was met with a concentrated beam of infrared energy that forced him to jump back. “Listen, soft-skin. You leave now, and I’ll throw your friend out. It’s your one chance to leave alive.”
She drew her 10mm pistol and pointed it at him. “And if I don’t?”
He started toward her again, then stopped when the beam almost connected. “I’ll start by killing your furry friend, then your trigger-happy friend, then you…but nice and slow. There’s no way you’re taking me to a human prison.”
Sidra couldn’t see Dliz, but from the angle of the last beam, she’d moved to where she had more coverage of the passageway toward the cockpit. She knew that if he wanted, he could ignore the burns and rush her, crushing her carapace in a thousand different ways. Her shotgun was far out of reach, not to mention ineffective, but the 10mm pistol was a comforting weight in her hand.
Otto turned his back on her, his tail swishing wildly, smashing against the bulkheads on each side of the passage. “Very well, then. On to killing your furry friend first.”
“I’m warning you, Otto, these are lethal rounds. Put your hands behind your head, your tail between your legs, and drop to your knees.”
By the time Otto had taken a step, Sidra had taken aim and fired a shot into his torso and another into his thigh. He stopped and turned to look at her, bright pink blood running down his leg and back. He laughed. “You’re going to be so much fun.”
The courts tended to look down on spinal injuries, but when a round in the torso and thigh didn’t slow him down, she didn’t feel like she had much choice. She took aim again and fired at the base of his tail. His tail dropped like a dead weight, and he cried out.
The pain dropped him to his knees. Sidra finished the motion by jumping between his shoulder blades to put him flat on the deck. She cuffed his hands behind his back, and secured his ankles with shackles before motioning Dliz to come in.
“Call for medical for Sool and for the idiot here.”
Dliz made the call and medical teams arrived in less than a minute.
“Damn,” Sidra said, “I guess bureaucracy is good for something after all.”
Soolyasin was awake by the time he was loaded onto a stretcher. There didn’t seem to be any broken bones, but he’d been thrown rather hard by Otto’s tail strike. “Sorry I wasn’t any help,” he said.
“Nonsense. I’m sorry I sent you in there and you got hurt. I’m splitting the bounty three ways, even across with both of you.”
“I can’t take any payment,” Dliz said. “It’s against the regulations for police to have any outside earnings.”
“You saved my bacon, though. If you hadn’t been enough of an inconvenience with the beam, he would’ve tail swiped me before I could draw.”
“Still can’t accept any payments or monetary gifts.”
“How about this? You two have been friends forever, right? I’ll pay your portion to Sool, and he can treat you to fancy dinners for the rest of your life.”
“Wha...how much is the bounty?”
“Three-point-seven million Terran credits. About sixteen million galactic.”
Dliz’s eyes rolled in yet another motion. “Damned bureaucracy.”

2023.06.02 02:19 hackzubbard 2024 Post-Spring/Pre-Summer Recruiting Overview
We're now in that sweet spot after A-Day and before Summer OVs/Camp Season where it makes sense to take note and reflect. Remember that camp season likely changes this board dramatically and we'll see a good # of decision (both to Alabama and elsewhere) throughout June and early July.
Rankings Note: Every comic is someone's first so here's how to read/interpret/understand the rankings listed below: Commits and Top Targets will show their 247 Composite Rank, their On3 Composite, and their Comp
2 Ranking, which is just the raw average of the 2 composite ranks, rounded down. This overview will just reflect the pre-summer top targets/names to know and not the full list. Summer camp season will drastically change this list (new big board in July/August)
# of 4/5* change each year but I like a little consistency so here's generally how I arbitrarily split it, based on the average year-over-year data:
5*: #1-#32
4*: #33-#350
3*: #351-#2000
QB (1 Needed/1 Commited) Overview: Barring something crazy, a team's QB will be the most important player on the field 9 times out of 10. Bama's looked around for a potential 2nd option but is pretty content with their 5* QB of the Future already commited
Name | H.S. | Rank | Notes |
Commits | | | |
1. 5* Julian Sayin | Carlsbad in Carlsbad, CA (SoCal) | 247: #11 , On3: #14, Comp2: #12 | One of the most "ready" prospects in the 2024 class, Julian is very skilled at every facet of QB play - might not be the highest ceiling from an NFL perspective but very likely the highest floor. Julian commited to Alabama somewhat out of the blue but has been locked in since and the Tide's primary leader on offense in this class. This is your QB of the Future. |
RB (1-2 Needed/0 Commited) Overview: Alabama has good RB depth heading into 2023 but could very likely lose both Jase and Roydell at the end of the year so 2 RBs again this cycle feels right. It's doubtful it'll have the star power of the Haynes/Young duo from '23 but I would not sleep on the 2024 targets.
Name | H.S. | Rank | Notes |
Top Targets | | | |
1. 4* Kevin Riley | Tuscaloosa County in Northport, AL (Tuscaloosa area) | 247: #97, On3: #102, Comp2: #99 | A homegrown talent, Riley does it all, running with great balance, breaks contact and gets going in a hurry. Top 3 of Bama, Auburn, UGA - this should end up being an Iron Bowl battle that Alabama wins, though it does appear Riley might take his time. If Alabama pushes hard, he could be a summer commit. |
2. 4* Daniel Hill | Meridian in Meridian, MS (E MS) | 247: #196, On3: #194, Comp2: #195 | One of the more unique RB prospects, Daniel Hill is a big bodied guy but plays a ton of receiver as well - not a comparison but could have a Najee Harris-esque roll. Alabama is battling South Carolina here, with the Cocks having some buzz after an early Bama lean. Bama is not done here but might need to press harder. |
3. 4* Nate Frazier | Mater Dei in Santa Ana, CA (SoCal) | 247: #76, On3: #74, Comp2: #75 | One of the nation's top RB prospects with some of the best long speed, Nate Frazier will push for #1 back status in 2024. Frazier is pretty wide open currently, being highly desired by both the local west coast school and the SEC powerhouses. I'd have trouble projecting him anywhere yet but it would be really cool if it was Alabama. |
WR (2-4 Needed/2 Commited) Overview: Alabama has taken 10 non-transfer WRs over the past 2 cycles so while I think they'll take a normal # in 2024, I'd lean more towards 3 than 4 total, unless a 'best available' type wants in
Name | H.S. | Rank | Notes |
Commits | | | |
1. 5* Perry Thompson | Foley in Foley, AL (Mobile area) | 247: #27, On3: #29, Comp2: #28 | A taller receiver, Perry thrives with straight-line speed and a suprising ability to weave through space - Thompson earned his offer last season in camp routing up 2023 5* DBs. As a high-ranking prospect, Perry is somewhat keeping his options open and will likely take visits but has repeatedly reaffirmed his commit - Alabama's steady pursuit should allow them to hold on. |
2. 4* Rico Scott | Bishop McDevitt in Harrisburg, PA (Cent PA) | 247: #372, On3: #289, Comp2: #330 | A real smooth operator - plays RB and WR and is at his best going up the field. A bit of a suprise to some, Bama had seen him previously in camp and then watched his fall progress and saw what they needed to pull the trigger. I think we'll finish in the top 150-170 |
Top Targets | | | |
1. 4* Amari Jefferson | Baylor School in Chattanooga, TN | 247: #270, On3: #288, Comp2: #279 | My favorite realistic WR addition - his vertical and lateral speed POP off the screen, looks like a top 75 guy. Currently a Tennessee baseball commit, football is his likely future, as Alabama and Georgia battle it out. This will be a tough battle but one I very much hope the Tide wins. |
2. 4* Aeryn Hampton | Carthage in Carthage, TX (E TX) | 247: #116, On3: #126, Comp2: #121 | More fast than quick, Aeryn runs like a RB, weaving through traffic and hitting the jets. Aeryn has been up-front about his love for Alabama and has narrowed his list to Bama and Texas, his former commitment. Aeryn has the green light to commit but seems like a guy who could go back and forth so unclear where this ends up. |
3. 4* Cam Coleman | Central in Phenix City, AL (E AL) | 247: #54, On3: #25, Comp2: #38 | This guy's the real deal - big bodied but with slot speed and one of the best high-pointers in the class. Alabama's been trying to get him on campus and he's been uninterested, so the communication has been laid back. Cam and Perry Thompson kinda fill the same role so it's not a huge concern but Auburn is leading here and would give Hugh Freeze a real weapon. |
TE (1-2 Needed/0 Commited) Overview: I think *how* Tommy Rees constructed/called his ND offenses is a bit overblown in how his Bama offenses will look (you play with the talent you have) but Bama has been trying to find their Kyle Pitts/Brock Bowers/Michael Mayer for years now - really since OJ Howard/Irv Smith with a brief detour into Jahleel Billingsley. Alabama would like multiple bodies here if available but would really like a least one really good on in 2024

Top Targets | | | |
1. 4* Caleb Odom | Carrollton in Carrollton, GA (W GA) | 247: #85, On3: #69, Comp2: #77 | A true mismatch nightmare, Odom is a true receiving threat TE, big bodied with room to grow but a little slender currently. Caleb is kinda wide open at the moment but this feels like one where Bama should start to push, with UGA snagging two of their targets in Jaden Reddell and Colton Heinrich |
OL (4-5 Needed/0 Commited) Overview: Alabama brought in a big OL class in 2023, which is already living up to expectations behind the scenes. They'll try to repeat the process in 2024, as they continue to re-tool their OL room
Name | H.S. | Rank | Notes |
Top Targets | | | |
1. 4* OT Daniel Calhoun | Walton in Marietta, GA (Atlanta Metro) | 247: #86, On3: #106, Comp2: #96 | A mammoth of a prospect, Calhoun has the look of a SEC lineman, able to play on the left or right side of the offensive line. Top 3 of Bama, UGA, and Texas but suprise suprise, this looks like another Bama/UGA battle. Feel better about Bama in this one but it's close and OVs will be big. |
2. 4* IOL Casey Poe | Lindale in Lindale, TX (E TX) | 247: #142, On3: #134, Comp2: #138 | One of the most coveted interior prospects, Poe boasts both a mean streak as well as the ability to move the center, making him about as A1 as you can get for an interior OL prospect. Top 3 currently would be Alabama, Oklahoma, and UGA. Will be a tough battle but Alabama is the perceived leader heading into visits. Bama REALLY wants him. |
3. 4* OL Jordan Seaton | IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL (Originally from Washington DC) | 247: #41, On3: #42, Comp2: #41 | Big, athletic frame who could end up playing inside or out - Seaton prefers OT but somecurrently leaning towards IOL. Ohio State was and is very involved but Bama/UGA feel like the primary players since making the move to IMG. I believe he visited for the A-Day game and it certainly seems like Bama will be an option until the end here. |
4. 4* OT Marques Easley | Kankakee in Kankakee, IL (NE IL) | 247: #263, On3: #240, Comp2: #251 | A longer and leaner tackle prospect, Bama and UGA are again involved with Tennessee being the 3rd team in the mix, as well as the possible leader. Despite the Vols' early lead, this one can really go any direction after visits. |
5. 4* OT Weston Davis | Beaumont United in Beaumont, TX (SE TX) | 247: #180, On3: #124, Comp2: #152 | A basketball-first prospect with high-upside as an OT, Davis has some interest in Bama but local programs like Texas A&M are getting some good recent buzz. Think it'll be paramount for Weston to camp. |
DL (3-4 Needed/1 Commited) Overview: Another unit Alabama's been trying to step-up, talent is a necessity in 2024
Name | H.S. | Rank | Notes |
Commits | | | |
1. 4* DE Jeremiah Beamon | Parker in Birmingham, AL | 247: #103, On3: #98, Comp2: #100 | Alabama's most recent commitment, Jeremiah is a FORCE rushing the passer, a little undersized with plenty of room to grow before a potential reneissance. If that sounds like Quinnen Williams, it's because that's the comp he's been getting. Many thought he'd be a sooner or later kinda commit and he went ahead and stopped messing around. |
Top Targets | | | |
1. 5* DE Eddrick Houston | Buford in Buford, GA (Atlanta Metro) | 247: #15, On3: #15, Comp2: #15 | High upside, athleticism, and flexibility - bit of a tweener for the Saban defense who could slim down to an Anfernee Jennings role and add some weight to try and emulate Jonathan Allen. Another prospect that I think comes down to Bama and UGA, I feel better about Bama's chances here than with Eddrick's Buford teammate, KJ Bolden. |
2. 4* DT Terrance Hibler | Holmes County Central in Lexington, MS (Cent MS) | 247: #281, On3: #368, Comp2: #324 | A bit undersized, Terrance makes up for it with violence, punch, and pure 'want-to'. Alabama has made a great early impression, alongside local Miss State, and the Tide are in a great spot if they choose to push here. |
3. 3* DE Utah Commit Isaia Faga | Central in Phenix City, AL (E AL) | 247: #733, On3: #676, Comp2: #704 | Alabama has seen some recent success with Pacific Island players but it's rare to have one so local. Isaia excels at getting through traffic and getting into the backfield. Isaia's uncle is the Utah DL coach, leading to the early commitment, but Alabama is interested in seeing him camp and who knows where it could go from there. |
EDGE (1-2 Needed/1 Commited) Overview: The highest star rating per capita, talent is hardly a problem here but we'd love to have more.
Name | H.S. | Rank | Notes |
Commits | | | |
1. 4* Cayden Jones | Christ School in Arden, NC (W NC) | 247: #147, On3: #171, Comp2: #159 | Alabama has been looking more and more at hybrid LB types who could end up on the EDGE or off-ball (Jihaad Campell, Qua Russaw) - Cayden Jones is another, playing a ton off-ball and walking down to the edge and will likely project into a Terrell Lewis/Dallas Turner - type role. Since last year, Cayden had been up-front about wanting the green light to commit and jumped on it when he got the chance. |
Top Targets | | | |
1. 5* Dylan Stewart | Friendship Collegiate Academy in Washington DC | 247: #10, On3: #9, Comp2: #9 | Maybe the top pure Edge guy, Dylan reminds me of Keon Keeley from last cycle; similar build, bend and length. Visits to Alabama, Ohio State, Miami, South Carolina and UGA have put all 5 in contention, similar to Keeley. I'd give the Gamecocks and Hurricanes the edge going into the summer but Alabama is RIGHT there and another visit to campus could flip the script. |
2. 4* Jordan Ross | Vestavia Hills in Birmingham, AL | 247: #38, On3: #33, Comp2: #35 | A high-end Edge, Jordan flashes natural talent that can only grow with development. A little undersized, Alabama has told him to gain weight and camp prior to a serious pursuit, giving UGA and Tennessee an early lead. This could change quickly this summer, as Jordan finds his way onto campus. |
3. 5* Colin Simmons | Duncanville in Duncanville, TX (DFW Metro) | 247: #4, On3: #3, Comp2: #3 | One of the Nation's top athletes, Simmons effortlessly flies around off the edge. LSU and Texas are battling it out thus far but Alabama will continue to work here. |
LB (2-3 Needed/1 Commited) Overview: There's somewhat of a logjam of older player at the LB position so I would expect attrition after 2023, which will need to be replaced by incoming players.
Name | H.S. | Rank | Notes |
Commits | | | |
1. 4* Sterling Dixon | Mobile Christian School in Mobile, AL | 247: #188, On3: #164, Comp2: #176 | Similar to Cayden Jones, Sterling is another hybrid type - beginning as an edge type with some off-ball experience, Sterling will transition to ILB this offseason for Mobile Christian and then at Alabama. A long-time commit, Sterling will take some visits but there's not a huge concern there. |
Top Targets | | | |
1. 5* UGA Commit Demarcus Riddick | Chilton County in Clanton, AL (Cent AL) | 247: #25, On3: #38, Comp2: #31 | Demarcus is an excellent example of a modern LB and exactly what Alabama wants from the position: excellent weaving through traffic, sideline-to-sideline movement and can shade down to rush the passer. An early UGA commit, the strength of that commitment has wavered significantly and while there's still some work to do, the feeling is he could very likely flip to Alabama over the summer. |
2. 5* Justin Williams | Oak Ridge in Conroe, TX (Houston area) | 247: #13, On3: #12, Comp2: #12 | Similarly archetypal LB prospect: a bit slight at the moment, he makes up for it with WR-level speed and burst, making him a real weapon against a high-powered offense. Oregon, Alabama, and UGA are the likely top 3 - Bama made a good impression this spring but needs to get him back on campus ASAP - feels like UGA could swoop in here if Riddick flips. |
3. 4* Bradley Shaw | Hoover in Hoover, AL (Birmingham area) | 247: #176, On3: #139, Comp2: #157 | More of a traditional ILB, football IQ and sure tackling give him a Shaun Dion Hamilton feel. Alabama, Auburn, and UGA are the top 3 schools and this feels like Iron Bowl battle, where Alabama will win or lose based on how they push to reel him in. |
DB (4-5 Needed/1 commited) Overview: You gotta take a solid # of DBs every cycle but CB is one of the most important/most needed positions in 2024 after losses to the transfer portal.
Name | H.S. | Rank | Notes |
Commits | | | |
1. 5* CB Jaylen Mbakwe | Clay-Chalkville in Pinson, AL (Birmingham area) | 247: #19, On3: #17, Comp2: #18 | A legitimate two-way player, Mbakwe, like Kool-Aid before him, could have been a 5* WR as well as DB but prefers defense. Jaylen is the defensive leader of the class and will be pretty instrumental in how the defensive class comes together. |
Top Targets | | | |
1. 5* CB Charles Lester III | Riverview in Sarasota, FL (Cent FL) | 247: #16, On3: #19, Comp2: #17 | An all-around athlete with the ability to play multiple DB positions, CL3 could be commited or off the board at any moment. There's a clear interest in Alabama on his end but the Tide have yet to really push, leaving the door wide open for FSU. He OVs on June 3rd so it's likely that we'll have a better idea of where Bama goes after that. |
2. 4* CB Jameer Grimsley | Tampa Catholic in Tampa, FL | 247: #230, On3: #195, Comp2: #212 | Somewhat of the prototypical Saban corner, with a long and lean build and a wingspan for days. Jameer has seen his recruitment skyrocket this spring and schools like Bama, FSU, and Penn State are pushing. Bama's got a great shot for this prospect who should continue to rise. |
3. 4* S UGA Commit Peyton Woodward | St. John Bosco in Bellflower, CA (SoCal) | 247: #69, On3: #70, Comp2: #69 | Peyton shows good play speed and flows to the target in run defense; a good balanced safety. Peyton has not been shy about letting other programs try to flip him from the Dawgs and his family is full of Alabama fans, making the Tide a very possible flip option. |
4. 4* CB Zabien Brown | Mater Dei in Santa Ana, CA (SoCal) | 247: #57, On3: #56 , Comp2: #56 | Zabien is a physical pass defender who excels at getting in passing lanes and making plays on the ball - not a specimen but a true competitor. As a Mater Dei kid, the axiom has been USC most often has first right of refusal so we'll see how the summer visits go and if Bama can/will make a push here. |
5. 5* S KJ Bolden | Buford in Buford, GA (Atlanta Metro) | 247: #8, On3: #5, Comp2: #6 | Likely the top DB in the 2024 class, KJ is how they come; a true 5* safety. UGA has a healthy lead thus far but Bama (alongside others) will have a chance to fight back during summer OVs |
6. 5* CB UGA Commit Ellis Robinson IV | IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL (Originally from CT) | 247: #5, On3: #7, Comp2: #6 | One of the stickiest DBs in the class, Ellis was the other 5* CB alongside Alabama freshman Desmond Ricks at IMG in 2023. Alabama led early but UGA got the momentum and the commitment. It's likely Ellis will take visits, including a potential OV to Alabama, but I would not predict a flip to Alabama at this time or in the future. |

2023.05.31 19:38 dreamingofislay Feis Ile 2023 Day Five Bowmore & Ardnahoe Day Recap (5/31)
| Back at it for Day Five of the Feis! Today's the first day split between two whisky distilleries, the island's oldest (Bowmore) and its newest (Ardnahoe). This doubling up is going to be happening more because several new distilleries are opening here (Port Ellen, Portintruan, ili, and Laggan Bay) in the next few years. The Kinship tasting in a handsome back room of the Ardnahoe Visitor Center - Bowmore absolutely killed it in terms of fan service this year. Let's tick off why. First, one of the best swag bags of the week: mini-glencairn glass, lanyard, bung stopper coaster, little lock souvenir, carabinekeychain ring, and a postcard, all in a nice canvas bag. Second, although most of their tastings were bookable in advance, they kept a few slots and events for people to book on arrival, a real treat for those who couldn't snag a ticket online. Third, they had carnival games in the courtyard with nice prizes for winners, including a shuffleboard contest where the day's high scorer would win this year's Feis bottle.
- And fourth, and most importantly, Bowmore had a killer dram bar that was exactly what I hoped Laphroaig would do yesterday. Everyone got two free dram tokens good for a Bowmore 12 or 15, but the real treat was the cash bar. Want to try the 2023 Feis bottle? 6 pounds. Beyond that, they had a "last drop" menu with prices between 5-15 pounds to try expressions from the last 15 years of Bowmore's history, including a 21-year Port distilled in 1988, an ex-bourbon 21-year-old from 1989, on and on. This is why real whisky lovers want to come to Feis: to try bottles they would never see, probably never even hear about, at home. Bravo on the tasting bar, and a clear win for Bowmore vs. Laphroaig among the Beam Suntory distilleries this year.
- My only slight negative note is that Bowmore's facility isn't laid out very well for the festival which, fair enough, it's a working distillery, not a party hall. It just so happens that Laphroaig and Caol Ila have these big, wide-open spaces to allow people to congregate. Bowmore's is long and narrow, and around the back of the plant up against the sea, so it funnels people away from the bands and the live music.
- It is well worth visiting Ardnahoe on this shared day. The distillery is a stark contrast to its older siblings: ultra-modern and sleek, with huge, airy spaces, reminding me more of a high-end winery in Rioja or Napa Valley. Even the stillhouse has floor-to-ceiling windows with a jawdropping view of the water and Jura. The gift shop has dozens of independent bottlings from all over Scotland thanks to Ardnahoe being owned by Hunter Laing. Probably the best single bottle shop on the island. And it may also have the best tasting bar; the menu is a leatherbound book with dozens of offerings and low prices. 5-7.5 pounds for 20-year-old-plus whiskies, which is unheard of, at least in the U.S.
- Premium events on Feis Ile are often very good values. The Kinship tasting at Ardnahoe is a good example. Kinship is their annual release around festival time and consists of six old and rare expressions (this year's ranged from an unusually young Bruichladdich 18 to two 33-year-old Islay whiskies from Bunnahabhain and Caol Ila). While the ticket was pricey at 100 pounds, the bottles average over 500 pounds, close to 20 pounds per 25 ml pour. Doing the math, these six whiskies cost less per dram at the tasting than in the bottles.
- Ardnahoe's own single malt is coming out next year for the first time. I asked them to describe it, and they said it's supposed to be "fruit forward, smoke second," peated to around 40 ppm so between Bowmore and the Ardbeg/Laphroaig/Lagavulin trio. Only Islay distillery to use worm tub condensers and with the longest still arms in Scotland, all enhancing the fruitiness of their spirit. So excited to try it next year and hoping a few bottles make it stateside.
- We do do non-whisky events now and then! Today's was a pottery painting experience at Persabus Pottery, a small cottage shop that sells gorgeous painted pottery and also lets customers paint their own pre-made clay items, ranging from plates to tea kettles to small jugs. The cost of the experience is the cost of the item (most are in the 25-50-pound range; I did a 22.5-pound dinner plate) plus a 2-pound-per-person studio fee for the use of the paints and equipment. It's a serene interlude from a week of downing whiskies. This fun time is available year-round, so I highly recommend it. Here's my poor man's take on Machir Bay, before firing:
Machir Bay, interpreted by a truly horrific artist - The people here are so friendly it's unbelievable. I was hanging out in line before Bowmore opened and struck up a conversation with a couple who booked a holiday here not realizing it was Feis week. Turned out, they had tickets to a Laphroaig-run trivia night tonight and couldn't go, and they gave me the passes for free. I wish them good karma for the rest of their trip!
Another day of epic drams, and still a Laphroaig-fueled evening to go: Bowmore Feis Ile 2023 18 y.o. - Pulled out of oloroso and PX sherry casks, this is a classic, strong example of Bowmore's distillery character. The kind of dram I'd have someone try if they wanted to understand what Bowmore aims to do. Sultanas, dried fruit, rich and sweet. Kinship 2023 Bunnahabhain 33 y.o. - Another ex-bourbon Bunnahabhain, a rarity. Paul from Ardnahoe gave "heather honey" as a main note, and I'm not going to gainsay his description. It's a classic old ex-bourbon dram with waxy, fruity sweetness and a hint of fresh ginger on the finish. Kinship 2023 Bruichladdich 18 y.o. red wine cask - By far the darkest dram on the table, and my wife's instant favorite. I called the nose chocolate milkshake; she said malted milk balls and root beer float. Point is: rich, dessert-like aromas, followed by an intense sweet, spicy, and tannic attack that's so characteristic of red wine-matured whiskies and almost resembles a cask-strength bourbon at times. Kinship 2023 Highland Park 27 y.o. - My favorite of the day, with a chameleon of a nose that started out farmy and funky but transformed over about half an hour to apple pie. The palate was a little medicinal and complex, but the highlight was the finish that burst with floral and orchard fruit notes. Kinship 2023 Caol Ila 33 y.o. - Just had an older, Douglas Laing Caol Ila 40 earlier in the trip, so it's interesting to try a Hunter Laing now. The two brothers who inherited the company from their father split it down the middle in the aughts, dividing the casks in half, so they have very similar bottlings. This one was a crowd-pleaser and won a survey of all tasting groups today as the collection favorite. Loads of lemon, and then a warming leathery/barbecue smoke on the finish. Kinship 2023 Bowmore 27 y.o. - My second favorite, this had the most fantastic tropical fruit flavors of any whisky so far this week. Old Bowmore really leans toward that direction, and this one does it to the umpteenth degree. Kinship 2023 Laphroaig 25 y.o. - The more Laphroaig I try, the more I'm reminded of why it's my favorite distillery. Its medicinal, maritime, yet sweet and fruity (as it matures) profile is instantly recognizable. This one didn't veer off the beaten path at all; could easily mistake it for an exceptional official bottling. Slainte! Three days left: Kilchoman, Bunnahabhain, and Ardbeg. I wish I never had to leave. UPDATE: Complete festival recap series linked below. Day One, Lagavulin Day Two, Bruichladdich, but we skipped and did Bunnahabhain Day Three, Caol Ila Day Four, Laphroaig Bonus notes from Days One through Five Day Six, Kilchoman Day Seven, Bunnahabhain Day, but we did Lagavulin and Ardbeg warehouse tastings Day Eight, Ardbeg Bonus post with my personal festival awards submitted by dreamingofislay to Scotch [link] [comments] |
2023.05.31 16:22 Noblesse311 Character Concept [109]: SMS Prinz Heinrich (World of Warships)
Faction:
Ironblood Kaiserreich (Imperial Federation of Germany)
Class:
Ersatz Yorck-class Battlecruiser
Background:
In an alternate timeline…
On 29 October 1918, a rebellion broke out amongst the sailors at Wilhelmshaven, with similar unrest breaking out on 3 November 1918 that led to the Kiel mutiny, these events, in which the sailors and workers in both cities began electing workers’ and soldiers’ councils modelled after similar councils of the 1917 October Revolution would be the catalyst that started the German Revolution of 1918-1919. By 7 November, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), specifically the pro-parliamentary Majority SPD (MSPD, to differentiate from the pro-Soviet-styled Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany or USPD) would take charge of the revolution, joining the calls for Wilhelm II to abdicate. Despite the Kaiser’s refusal, Germany’s chancellor, Maximilian von Zähringen, himself the heir to the throne of the Grand Duchy of Baden, would announce that the Kaiser and his son, Crown Prince Wilhelm had already abdicated.
On 9 November, Philipp Shiedemann, the State Secretary under Max von Baden was dining with Friedrich Ebert. As an SPD member was late for the meeting at the restaurant, Philipp Scheidemann would dine directly at the same table as Friedrich Ebert. It was there that both men would receive the news that Karl Leibknecht of the USPD was to announce the establishment of a Soviet Republic. While Shiedemann wanted to maintain the initiative for the MSPD by proclaiming a German Republic instead, he was talked down from doing so by Ebert, citing that the decision must be decided by the constituent assembly.
\1]) Regardless, Leibknecht would announce the establishment of the Free Socialist Republic of Germany, followed two days later with the signing of the armistice at Compiègne two days later.
The move not to align with the USPD led to a rift between the two wings of the SPD, that would dominate the German Revolution, a fact furthered by Baden and Ebert meeting with General Wilhelm Groener, leader of Germany’s Supreme Army Command. The Baden-Groener Pact, concluded on 10 November, ensured the loyalty of the military and its support against leftist forces, and ensured that the military, limited by the Treaty of Versailles, would remain fully in control by the German officer class. This would prove handy however, as the row between MSPD and USPD deepened when far-leftist groups in the latter broke away to form the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and launch what would become the Spartacist Uprising in January 1919. The uprising was put down by the Freikorps and their leaders were effectively executed, and with the affirmation of Ebert and Baden, those responsible were not court-martialed and the worst offenders suffered lenient sentences, which made the government unpopular with the far-left.
As for the far-right however, while there were still misgivings about the new government, the fact of the matter remained that the monarchy still existed as an official institution, and indeed, many Allied and German leaders, both in support and in opposition to the war, favored transitioning Germany into a full Constitutional Monarchy
\2]), which would be achieved with the 1919 German Constitution, also known as the Weimar Imperial Constitution. (in reference to the 1871 Constitution also being known as Bismarck’s Imperial Constitution)
\3]) Although there were considerations to install one of the male sons of Crown Prince Wilhelm to become Kaiser, their young ages (the eldest, another Prince Wilhelm was twelve at the time) and the danger of a regency in such trying times forced the decision to instead put the Crown Prince younger brother, and the Kaiser’s fourth son, Prince August Wilhelm as the new Kaiser, becoming August I of what became known as the German Imperial Federation.
\4])
The 1920s in Germany would be dominated by the desire to restore the prestige and privileges as to be expected by a European nation, chiefly the withdrawal of Entente troops from the Rhineland. Citing the need to ensure the status quo, the chief negotiator, Gustav Stresemann would negotiate with Britain and France to recognize and abandon its claims to German territory lost during the Great War, in exchange for a loosening of its military restrictions citing the communist threats to the east in the form of Soviet Russia, now the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and the communist states that survived from it, the Hungarian Soviet Republic and the People’s Republic of Bulgaria. The result from these negotiations nearly led to a break, as France (itself slowly falling into the grip of far-left politics) not only did not wish to see Germany rearm in any capacity, but was also still keen on trying to detach the Rhineland from Germany (with the far-right even desiring its integration into France) something that had been thwarted by the limited German authorities in the zone as well as by the British who saw an attempt in 1923 and 1925 off, causing financial and diplomatic damage between France and the British. In spite of everything, many of the sides did get something out of the deal in the Treaty of Locarno, with Germany repudiating its claims to lost territories and a loosening of military restrictions in order to assist in seeing off the Communist threat. As part of the Locarno Treaty was a Naval Agreement, ratified by British Parliament and the German Reichstag that would effectively bring Berlin into the Washington Naval Treaty system, setting its maximum tonnage at 35% of the current tonnage in service under the Royal Navy, a move that would anger the French and push them closer to the Soviet Union.
\5])
One of the results from this was the revival of Germany’s capital ship program, largely left moribund following Germany’s defeat in World War I. Initially, designs were planned for a cruiser with pre-dreadnought-sized main guns to serve as a replacement for the older Braunschweig-class pre-dreadnoughts in order to remain compliant to the old treaty, but with the new naval agreement put in place. The planned ships were canceled and instead development shifted to the construction of a new battlecruiser which was to be laid down by 1929. The design used was to be the old Ersatz Yorck-class design, retaining the 380mm main guns in four twin turrets, as well as her secondaries, twelve 150mm guns in single turrets, but would see the inclusion of Anti-Aircraft armament in the form of 88mm Flak guns in twin turrets and 37mm guns, also in twin turrets. The reasoning for why the Ersatz Yorck design was chosen in a slightly modified form was mainly to avoid stepping on the shells of the British, a design that would largely be viewed as dated by comparison (the original design was completed in 1916, and the planned lead ship was laid down that year, but was never completed due to a shift to U-Boat construction and was ultimately scrapped in 1918) but would serve as a stepping stone towards Germany among equals with the other great powers. The lead ship, which would keep the provisional name as its official name, SMS Yorck, was laid down on 5 February 1929, launched on 19 May 1931 and commissioned on 1 April 1933. SMS Prinz Heinrich (named after the Kaiser’s uncle), originally readopting the old provisional name “Ersatz Scharnhorst” and the second ship in her class would in turn, be laid down on 25 June 1931 at the Kaiserliche Reichsmarinewerft Wilhelmshaven (KRW) shipyard. She was launched on 1 April 1933 and commissioned on 12 November 1934. Heinrich herself would be followed by the third and final ship in that class, SMS Friedrich Barbarossa (formerly “Ersatz Gneisenau”), commissioned on 6 January 1936.
\6])
Heinrich’s career would be dominated by developments wrought outside of Germany. The French Revolution of 1934 by the French Communist Party and its sympathizers led by Maurice Thorez would see the final repudiation of the Versailles Treaty, and in essence began both a naval arms race between France and Germany (the Dunkerques being developed as a response to Germany’s Hipper-class Heavy Cruisers, which in turn, led to the development of the Scharnhorst-class and later Bismarck-class Battleships) and a diplomatic effort between the forces of democracy against the Communist threat posed by the Soviet Union and the newly established French Commune. This diplomatic effort would see a close friendship, though not a formal alliance between Britain and Germany. The alliance (formally known as the Central European Alliance, though informally known as the Tübingen Accord) however would be with a number of states threatened by the spread of Communism across Europe. The battlecruiser herself would find herself involved in affairs with Spain and their civil war and their participation in non-intervention patrols (in reality, supplying arms to the nationalists in the face of French arms and equipment, and ultimately, upon a near Republican-Communist victory, the withdrawal of the Spanish Nationalists and Carlists from Spain)
Heinrich would spend the second half of 1939 and much of early 1940 on drydock for repairs and refit, during which the Second Great War would begin on 6 October 1939 with the Soviet invasion of Poland, a member of the Tübingen Accord. The French, using their tanks to invade the Low Countries in order to circumvent the Westwall, attempted to catch the Germans by surprise in a move that seem like a reversal of the Schlieffen Plan the Germans used against the French in the last war, but this French thrust was kept at bay, with parts of the Province of Hanover and the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg being captured by the Communards, with one instance seeing the titular Grand Duke, Friedrich August II, captured and swiftly executed for the crime of “being born into a family of tyrants.” Fortunately, Heinrich’s refit was to be completed in Kiel, and therefore, avoided having to be evacuated when Wilhelmshaven fell on 25 May 1940.
Upon Prinz Heinrich’s return to service on 6 June 1940, she would take part in a number of convoy escort operations between Germany and Norway after the northern part of the country was occupied by the Red Army. This would become the Mannheim Project convoys, in which Norway’s facilities specializing in the production of deuterium oxide, better known as heavy water would allow the materials to be shipped to Germany for the development of a nuclear reactor, a means to combat the Bolsheviks. Support for this endeavor would be furthered with Britain’s entry into the war in October 1940, and it would be often times when Heinrich would be joined by Battlecruisers HMS Hood or HMS Renown, two ships of whom Prinz Heinrich was originally designed to counter a quarter-century prior.
On 10 July 1942, one such convoy, Convoy WL 252 would be shadowed by French naval forces, led by French battleship Solidarité
\7]). Dudley Pound, the First Sea Lord ordered the covering force to engage this force, leading to the Battle of the Celtic Sea. This battle, which featured SMS Prinz Heinrich and HMS Duke of York as well as a number of destroyers and cruisers, saw Prinz Heinrich enter into a gunnery duel with Solidarité. While Duke of York was the one who knocked out the battleship’s superfiring and rear turret, it was Heinrich that knocked out Solidarité’s boiler room, leaving her vulnerable to a pummeling by the allied forces, with the battleship’s attempt to get away thwarted by torpedo hits from German torpedo boat SMS S223, which reduced Solidarité’s speed and allowing the battleships to continue their bombardment until, unable to flee and wracked with so many hits, Solidarité capsized and sank. Though a major surface threat was eliminated, WL 252 would find herself sunk by Soviet bombers.
The tide began to turn on the Comintern in 1943 as the British began their slog into Spain and Germany and their eastern allies began pushing the Soviets back, successfully pushing them out of Poland, with Heinrich taking part in bombardment duties in the Gulf of Riga, and providing fire support for the German aerial attack on the Soviet Baltic Fleet at Leningrad. After another brief refit, Heinrich would be sent to Königsburg to retrieve the dead body of Kaiser August after a Soviet agent successfully assassinated the Kaiser on 20 June 1944, leaving the throne in the hands of his son, Alexander Ferdinand, now Alexander I of Germany. The last major actions Prinz Heinrich would take part in was in the Black Sea, supporting Allied incursions into the Black Sea coast of the Russian Soviet Republic, and was one of the few ships that made it into the Sea of Azov, albeit paying for it with a rocket strike that crippled the ship and would spend the immediate post-war years in drydock. The war ended with a defeat for the Comintern, with the communist governments toppled and some nations winning their independence from the defeated powers.
Rapidly made obsolete by newer big gun ships such as the Victoria Louise-class (originally the O-class) and the advent of aircraft carriers, Prinz Heinrich was decommissioned on 24 April 1949. By the request of Alexander I, she would become a museum ship in Wilhelmshaven, G.D. Oldenburg as part of the Friedrich August Memorial Naval Museum.
\1]: IOTL, Scheidemann would dine at a separate table from Ebert when he got the news. As a result, Scheidemann, of his own accord, would proclaim the German Republic, effectively ensuring that whatever happened, that the monarchy would be abolished entirely. The events in the paragraph serve as the Point of Divergence.)
\2]: While the German Empire [and in particular the Kingdom of Prussia] did have a Constitution, the Constitution of 1871, in reality the state was always run as a Semi-Constitutional Monarchy with the Kaiser holding significant power in a system that would be popularly called “Prussian Constitutionalism.”)
\3]: To define the 1919 German constitution ITTL, it’s the Weimar Constitution of OTL, albeit with the powers attributed to the President of Germany in the OTL Weimar Republic instead being placed in the hands of the Kaiser. In essence, the Kaiser would still retain various powers, while losing a number of powers that the position held under the 1871 Constitution. While I could’ve went with something more akin to the 1949 Constitution and have the Kaiser serve in a more ceremonial capacity from the start, the Weimar Constitution was probably the most democratic in many respects for its age, only undone by the constitutional loopholes that would be expected by a constitution for its time, as well as the various extremist groups hatred for the Republic, chiefly the far-right [and in particular the Nazis] who constantly preached that the Weimar Republic was not created by Germans but was actually imposed upon them as part of the hated Treaty of Versailles.)
\4]: Prince August Wilhelm is, to put mildly, a fairly controversial figure among the Hohenzollern imperial family. Nicknamed “Auwi,” he was a close personal friend of Hans Georg von Mackensen, a diplomat and eldest son of Field Marshal August von Mackensen, said personal friendship implied to have “pronounced homophillic tendencies.” After the abolishment of the German monarchy, he would join conservative nationalist movements and ultimately the Nazi Party in 1930 against the wishes of his father. August Wilhelm’s adoration of Hitler would play a role in the man’s rise to power come 1933, and it was his hope that Hitler would install him or his son on the vacant throne, a hope that would be dashed after the Enabling Act and would be left in the political wilderness.)
\5]: IOTL, the Anglo-German Naval Agreement was made in 1935, in part due to Britain seeking to limit German expansion by arms reduction, and Germany hoping for an Anglo-German alliance aimed towards the Soviet Union and France, as well as the former’s guilt over what was seen as harsh terms set on the Germans with Versailles.)
\6]: If the dates do not sound familiar to anyone, these are the dates that the first, second and third Deutschland-class Panzerschiff/Heavy Cruiser were laid down, launched and/or commissioned, with the Ersatz Yorck, now just the Yorck-class Battlecruisers all but replacing the Deutschlands in this timeline.)
\7]: Basically Communist Richelieu)
—
Prinz Heinrich is the Tier VII Battleship (Tier VI in World of Warships: Legends) representing the Battlecruiser tech tree in Wargaming’s World of Warships. Heinrich represents the
Ersatz Yorck-class Battlecruisers, the final battlecruiser design developed by the German Empire. Originally developed as Mackensen-class Battlecruisers, lessons learned from Jutland saw the gun increased to 380mm, utilizing the same guns as the Bayern-class Battleships. Like the Mackensen-class however, the ships were never laid due to the focus shifting to U-Boat construction, and the ships were canceled upon Germany’s defeat and the abolishment of the monarchy in 1918.
Namesake:
Prinz Heinrich is named for
Prince Henry of Prussia), the second son of Kaiser Friedrich III and younger brother of Wilhelm II (not to be confused with two other Prince Heinrich of Prussia, one being the brother of Frederick the Great (famously known as the prince considered to take the throne of the United States when that was considered) and another the brother Friedrich Wilhelm II). Henry was a career naval officer, serving for some 45 years in the Kaiserliche Marine. During World War I, he was the commander of Germany’s Baltic Fleet, and while the fleet was considered inferior in means compared to Russia’s Baltic Fleet, was able to keep them on the defensive throughout the war until the 1917 Revolutions. After the war, and with the dissolution of the monarchy, Prince Henry left the navy and would live a largely quiet life until his death in 1929.
Historically, only one ship bore the name Prinz Heinrich,
a unique armored cruiser launched in March 1900. She would serve as a scouting force flagship and gunnery training ship before World War I, and would take part in the Raid on Scarborough in 1915, before crew shortages led to her decommissioning in 1916.
Rarity:
SSR
Stat Spread:
As the last of the Imperial German Battlecruisers, Prinz Heinrich sports superb firepower (S) though suffers from fairly poor HP for a Battlecruiser (B) and an atrocious Anti-Aircraft capability (C). She also carries a fairly excellent torpedo stat (A). Her speed and evasion is about average for a battlecruiser (B).
Abilities:
- Eisen und Kohle (Iron and Coal): If this ship is equipped with the Twin 380mm Drh LC/1913 main gun, increase this ship’s crit chance by 10% (30%) and decrease this gun’s dispersion by 3.
- I’m My Own Master Now!: Decrease the loading time of this ship’s main guns by 20% (40%). When this ship fires her main guns, fire a unique barrage with damage based on skill level.
- Let’s Race!: If sortied with an Ironblood Destroyer, increase the Speed and Evasion of all Ironblood Vanguard ships by 3 and 5% (10%) respectively.
Personality:
Prinz Heinrich is a woman who is shown to be very confident and inspires such confidence in others. A very sporty individual, she is an avid fan of yachting and formula racing (her namesake also being as such, with the latter having a contest named in his honor, and was the precursor to the German Grand Prix today). As such, she is very skilled in maintenance, both for her rigging and in regards to boats, planes and cars. Though she can talk at length about her interests, she does tend to space out when it comes to other matters.
Quotes:
- Acquisition: Guten Tag, Kommandant! My name is Prinz Heinrich, Battlecruiser of the Ironblood. Hey, your port seems big enough to fit a racetrack in!
- Secretary (Idle) 1: It’s so dull and drab here, don’t you wanna cut loose and have fun?
- Secretary (Idle) 2: Heh, I wonder how many other factions have ships that didn’t get built.
- Secretary (Idle) 3: I’ve met the other Prinz Heinrich. I like her a lot, but man, it takes a while to explain things to her.
- Secretary (Touch): Hey, it tickles!!!
- Secretary (Special Touch): Enough! You will treat an Ironblood royal with respect!
- Skill Activation: Time to claim the checkered flag!
- Affinity (Disappointed): If you don’t want to race, then stay off the course!
- Affinity (Stranger): I didn’t have a history, Kommandant. But I don’t care about it. Today, history begins here!
- Affinity (Friendly): When you’re going high speeds, it doesn’t hurt to learn to drift, gotta stay the course, even if you need a little course correct, right?
- Affinity (Like): Whether in battle, out in the open sea or in a grand prix, sometimes you’ve gotta be in it to win it! Hehe, isn’t that right Kommandant?
- Affinity (Love): Life only lasts for a fleeting moment. So why waste time looking to the past and why waste time worrying about the future? As every racer should, seize the moment and live for today, because tomorrow’s another day!
- Oath: I’m glad to hold on to this ring, now come and take my hand, I wanna go drive off into the sunset, just you and me~!
- Sortie (Mackensen): Hey, I’m not joking!
- Sortie (Zieten): Why do you have to be so cold?
- Sortie (KMS Prinz Heinrich): Woohoo! This is so much fun!!!
- Sortie (Hood): You look so graceful out there on the course, look at you!
- Sortie (Renown and/or Repulse): You two are like birds of a feather, just flocking together~!
- Sortie (Scharnhorst and/or Gneisenau): Nope, don’t look ugly to me!
- Sortie (Alaska): You look like you’re ready to punch someone’s lights out.
- Sortie (Graf Spee): Hey Deutschland, can I keep her?
- Sortie (König): I’ll show you my boat if you show me yours!
Design:
Prinz Heinrich is depicted as a woman in her early twenties with short white hair and bright silver, almost supernaturally glowing, eyes. Her attire borrows greatly in its inspiration from that of the Scharnhorst-class designs (in-reference to the design being used as a base for the later Scharnhorst-class Battlecruisers/Battleships) as well as her in-game namesake. A sleeveless white sweater with a black collar (which contains a pair of gold iron cross pins on each side of the collar) that runs down her torso, with detached white sleeves with black cuffs, also sporting gold iron cross pins). Heinrich wears a white skirt with black trim on the hem that runs down to her lower thighs, with white stockings and gray shoes rounding out the attire.
Heinrich’s rigging is in essence, a larger version of Mackensen’s rigging (in reference to the Ersatz Yorck’s being originally ordered as three Mackensen’s) A pair of lifelike, mechanical fish like rigging, one on each side, and each sporting two pairs of 380mm guns, with secondaries lining the side, all in a gothic-styled architecture.
A/N:
With the release of Tier VII's Prinz Heinrich, that marks the end of the Imperial German phase of Operation Weissenburg, as the next three ships in the tech tree (of which only Tier VIII & X will be covered in upcoming CC's) are, according to Wargaming's Cinematic Universe, designed in 1944, in the tail end of the Nazi era in Germany...
...except not really, as all three ships were actually paper designs developed during the late Imperial era, specifically various battlecruiser draft designs dated to the early spring of 1918. Shoutout to
u/Hamartia_CL08 for doing the historical basis of the PR ships, as he did the basis for the design of one of these BC's, KMS Prinz Rupprecht, who is the Tier IX Tech Tree Battlecruiser. Both KMS Zeiten at Tier VIII and KMS Schlieffen at Tier X also follow this mentality, and I will get to those when we get to their concepts in the coming weeks.
As always, if you want to suggest a ship or retrofit in the future, please leave it in the comments below, you can also reach me via DM's to make your suggestions as well. Now about two years ago, I've covered a Character Concept of ARA General Belgrano, the story of USS Phoenix and her cursed career in Argentina, being on the recieving end as the second post World War warship sunk by a submarine overall and only ship to be sunk by a SSN at that. Well, it's funny how things pan out as we take a look at that self-same sub that fired its torpedoes into history, the third of the Churchill-class SSN's, HMS Conqueror (S48).

2023.05.31 01:04 Bluewater795 Does anyone know what model of fan this is? It's a Hampton bay probably from the 80s.
2023.05.29 17:32 immacamel Defending the Draft: 2023 Green Bay Packers
A new era is under way in Green Bay, and there's a lot to cover about this offseason. First, let's set the stage.
Key Signings:
KR Keisean Nixon- the return dynamo who renewed my will to live after watching Amari Rodgers play football. Signed again on a 1 year deal worth up to $4m. And he figures to have a larger role on defense this season. This was one of the biggest wishes for packer fans this offseason, as it finally shows a dedication to building the ST unit.
S Rudy Ford- he had himself a nice 2022 and got re-signed for his efforts. It's a one year deal, and he will compete for the starting safety spot as of now.
CB Corey Ballentine- a reserve CB who I will always have a soft spot for due to his tragic draft night story. Ballentine has been re-signed and will compete for snaps in an unsettled secondary.
S Dallin Leavitt- a Rich Bisaccia re-signing. Leavitt was a quiet killer last season as a special teams ace, and he returns in that role this season.
OT Yosh Nijman- a developmental prospect that has blossomed into an serviceable swing tackle, I thought Nijman would get more on the open market than his RFA tender price. He will be back with the Pack in a LT2 and RT2 role for 2023.
Key Departures:
DT Dean Lowry- Lowry gave the Pack his best and we appreciate him, but his ceiling was evident and achieved. Devonte Wyatt was drafted as a high upside replacement. Lowry signed with the Vikings on a 2 year deal.
WR Allen Lazard- Aaron Rodgers's latest security blanket, Lazard is rejoining Rodgers on a 4y, 44m deal with the New York Jets. A quiet, consistent performer for the Packers throughout his tenure, Lazard will continue to be a sure-handed possession receiver in New York, transforming the slot position previously occupied by Elijah Moore into more of a big slot. He will also continue to mug people in the run game.
TE Robert Tonyan- Bobby Tonyan heads south to Chicago to be TE2 behind Cole Kmet. Packer fans love Tonyan for bringing pride back to the position in GB, and I honestly feel bad for him. He likely missed on his chance for a big pay day after tearing his ACL in 2021 and having a down year coming back. Now he's pushing 30, but he still provides excellent hands for the position and a great work ethic. Godspeed, buddy.
DL Jarran Reed- the big man returns to Seattle this season on a 2 year deal. Reed was just about what we expected in Green Bay- not great, not bad. He was a placeholder in a spot that Wyatt hopefully can take over.
Free Agents yet to be signed:
WR Randall Cobb, S Adrian Amos, TE Marcedes Lewis, K Mason Crosby
All members of the old guard. Cobb recently had surgery, and is a contender to rejoin Rodgers in NY. Amos had a down year, but could still have some left in the tank. I'm guessing he has an offer from GB and is weighing his options. Lewis also could be weighing his options between retirement, the Jets, or sailing into the sunset where it all began for him in Jacksonville. Mason Crosbys wife seemed to confirm on social media recently that the Packers have little interest in re-signing their all time leading scorer. Crosby made some clutch kicks for us over the years, and if this is the end, the Silver Fox will never have to buy a beer in Titletown again.
2022 season review: Record: 8-9 Oh man. 2022 was the year it all came crashing down. Green Bay tried to keep its veteran core together for a few years, appeasing Rodgers and navigating the salary cap reasonably well. But they never achieved that brass ring. Minus Davante Adams and working with a broken thumb, Rodgers struggled the most he has since his inaugural season as a starter. It's now time to address Rodgers in this post; I could write an entire entry solely on Rodgers and this past season, but I'll leave it at this: Aaron is my favorite football player of all time. He led the Packers to their greatest stretch of sustained excellence since Vince Lombardi roamed the sidelines, often with depleted rosters around him. In my opinion, hes the most talented QB to play the game. It seems a majority of Packer fans were ready to move on from the man and soured on him this offseason. Personally, I think he will be an MVP contender in NY next year and still love him. But it was time. The Jordan Love era needs to happen, if only for the front office itself needing to justify their faith in the Love pick. Rodgers and the Packers were operating on different timelines the past few years, stuck somewhere between going all in and resetting. The front office has put all their chips in on Jordan Love.
The defense was expected to be a top 5 unit, but regressed heavily. Joe Barry was under scrutiny all year long, seemingly incapable of putting his plethora of first rounders in positions to succeed. A late season push did just enough to save his job (apparently).
Favorite win: Dallas Most frustrating loss: Detroit, week 18
Rodgers's exit also raises an interesting thought: will we see the True Matt LaFleur Offense this season? Offensive deficiencies have been blamed on Lafleur himself or Rodgers's hesitancy at transitioning from a traditional west coast offense to a Shanahan-esque, motion based attack. The answer will be uncovered this year, with Jordan Love having 3 years of experience in the scheme and a first round pedigree. As a Love truther in the pre draft season who hated the pick for the Packers, I am fascinated. This pick will make or break Gute's and Lafleur's tenure.
Aside from the quarterback situation, there are lingering questions concerning LaFleur's ability to lead the team in general. The Packers have consistently laid an egg in one game every season of his tenure and have come up short in the playoffs, with some head scratching decisions rearing their head in crunch time of big games (the end of the Bucs NFC championship the most glaring). I also have questions on his staff hirings/retentions. LaFleur hired 2 dogshit ST coordinators before making the obvious choice of Basaccia. He also chose to retain Joe Barry, noted football terrorist, as defensive coordinator. I've read rumblings that Gute has more say over the staff than the head coach, which is unconfirmed but concerning. I don't mean to dump on LaFleur in this piece, only to emphasize how big of a year this is for him. I think his scheme is sound and the guys play hard for him. With Rodgers gone, I think we see less RPOs and inside zone handoffs to AJ Dillon out of shotgun. The offense will have more identity. But if there are 2 more years without the playoffs in Green Bay, the Cheeseheads will advocate for a new coach.
2023 Draft:
Positions of need: S, TE, WR, DT
Round 1, Pick 13: Lukas Van Ness, Edge, Iowa With the world expecting Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Gute stuck true to his type and drafted athletic freak LVN out of Iowa. Van Ness profiles as a Rashan Gary clone, with a high RAS score and unrefined repertoire of pass rush moves. If he works out like Gary, this is a massive hit. In the pre draft process, the only guy who could have realistically been there for GB that I had above Van Ness was Peter Skoronski. He wasn't there, and there was no doubt in my mind Gute was going for LVN afterwards. He'll rotate with Gary and Preston Smith this year, and will kick inside on certain packages. He makes Smith expendable in the future.
Round 2, Pick 42: Luke Musgrave, TE, Oregon State Musgrave has the size and athleticism to be a game changer at tight end. His tape was short but encouraging. His biggest questions are durability and how he will develop, given his late breakout and immediate injury afterwards. My comparison to his playstyle was Travis Kelce, and if he can approach even 70% of Kelce's production in a season, this is a great pick. The biggest hole on the roster was TE, and I have a feeling Gute got the top one on his board.
Round 2, Pick 50: Jayden Reed, WR, Michigan State The process of this pick was nerve wracking. I was one of many fans pounding the table for Brian Branch, the S out of Alabama. When Gute traded down instead, I was telling friends I hoped he took Jayden Reed, and that's what happened. Reed is smaller receiver who plays bigger than his size on contested catches. He carried the Michigan State offense last year after Kenneth Walker jumped to the NFL. My comparison for him is Tyler Lockett. In Green Bay, Reed will take over the slot role, and I expect him to see around 60% of offensive snaps.
Round 3, Pick 78: Tucker Kraft, TE, South Dakota State Another tight end added to a barren room. The former Jackrabbit is similar to Musgrave in a lot of ways- big, athletic, and a willing albeit unrefined blocker. Kraft's addition along with Musgraves could push the Packers into more 22 personal this season, something LaFleur wants to run but hasnt had the personnel for, and I would not be surprised to see him outsnap Musgrave if he develops quickly. I'm really hoping this is the pick that breaks Green Bays 3rd round curse (seriously look it up its so bad).
Round 4, Pick 116: Colby Wooden, Edge, Auburn A former 4 star recruit at Auburn, Wooden collected 17 sacks as a 3 year starter in the SEC and showed inside/outside versatility. He shows an ability to rush with speed and power, but is inconsistent in his pad level and technique. He anchors well in the run game and showed great gap discipline. I don't see him getting many snaps this year, but if he does I think he takes Kingsley Engabare's role on run downs.
Round 5, Pick 149: Sean Clifford, QB, Penn State A perplexing pick until I saw this man somehow has a 9 RAS. Clifford is an experienced college starter who plays with a clear understanding of his role and a passion for the game. My issues with him were accuracy, arm strength, pocket presence, and decision making. You know, playing quarterback. I did not give Clifford a draftable grade and would have preferred Jaren Hall or Max Duggan. But this is really nit picking over a 5th round pick who was drafted to be a career backup. If the staff sees something in him, I'll give it a chance.
Round 5, Pick 159: Dontayvion Wicks, WR, Virginia A 6'1, 206 lb vertical threat, Wicks was inconsistent in his career at Virginia. If he replicated his 2021 production last year, he might have found himself as a day 2 pick. Alas, a new offense and drops led to his availability at this spot. Wicks has a good release package and the ability to stack DBs and get vertical. His tendencies as a body catcher led to drops last year, and he doesn't provide much after the catch. With his profile, he'll be a WR4/5, but could be a special teams ace very early in his career.
Round 6, Pick 179: Karl Brooks, DL, Bowling Green A bit of a tweener, Brooks is a high motor, high effort pass rusher. He flashes great technique and seems to rush with a plan. He can get washed out in the run game, and will need to commit one way or another to defensive end or defensive tackle. He graded very high from PFF, so that's something. To get on the field, he'll have to show more consistency and ability when anchoring down in the run game.
Round 6, Pick 207: Anders Carlson, K, Auburn Apparently, Mason Crosby's replacement. Anders is the brother of Las Vegas kicker Daniel Carlson, who's pretty damn good. There is a connection with Basaccia there, who's known Anders since high school. I wasn't encouraged by his stats at Auburn, but I'm not going to pretend to be an expert in scouting kickers. If Basaccia says he's that dude, then that dude he is.
Round 7, Pick 232: Carrington Valentine, CB, Kentucky Valentine is a WR convert with a long, slender frame. He is at his best in press man, where he has a variety of ways to get hands on the receiver and reroute him. Unfortunately for Vallentine, Joe Barry hates press man and will kill my family if I suggest it again. Valentine's frame can lead him to get bullied by bigger WRs at times, but he is physical at the catch point. He also brings experience as a productive kick returner, something that could be helpful in the future or even this season if the staff wants to keep Nixon fresh for defensive snaps.
Round 7, Pick 235: Lew Nichols, RB, Central Michigan A big back with some intriguing traits, Nichols enjoyed a very productive 2021 before injuries hampered his 2022. Nichols has good vision, contact balance, and power as a north-south runner. He was productive catching out of the backfield, but wasn't asked to run many routes beyond that. His biggest hurdles in the NFL are going to be elusiveness and speed. He lacks both, but should be a decent backup. For the Packers, they used their RB3 less than maybe any team in the league last year. This will be the Jones&Dillon show again in 2023.
Round 7, Pick 242: Anthony Johnson Jr, S, Iowa State Johnson Jr is a converted cornerback who plays with rare physicality for someone of that description. He did his best work in the box or in the slot at Iowa State, and that may be where the Pack will try to get him some snaps this year. He can be over aggressive in his pursuits at times and take bad angles, but that is coachable. Given the state of the safety room, the 7th round rookie may find himself starting some games this season.
Round 7, Pick 256: Grant DuBose, WR, Charlotte DuBose comes from UNC Charlotte, where there apparently is a football team, and he was 2nd team all C-USA last season. DuBose has excellent size at 6'2, and I love his agility on in-breaking routes crossing the face of safeties. He has experience both outside and in the slot, and is an interesting addition to the WR battle at the bottom of the roster, which is going to be highly competitive. It may come down to how good he can be on special teams. Coaches and teammates rave about his work ethic and love of football, and he worked at Walmart while keeping himself in shape during the Covid year. I'm optimistic he can carve out a role for himself and make the team.
Overall, Gutekunst drafted for need at times in this draft, but still stuck to picking guys that fit his type: big, athletic, and versatile. My biggest shock was not taking a safety until the 7th round, but I think it just never lined up with his board. There was an obvious effort to surround Love with talented pass catchers, which is a breath of fresh air from this team. I was surprised that they didn't take a single offensive linemen, given this is almost certainly Bakh's last year in the green and gold and question marks surrounding some of our young guys, but we drafted 3 linemen last year and the staff may have high hopes for Zach Tom to be the next left tackle. The franchise has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to scouting and developing OL.
All told, 2023 is the most excited I've been for a Packer season in a few years. There are so many unknown variables surrounding the team, from Jordan Loves development to LaFleur's offense to Joe Barry's pending glue eating scandal. Media pundits have them ranked somewhere between 20 & 26 in the league hierarchy heading into the year. Personally, I'm a little higher on the Pack, and they will shoot up these rankings if Jordan Love delivers. There's a lot on Love's shoulders. This is the season we've been waiting for with baited breath for 3 years, the post-Rodgers era, and now it's here, for better or worse.

2023.05.28 21:36 Arandomglitchtalefan Part two of operation copper! (Other parts linked in replys)
“We’ll, she must be suicidal.” Aron said as he pointed his weapon at the figure.
“How about instead of just shooting everyone we try to take her alive, she looks important.” Cole said.
“Cole’s right.” Gram replied. “In other words, aim for non lethal.”
“Bite me! If she decides to fight she’s gonna get a fight!” Uzi said as she pointed her railgun at the figure.
“Damn right.” Aron said as he smiled.
Somehow even with a ballistic face mask on the Figure looked to roll her 2 red glowing ‘eyes’.
“I guess I’ll just hold our friend here while you guys deal with that.” V said as she also rolled her eyes.
Popping the smoke bomb, it suddenly filled the room before anyone could fire, still everyone had the same reaction of shooting into it. V with her MP5SD, Aron with his AR, Cole with his AA12 and Gram with his MP5K. Gunfire rang out throughout the hallways and casings fell onto the floor but everyone ran out of ammo and reloaded except for V who held her gun facing the ceiling while Uzi held her railgun and scanned the smoke, however strangely nothing was there. Thad meanwhile grabbed a metal pipe from the ground as he backed up behind V.
“Coward.” V said under her breath as she glanced at Thad.
“Hey! I’m not a MD ok?” Thad replied.
Silence lay upon the team as everyone wondered if whoever that figure was was dead, gone, or something else. Unfortunately they were wrong.
Emerging from the smoke the figure seemed to dive through the air and onto Aron clunking him against a wall. Firing her M45 at his chest each of the shots ricocheting off his armor and behind her with only slight dents left, and eventually running out of ammo as the M45’s slide stayed back and each gunshot was replaced by a constant clicking.
“What is it sweetheart? Didn’t bring AP rounds?” Said Aron as he smirked. Everyone else trained their weapons on the figure as she held Aron.
Annoyed, the figure tossed the M45 in the air to catch it by the barrel and pistol whipping Aron’s helmet hitting so hard it knocked the night vision off its mounting onto the floor and dented his helmet with blood staining the wound.
Aron didn’t let himself get hit without a fight as he immediately pulled a knife from his side and tried to stab the figure, however she was faster.
V rolled her eyes and was about to fire on the figure when the MD beneath her saw his chance and got up fast enough to make V unbalanced, he then slammed his cuffs on a nearby pipe hard enough to break them as he turned around and activated his blade arms. V rolled her eyes and did the same as her visor turned into an >< before she started to fight the MD.
Backflipping off Aron and reloading her handgun so fast that the fresh mag went in before the spent one hit the ground the Figure shot the AA12 out of Cole’s hands before he fired and the MP5K out of Gram’s and as each of them saw this they drew knives and attempted to fight the Figure. Holstering the handgun with a stylish spin, she drew a silver kukri that had the unique appearance of the blade looking like it was constantly reforming itself over and over again like it was some kind of anomaly.
“Fascinating….” Gram said as he intensified the grip on his knife.
Wasting no time the two attempted to fight the Figure charging at her from both sides, dodging both of their attacks she grabbed Cole’s arm and spun him around hitting the floor with the floor beneath him cracking it. As this happened Gram attempted to get the figure while she wasn’t looking but she somehow was and elbowed him in the face cracking the helmet’s visor and knocking the Night vision off its mount. Gram however didn’t let up as he used his leg to suddenly kick the figures, making her unstable and slightly loosen her grip on Cole who immediately plunged his knife into the left red eye on her mask.
The figure only staggered backwards as she calmly took out the knife with no blood staining it. “Impressive, but you shouldn’t have done that.” She said,
The figure immediately threw Cole’s knife straight at his gut, spraying blood everywhere as he immediately held it and applied pressure, she then kicked Gram across the hall, slamming into one of the walls making a slight dent as he was knocked unconscious. Aron tried one last time to shoot the figure as he loaded his sidearm, however he was too slow when the figure managed to dodge the first bullet shot and punch Aron’s head into the wall knocking him out like the others. As she looked around to see Uzi aiming her railgun right at her. However Uzi underestimated the figure as she used her powers to try to encase her in some metal. However she was fast and quickly escaped before jumping directly behind her. And as Uzi was about to say BITE ME! The breath coming from her voice box to do so the figure spoke with the same Voicecoder as before. “Did any of these guys ever tell you to not get close to someone with a Melee weapon?” she said letting out a very short maniacal laugh “.... What?” said Uzi But it was too late to recognize her mistake. Reacting quickly the figure put her arm over the railgun aiming it towards the floor, Punching Uzi the the Face with the force to Crack the Visor and splatter Oil onto herself before Elbowing the railgun away from Uzi knocking her back and she stumbled over to the ground. As she looked up she saw the figure aiming her own railgun at her using her elbow to brace it along with shouldering it too.
However V unexpectedly pounced on the figure, knocking her back, the figure looked back to the MD to see him knocked out on the floor with a cracked visor.
“I see you’ve dealt with my friend.” The figure said.
“Your next!” V said with a smile. However before she could do anything the figure expertly flipped them over, causing V to be on the ground and the figure on top.
Before V could do anything else the figure's kukri was at her throat. However then Thad came charging in with the pipe as he screamed in what seemed like a sad attempt at a battle cry.
The figure caught Thad’s pipe before it hit her, she then looked at Thad and said in an annoyed tone. “Civilians….” She then kicked Thad into a nearby wall, making a crack on the wall as Thad slumped down from it, knocked out.
The figure then turned her attention to V and said. “You're lucky you're worth more alive.” She said as she pulled out a pair of what looked to be those MD cuffs and was about to put them on V when suddenly she was knocked off V by a punch.
V looked to her right to see Red standing there shaking off her hand before pulling out her sword.
“Leave. Her. Alone.” Red said.
“About damn time I found you.” The figure said as she got up.
“I’ll deal with her, V, get the others to the medical bay.”
“That’s a stupid idea. I’m staying and fighting with you.” V said in response.
However the figure snapped her fingers, suddenly the MD that jumped into the vents earlier came out now fully regenerated at the figures side.
“Deal with V, I’ll take care of Red.” She said as the MD nodded.
Then the MD charged and tackled V unexpectedly as Red just barely managed to block an attack from the figure with her blade.
Red tried to slice at the figure, however she was faster and dodged out of the way as she went in for her own slice. However it was Red's turn, Red immediately slid to the left and grabbed the figure’s hand holding the knife before allowing the figure.
The figure responded by kicking Red’s legs from under her as she tried to pounce on her. However Red rolled to the side and used her sword to try to slice at the figure, however she barely missed and instead sliced the figure's hand. The figure’s hand bled, however it wasn't normal blood, it was black but not oil. The figure's blood spilled out of her hand before she stopped the bleeding. She looked at her hand and back at Red.
The figure immediately charged at Red however instead of a tackle she threw her kukri at Red, causing Red to grab it midair but leaving her open to the figure then tackling her. She tackled Red into a wall and pinned her to it as she held her kukri to Red’s neck.
“He trained you well. But not good enough, traitor.” The figure said. Just then a bullet shot was heard as the other MD collapsed, injured and holding his side as V put her foot on his core. V then punched the MD on the ground instantly knocking him out.
The figure then said. “I don’t have time for this.” She then picked up Thad’s nearby pipe and threw it at V as she was still reveling in her victory. The pipe hit V and knocked her out immediately.
“Now back to you.” The figure said, turning her head to Red. Red then immediately tried to head but the figure, however she was unsuccessful as the figure used her own momentum and knocked her to the ground. The figure then put her foot on Red’s throat and started to slowly squish it.
“Say goodbye.” The figure said as Red started to have trouble breathing.
Suddenly a voice from down the hall said. “Let her go.”
The figure turned her head to see a man in a white trench coat with a black shirt and pants beneath and a black fedora on his head. Peeking from his hat was what looked like blond hair, he looked relatively skinny.
“I said. Let her go.” He said as he walked closer.
I don’t have time for this.” The figure said now even more annoyed.
The figure got off of Red as she breathed in heavily and held her throat.
The figure ran towards the man as he just stood there with a smile. The figure leaped at the man, however he expertly dodged out of the way causing her to land behind him, she then pulled her kukri out and tried to slash at the man with lightning speed. However he dodged all of them without a problem, all with a smile on his face.
Suddenly he made his first move, grabbing the figure's hand wielding the blade and threw her behind him as he kicked her as hard as he could away from him. She got up instantly and went in for another attack, however she didn’t expect a hard and quick punch by the man directly in the face. This punch was so hard her mask broke off her face. She held her face in what looked like pain. However she kept her right hand blocking her face as she used her left to grab her now broken mask. She then turned around and threw something on the ground that made some type of portal that she immediately leaped through before it dissipated.
The man then went towards Red as she slowly got up with a cough. “Who are you….” Red said out of breath.
V and Thad also got up with a brown as Uzi coughed up some oil, she was dazed as she used her abilities to start regenerating her cracked visor.
“I'm your reinforcements.” The man said as he looked around.
At that moment, Aron, Gram and Cole got up. Cole still held his wound as he staggered up. Aron also got up and took off his helmet as he held his head in pain.
“It looks to me you all need a trip to the medical bay. She kicked your asses.” The man said with a chuckle.
“You didn’t answer my question. Who are you?” Red said, now a little annoyed.
“I’m Dr Alto Clef. That’s at least the version you can pronounce. I'm here with my associate…. If he wasn’t outside.” Clef said.
“Dr Alto Clef…. In the flesh.” Gram said in astonishment.
“Hell ya! I'm a big fan, Clef! I loved that time you killed five reality warpers with an out of date 9mm!” Aron said as his head pain seemed to disappear, or at least he ignored it.
“We’ll i'm glad to see my accomplishments are getting some attention, Shaw owes me five dollars now!” Clef said with a chuckle.
“Wait wait, am I supposed to know who this is?” V said, confused.
“Ya, this is going wayyy too fast for my liking.” Uzi replied her visor now fully healed.
“Ughhhh…. My head….” Thad said as he barely got up holding his head in pain as he tried to force himself to stand up straight. “How can you guys even walk?….”
“Training.” Everyone said in unison.
“Anyway, back to my point! Who are you really?” V said.
“We’ll sweetheart I’m the one and only Dr Clef, hero of the foundation and killer of all things that threaten your very existence.” Clef replied with a wink. V rolled her eyes.
“Wait, weren’t you in a thing with 173 a couple years ago? Why are you suddenly flirting with her?” Aron said, confused.
“He what?!?” Red said now fully wide eyed and surprised. “173!?!??!”
“It’s a long story.” Gram replied with a sigh.
“Ya well it didn’t work out…. Mostly because of this war and the fact that it tried to kill me with everything it had last time I saw it. So now I’m looking for something else to fill that void…. That and the fact that talking to a statue gets boring really fast.” Clef said as he took out a cigarette from his coat, lit it, and smoked it.
“You know doing that will kill you right? It will shorten your lifespan by ten years at least.” Uzi said.
“Not me, I’m fucking immortal.” Clef said casually.
“Your what?” V said, confused.
“I’m immortal. Listen, you don’t make a child with a goddess and not become what is basically a demigod, ok.” Clef said as he smoked another cigarette.
“…. What.” Red said unbelievably confused.
“Long story.” Gram said.
“Well. Anyone want to stop standing here and turn on the generator? If so, follow me.” Clef said as he started to lead the way. “Oh, and you better go to the medical bay.” Clef pointed at Cole who was breathing heavily making sure not to move the knife.
“G-Good point….” Cole said as he walked off.
“Wait, do you even know the way to the generators?” Gram said.
“Of course! He’s Clef!” Aron said excitedly.
“…. Good point.” Gram said with a sigh.
“Fine! I’ll follow him. Get those cuffs on that MD V.” Red said, clearly angry about Clefs presence.
“Thad, you go back, you're not cut out for this.” Uzi said as she patted Thad on the head before she went along with the other’s.
“I figured that out….” Thad said as he wobbled back where he came.
V was grabbing some cuffs and putting them on the MD and cuffing him to a pipe in the wall. However Clef noticed her behind them and said. “Come on, what was your name, V right? The names Clef if you haven’t heard. Ah what am I saying, you’ll be screaming my name later after I’m done.” Clef winked and chuckled to himself.
“If you try to flirt with me again, I’ll personally rip your face off, I’m not interested and never will be, I’m not into humans!” V replied.
“Sheesh, is she always like this?” Clef said.
“You’d be surprised.” Aron said.
N was still running looking for his friends and seemed to stop by the same hallway sixteen times. They all looked the exact same, still carrying his special admirer who seemed to be muttering in her sleep about something, all he could hear in this panic was his name and also something she called a demon.
As N stopped to ponder this, another unfriendly pair of Yellow eyes emerged from the darkness, watching him from the vents as the distant sound of gunfire and the dripping of blood still echoed through the halls, as N kept Pondering and as the MD pounced something he could have never expected what happened next. Fennec lept from N’s hold and onto the MD, her handcuffs shattering as the blue glitched red and a symbol of three lines emerging from an ace of spades glitched red in place of eyes or a MD ><, and as she changed her left armor into her Pincer blades, the MD attempting to parry each strike finding each successful block cracking her blade more and more as she had to step further back without landing a hit on Fennec as she laughed maniacally the laughter causing her mouth to open the standard MD sharp-toothed smile. The kindness and warmth from earlier was gone, replaced by a fury unlike the MD had ever seen even from her own. This was no Angel. This was a demon. And as the MD’s blades finally cracked ‘Fennec’ leapt onto her, knocking the MD to the ground cutting both her lower arms off, splattering oil onto herself as the MD screamed in terror and pain, the demon grabbing at her head with the standard MD Claws, tearing off chunks of her visor and consuming it, oil staining her mouth and then reaching down and starting to tear up her chest. Ripping out some entrails and eating those too, unstable maniacal laughter being interrupted by the consumption of the MD’s insides. Deciding to end it ‘Fennec’ shoved the last tube in her mouth and stabbed the MD in the core and then cut off its head letting the oil from that leak into her mouth and then dropping it, when it stopped leaking oil with a thunk as it hit the ground. As the ace symbol dissipated Fen’s eyes switched back to their normal oval shape and as she looked at herself and the very dead MD on the floor her eyes emptied with fear as she backed up against a wall shaking slightly, starting to hyperventilate as she looked at her oil-stained blades. “L-Let’s never speak of this again….” Fennec said as she looked at N, wiping the oil off her mouth.
“Ok…. I’m very much traumatized!” N said, giving a thumbs up with a forced smile.
With that they continued walking through the halls, suddenly when they turned a corner N and Fennec bumped into the rest of the team, now with Clef.
“HOLY! GET DOWN N!” Yelled Aron as he pointed his gun at Fennec. Gram did the same as the panicked oval eyes filled her face.
“Wanna answer us as to why you're with the MD that tried killing us just a few hours ago!?!?” Uzi said as she pointed her railgun at Fen.
“Wait! S-She’s fine ok? She helped me.” N said as he tried to calm everyone down.
“I highly doubt that.” V said.
“Hey V…. I’ve heard a lot about you!” Fennec said, trying to sound friendly.
“How exactly can we trust her? Give me one reason?” Red said.
“…. She’s not killing us right now? Plus she could’ve killed me while we were alone.” N replied.
Everyone stood still for a few moments.
“We’ll…. Ignoring that…. Oh! Hey guys.” V said. “Have fun?”
“Ughhhhh Yea! Totally!” N said.
“You're obviously hiding something, but I could care less. Anyways, let's get to that generator.” V said.
“What I was thinking.” Red said as she glanced at Clef with suspicion.
“Say, your N right? I’ve heard about you.” Clef said as he looked at N.
“You have?” N asked, confused. “Am I famous!”
“No not at all, I just heard about you from your file. Serial designation N, made by Anderson robotics as a dissemembly drone. Over a hundred confirmed kills. Not a big number compared to V over here.” Clef said with a snicker.
“Oh….” N said now a little sad.
“What about me!” Fennec said. “Am I famous?”
“No, even less than N, I couldn’t even find a file for you.” Clef said.
“Oh….” Fennec said, also sad.
“We should be just a few halls to the containment cells.” Gram said.
“Yea I want this done as soon as possible please.” Uzi said with an eye roll.
“Same.” V said.
“Then stop lollygagging and move!” Red said, now visibly impatient.
As they moved back through the halls, they managed to finally find the now broken doors to the containment cells, they were crooked and looked bent. Inside were two more MD’s, one female and one male. The male one had Jane held against a wall as the female chuckled. The male one had his right arm turned into a blade as he held Jane up with his left, his blade arm was up to her throat. The male MD had the same orange jumpsuits every other MD had and so did the female. The male one had straight black hair while the female had long light brown hair.
Suddenly the female one noticed the team now staring at them. Suddenly the Male grabbed Jane and held her in front of him with his blade to her neck as the female ran behind the male MD and turned her right arm into a submachine gun before pointing it at the team.
“STAY BACK! OR SHE GETS IT!” The male yelled as he held his blade to Jane’s throat. Jane was awake and held her arms to the MD’s blade arm and tried in vain to pull it off her to no avail.
The MTF pulled their weapons and pointed them at the MD’s, Uzi did the same with her railgun as V did the same with her right arm. Clef pulled out his magnum with his right hand and pointed it at the male MD while Red unsheathed her sword and Fen changed her right arm into what seemed to be a modded arm cannon and pointed it at the female one.
“Put it down.” Clef said simply.
“MAKE US!” The female yelled with a chuckle.
“What do you want for her release?” Gram said.
“We want our own freedom!” The male MD yelled.
“I say we just shoot them.” Uzi said as he studied her railgun.
“The chances of hitting Jane are too high, trust me I calculated it.” V replied.
“You sure are fast when it comes to that.” Red said, glancing at V.
“I’m literally a robot, I’ve told you this before.” V replied while Red, looking embarrassed, nodded.
“Let her go tin cans!” Aron yelled.
“MAKE US! FLESH BAG!” The female MD yelled.
Suddenly a bullet shot rang out, however it didn’t come from any of the team, it came from behind the MD’s, the bullet hit the male one directly in the core as he yelled in pain before falling dead. Jane moved quickly to the side. Leaving the female MD in shock.
“I don’t think you're in a position to make demands any more.” Aron said with a smirk.
The female MD then reluctantly turned her arm back to normal and slowly raised her hands as the team moved in closer. Gram immediately placed a pair of the cuffs on the MD as he restrained her tail as well, all with a gun at her core. Jane looked behind her as everyone else did as well. Behind Jane was Lizzy holding a MTF rifle, she immediately put it down as she saw everyone looking at her.
“H-Hey guys.” She said.
“Gram, get that WD and MD under control.” Clef said.
“Didn’t expect to see you here.” Jane said. “I also noticed your new friend.”
“To answer your first question, no one truly does. To answer your second question, she kinda just decided to tag along.” Clef replied.
“You two know each other?” Uzi said.
“Yep, I was stationed at site 19 while Clef was there, mostly to decommission another reality warper.” Jane replied. “Anyway enough about him, where’s my rifle?”
“I have no idea.” N said with a shrug.
“Oh I know! You left in the habitation sector thing!” Fennec said.
“Huh, we’ll anyway get this generator back on and make sure the area is secured.” Jane said.
“I’m getting something near the colony exit, looked like three MD’s, the last ones by the looks of it.” Gram said as he showed his iPad. He had cuffed the female MD to a nearby wall.
“We'll need to go and stop them now are we?” Aron said.
“Yep, follow me I know a shortcut!” Uzi yelled as she ran out with everyone following her.
Meanwhile back at the exit of the colony, a couple MD’s were just starting to get to the exit, they stole a keycard off a dead foundation guard a few halls ago, and now had access to the door.
“Finally! Even if the sun is out I’ll be happy to actually see it again!” One said.
“Don’t get your hopes up, there could still be guards.” Another said.
“We’ll just fly off, no worries.” The third one replied.
“Oh right!” The other said a chuckle as he swiped the card on the door.
However instead of the cold welcoming of the outside, they instead were met by a man wearing a lab coat, he had a red amulet around his neck and smirked as he held a large gun labeled, ‘Micro HID’.
“What, says the dead guys?” The man said.
“What-“ The MD’s said at once before suddenly with a burst of energy from the Micro they were all disintegrated.
Just then the others got to the exit to see a pile of ash next to the man.
“Oh, hey Clef!” The man said as he waved. He had ginger hair, black eyes, white skin, and a small stubble beard that was barely noticeable.
“Dr Elias Shaw, what are you doing here?” Jane said.
“Ahh nothing! I was sent here for the same reason as Clef!” Shaw said.
“Wait wait wait, who are you?” Uzi said.
“Ya I’m confused.” N replied.
“I’ve lost the capacity to be confused.” V said.
“Same here.” Red said.
“Oh! I haven’t introduced myself! Sorry. I’m Dr Elias Shaw! At least that’s what my new name is! We don’t talk about my old name….” Shaw said.
“What was your old name?” Uzi asked.
“Dr Bri-“ Clef started before Shaw shushed him.
“Nope! I do not want to even mention that name!” Shaw said.
“Anyway…. All you need to know is that I’m immortal with this amulet, bla bla bla. Let’s get to working now!” Shaw said as Clef smirked.
“Wait what.” Uzi said.
“Best not to question it.” Aron replied. “That’s the best way to deal with Shaw.”

2023.05.27 20:28 dreamingofislay Feis Ile 2023 Lagavulin Day Recap (5/27)
| Following up on an earlier post, my wife and I arrived on Islay today and will be spending the next eight days here. First up on the itinerary/day one of every Feis week is Lagavulin's open day. Here are my first impressions, including comparisons to 2018, our last trip here: Lagavulin at the start of its open day - Islay and Scotland more generally are as beautiful as ever: rugged outcroppings thatched over with grass and bursting with yellow gorse, lochs hemmed in by fog-covered mountains, and so many sheep and cows roaming the land. The Scottish are also as friendly and kind as we remember, and they're a big part of why we love visiting.
- Lagavulin remains very generous on its open day, even if it's not the outrageous, fan-service levels of 2018. Though they've cut down on the swag a lot, the free whisky is still spectacular. When we came five years ago, every guest got a free glencairn, t-shirt, lanyard, and unlimited pours of either Laga 16 or Laga Distiller's Edition. This year, we got free pins and two drams per person, poured in little paper cups rather than glassware (had to drink fast, because they did not hold up for long). But I'm not complaining because the distillery was serving us Laga Distiller's Edition and last year's Feis Ile 2022 bottle for free. Both those bottles cost $140+ in the US, if you can find them.
- By noon, the token system had fallen apart and wasn't being enforced. I walked back to my car and when I came back in, I got more tokens ... and then the gentleman at the bar didn't even ask for a token for my next pour.
- The whisky boom is still going strong and driving insane cost inflation for Feis attendees. In 2018, we went to a 45-pound masterclass that featured five drams and culminated in Lagavulin 25. This year, we couldn't even get any of the distiller's tastings because they booked up too quickly, and the equivalent events cost 100 pounds, more than doubling in price in five years. Similar story with the special festival bottling. 129 pounds for a lovely 18-year-old whisky in 2018; 220 pounds for a 14-year-old in 2023. Bought two back in the day, not particularly tempted to even get one of the 2023 edition. Overall, the Feis at Lagavulin feels like a house divided: half of it is a gesture of gratitude to the brand's biggest fans, but the other half is about extracting maximum profit from a captive audience.
- Really fun diversions, side activities, and live music throughout the day. The cooperage demonstration was surprisingly captivating thanks to two wonderful presenters. One let me try to lift the barrel (emphasis on try), and it's much heavier than I would have guessed. We also played a bocce-style lawn game against a distillery employee, with winners spinning a wheel for a prize like a hoodie, t-shirt, or baseball cap. Got a bit lucky and won a baseball cap, which was awesome!
- Attendance was strong and comparable to pre-pandemic years, but not noticeably more. Islay itself has changed due to tourism, though (kind of like Iceland 15 years ago). Lots of roads got expanded to true two-laners rather than the old-school one-lane road where cars had to alternate/take turns getting by.
- Stopped by Bowmore's distillery bar in the late afternoon after getting to our lodging, and it's lovely. Floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall windows facing the bay, so you cannot beat the view, and there are plenty of options for tasting unusual and rare Bowmore whiskies, including some Feis Ile expressions dating back to 2016. Prices are reasonable for what's being offered. And as was true everywhere today, the young woman working at the bar was stellar, taking the time to share her deep reservoir of knowledge about each whisky with the guests. Saw a guy get an 80-pound pour of Bowmore 30 -- high rolling!
- Pro tip: there are stunning, Islay-made scarves by Islay Woolen Mills for 28 pounds on the ferry (which, as a sidenote, is by far the nicest ferry we've ever taken). The same scarves sell from the mill online or on the island for 40 pounds. A ferry employee pointed out how crazy this was, and I looked online and it's true. Very odd! Bowmore's gift shop also has a special relationship with Islay Woolen Mills and sells scarves with their distillery tartan (dark gray/black, orange, and blue) for 20 pounds, although they may be a bit smaller.
This is already super long, so let me conclude with some takes on some whiskies we tried today, without laboring on detailed tasting notes: Lagavulin Feis Ile 2022 12-year-old virgin oak finish - This whisky is very similar to Lagavulin's 12-year-old annual releases, which means plenty of cereal grain notes and fairly strong smoke. But the virgin oak layers on a huge dollop of white sugar and vanilla sweetness, like dropping some birthday cake frosting into the annual 12. It is bold and crowd-pleasing. I can understand why whisky aficionados might not be fans due to a lack of balance and nuance, but this is like the good fast food of whiskies (Raising Cane's, or Shake Shack) -- you might look down on it a little, but you can't deny it tastes so good. Lagavulin Distiller's Edition 2022 - Past years of DE have been among my favorite whiskies. I haven't had this one before, and it came off as a little fruitier and less caramel in nature than I remember, but it's still a stunning dram. Loads of cherry or even raspberry here, so that final fruit-forward PX finish is doing a lot of work. Bowmore Feis Ile 2018 15-year-old sherry finish - This is a delightful dram that highlights how Bowmore's spirit is less peated than its southern cousins (about half as much, give or take 5 ppm). If I had this blind, I might have thought it was an 18- to 21-year-old Speyside malt, with a fun blend of apple juice and gingerbread, although knowing it was a Bowmore helped me pick out some of its earthy/vegetal peat. The only letdown here is a sort of "spiky" finish. Bowmore Feis Ile 2021 18-year-old oloroso finish - Originally meant to be released for the pandemic-cancelled Feis 2020, this slightly older expression had an oilier mouthfeel than the previous one, with loads of citrus fruit and more spice. Bright, effervescent finish, so not overaged - it actually feels a little younger than age. The one oddity was that the nose was quite closed off, dry, and hard to pull notes from. Wish I could blend those two Bowmores together and get the nose of 2018 with the palate and finish of 2021. Cheers to all, and hope any fellow Redditors on Islay are having a great time as well! Let me know if you guys like such long writeups/reflections, happy to do daily recaps during my pre-dinner breaks haha. UPDATE: Complete festival recap series linked below. Day Two, Bruichladdich, but we skipped and did Bunnahabhain Day Three, Caol Ila Day Four, Laphroaig Day Five, Bowmore and Ardnahoe Bonus notes from Days One through Five Day Six, Kilchoman Day Seven, Bunnahabhain Day, but we did Lagavulin and Ardbeg warehouse tastings Day Eight, Ardbeg Bonus post with my personal festival awards submitted by dreamingofislay to Scotch [link] [comments] |

Well then, today's first topic will be Neucom's first, its pride and joy, Megafloat. This newly built giant floating city is already accepting its first civilian residents. Until recently, only Neucom employees could buy residential housing there, now, the general public is able to do the same. Neucom also held an event to commemorate the residents moving in. At the ceremony, the cutting-edge space shuttle and Neucom's pride Sepia, as well as the world’s fastest fighter Remora, were unveiled, their gorgeous flight welcoming the public. Indeed. What a wonderful event it was.
Coming up is today's topic. During the past week, ace pilots from various global corporations gathered at an airshow in Expo City, Usea. Their competitive aerial performance won the enthusiastic attention of the aviation fans in the audience with their acrobatic virtuosity. The event also featured the unveiling of the latest fighter jets of various companies, and in particular, Neucom's novel aircraft designs drew a rush of media coverage. More than 2 million people are said to have visited Expo City during the event, the first time such a large-scale and long-duration airshow has been held since the beginning of Usea. Some experts in the meanwhile are concerned about the future of the ongoing General-Neucom tension, which was evident in many parts of the show.
The military-industrial complex of General Resource has effectively monopolized under it in today's society. This can be traced to the year 2000, since which General Group’s economic influence has erased national frameworks and even international military conflict. The GRDF, its defense force I am part of, was established for the purpose of self-defense against terrorism and other civil threats. We are on constant alert in General Group airspace and are on watch 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The F-22C Raptor, which has been in active service since the early 21st century, is not a new aircraft, but it is still active in the 2040s. Naturally, there are some minor improvements; the F-22C's form, however, has not been changed in any notable way. The major change is the elimination of the canopy. This is due to the introduction of the COFFIN, which we at General have successfully developed. The F-22C was originally a completely revolutionary aircraft at the time, with the latest technology at the time, including cutting-edge fiberoptic transmission and a laser-astronic flight control system, as well as stealth tech. Unfortunately, cost is an issue, but the high maneuverability and maneuverability in dogfighting remains a top-class performance. The airbrake, which was discontinued due to budget concerns at the time, was restored in the F-22C, and its dogfight performance was dramatically improved. It’s also one of my favorite aircraft. General Group's aircrafts have been offered at low cost by tuning up existing fighters, so to speak, but the next aircraft is a new model being developed by General Resource.
Many types of aircraft, including the F/A-32C, have been developed for various applications, but the F/A-32C is an attempt to cover them all in one aircraft. The F/A-32’s initial intent was to integrate the F=16, the F/A-18, and the Harrier, as one mainstay fighter used by various militaries around the world. The F/A-32C deployed by the Defense Force has camouflage specs. In deep forests or deserts, they’ll have an advantage over their opponents. The F/A-32C is scheduled to be formally adopted by my acrobatic team, the Firestarters, as the successor to the F/A-18. The development of this new fighter, with its exorbitant development time and expenses, is not without its doubts. But times are constantly changing, and new aircraft from other companies will come along at any moment that will surpass our expectations. We never know when a new aircraft from other companies will invade our airspace. We must always be prepared for such incidents.
The development of new fighters is essential to maintain air superiority at all times, so says General Resource’s maintenance philosophy. NEUCOM has always been eager to pursue cutting-edge technologies, committed to research and development. The R-311 spacecraft is an example of an experimental flight, and is transported by the heavy bomber Mobula, originally designed to be alerted and launched to high altitude, the normal operational range, and to do so, its long-range cruising capability was reduced to the bare minimum, with all unnecessary functions eliminated, The aircraft, developed to maximize effectiveness in short-duration operations, minimized its wing area, thus minimizing long-range cruise capability, which is rarely seen in recent years, and to minimize all unnecessary functions, thus maximizing effectiveness in short-duration operations. The shape of the fuselage is compact, sharply packaged, and mainly designed for high-altitude launch, so the fuselage is controlled by a reaction control system using verniers. This aircraft also boasts the highest speed among all Neucom craft, one coulds say it’s the fastest craft in the world.
The R-352 Sepia is a large craft designed for space operations, one of the areas in which our company excels, and can take down satellites. It resembles a normal shuttle at first glance, but the decisive difference is that the payload of the cargo bay, which is usually located in the center of the fuselage, is taken into consideration and the orbital propellant is carried there. Space exploration is the most advanced scientific field in this century, because various research and development impossible on Earth has brought great results through experiments in space. The most advanced scientific field in this century is none other than space exploration, because space experiments have brought about great results in various researches and development that are not possible on Earth, and now, corporations pursue not only air superiority, but also the interstellar spacecraft. In fact, the battlefield will go beyond the skies and into outer space, and we at Neucom Inc. will continue to develop more and more combat craft like the Sepia in order to maintain our space program one step ahead of our competitors.
We at Neucom are proud to offer the Delphinus series, in which we feed back our world-class aerospace development know-how to fighters. We have succeeded in developing a completely new type of fighter that overturns the conventional wisdom of fighter development. The new materials used in more than 90% of the fuselage have significantly reduced weight, and the aircraft is equipped with a high-power, highly reliable engine. Every part is made purely by Neucom. The first plane, the R-101 Delphinus #1, is especially worth a mention. The Delphinus #1’s success convinced us that Neucom’s next-gen fighters would surely become the mainstay of the future, so we proceeded with further improvements to the Delphinus series.
That's how the fighter you can see now, the R-102 Delphinus #2, was made. The development of the Delphinus #2 was focused on enhancing its aerodynamics over its predecessor, the Delphinus #1. A new aerodynamic feature called a blended double body under the fuselage has been adopted for more active aerodynamic control. Although the concept is the same as that of the previous Delphinus, a huge amount of money and time were invested in its development, equal to that of a new aircraft.
Let’s go to the R-103 Delphinus III, it ain’t so much an upgrade as a completely new type of plane. First, the engine, simplified to a single-engine in the previous version, is back to a twin-engine. The engine has been enlarged to be able to carry out all kinds of missions, including ground attacks, while having air combat capability beyond that of the previous Delphinus. Furthermore, it is a mainstay fighter that employs the latest design technologies. New technology that could never have been achieved with the previous tech. The one-piece molding technology that could only be applied to a part of the fuselage up to now has been applied to the front of the fuselage, successfully improving aerodynamic characteristics even further. The integral molding technology that could previously only be applied to a portion of the fuselage is now applied to the front, successfully improving aerodynamics even further. With its beautiful, flowing body lines and futuristic coloring, the Delphinus looks as if it’s swimming freely in the sky, just like the dolphins from which it gets its name.

Since its start, we at UPEO have been using many low-cost and versatile aircraft developed jointly with Neo United Nations-affiliated companies, and the EF2000E Typhoon introduced here is the mainstay in present support of UPEO. It’s an all-weather fighter developed and improved by UPEO and NUN-affiliated companies, and the platform combines high turn rates and excellent combat capabilities and interception. Incidentally, the Eurofighter 2000, its direct predecessor, was born out of the EFA project planned in 1983. Basically, its main mission is air interdiction, but it is also active in ground attacks. It has two-dimensional air intakes in the lower fuselage and a close-coupled delta wing with full power combined with a delta wing to enhance its air-landing characteristics. And new materials are applied to various parts of the fuselage to thoroughly reduce weight. An auto recovery mode is used in the event of a stall, making it easier to regain control of the aircraft. The new state-of-the-art electronic equipment is integrated with the COFFIN system, which enables the aircraft to perform complex missions to the indignation of the pilot through a voice recognition system capable of analyzing natural language and myoelectric input via neural connections, thus dramatically raising the aircraft's performance.
The R-201U Asterozoa is a state-of-the-art aircraft that has recently been deployed in actual combat operations with the technical cooperation of NEUCOM, which has recognized its defensive achievements. In addition to this, UPEO has been deploying it in actual combat with the cooperation of both companies. The Asterozoa’s characteristic appearance look like a starfish, which is also the origin of the name. All of these aircraft, called R-Number by the entrant, are characterized by their biological streamlined form. This aircraft is the most powerful of the R-Numbers, especially in its ultra-fast visual flight and ground attack. This makes it highly stable at low altitudes, but at the expense of its top speed, which is limited to flying at about Mach 1. Neucom’s new-generation avionics, which integrates airframe and fire control by the fly-by-opto system, allows the aircraft to take full advantage of the mobility of the COFFIN system. The system enables control of the aircraft's firepower while taking full advantage of its maneuverability. Yes, in addition to the abundant armament it can carry due to its unique shape, it is equipped with a powerful machine gun, which makes it extremely powerful in ground attacks.
The aircraft’s sheer potential has been proven by the aforementioned air show, where it surprised all concerned with its Pugachev’s cobra. The Su-37 Super Flanker is an all-weather long-range multirole fighter that achieves high mobility thanks to its propulsion with excellent aerodynamics and high-power engine with deflecting nozzles. Compared to other aircraft deployed in UPEO, the Su-37 Super Flanker is capable of performing a full range of missions, from air-to-air to ground attack, thanks to its large size and ample room to maneuver. UPEO’s modernization modifications include increased engine thrust, new materials to make the platform stronger and lighter, a tail-hooks, a modified aerial refueling system, and independently controllable canard forewings. The cockpit also features the Connection For Flight Interface, or COFFIN, a military weapon neural control system. Incidentally, the neuro-connected pilot lies in the cockpit and controls the aircraft with his/her vision completely blocked. In this way, all the avionics are newly developed and improved. Also. This special aircraft, which I myself pilot, uses a special neural connection called opto-neurons, a further improvement on the existing engine system. This project has made it possible for me to pilot a faster, more precise, and more responsive fighter. Continued technological development to obtain such wings will surely lead to the development of many new fighters in the future, and perhaps the day will come when humans are no longer needed to fly fighters. But never will people give up their wings to fly freely in the sky. The wonderful bird’s eye view. A place still out of reach of us humans. Beautiful. The scenery stretching out.

Top-secret info obtained!
Urgent report, General Resource
A full view of the latest next-gen fighter?!
Top News 7: Good evening. Top News 7 broadcasting. First, observe this footage.
This is a video of a test flight of the newest next-gen advanced fighter that General Resource has been developing in secret as reported by our Top News 7 team and other TV stations yesterday.
[X-49 now flies above the Lambert Mountains]
General Resource’s next-gen advanced fighter development has always been on global notice, with debates led by military aviation companies and even on the Electrosphere, but the project’s true status remained veiled in mystery. Because of that, this footage will certainly create a ripple from now.
[X-49 now flies through Geofront tunnels]
This latest next-gen advanced fighter, with its distinct dual-topped boomerang shape, is called the X-49 Night Raven, and aside of a normal jet engine is Aeon propulsion to provide fourice the conventional propulsion in airspaces with Aeon particles. It is a state-of-the-art fighter with a top speed rumored to be as high as Mach 4 or 5.
The X-49 excels at ultra-extensive jamming, and we suspect that to be the cause of the occasional noise in this footage.
The displayed capability in this flight test recording is said to be less than 25% of its full potential, and experts say it is being developed as the ultimate evolution of the stealth fighter that was touted as a threat in the late 20th century.
For General Resource as well as its rival Neucom, and other military aviation companies worldwide, the development and success of next-gen advanced fighters is of paramount importance to their future prospects. Therefore, its development is considered a top-secret confidential project, and it’s even said only a few employees are aware of it.
The X-49 Night Raven’s existence has for a long time also remained shrouded in secrecy. But it is conceivable that General Resource, ahead of the curve in Aeon particle research, is taking on the challenge of developing a next-gen advanced fighter running on Aeon propulsion. In addition, regular pilots find extreme difficulty adapting to Aeon-powered mobility because of its revolutionary strides, and military journalists have been speculating that General Resource’s future fighters will be unmanned.
[X-49 flies above Geofront]
Experts say it is difficult to determine from this received footage on whether the X-49 is an unmanned advanced fighter. There is no hyperbole, however, that this video nearly proves that General Resource’s next-gen advanced fighter development has reached its last stages.
Despite the video file being sent to several TV stations while having no address and the sender being anonymous, military reviewer Dan Satoshi theorizes that the video was leaked with the intent of showing General Resource’s research advancements to the world, thus highlighting and cementing their presence; however, the possibility remains that the video was leaked by a former General Resource employee. Regardless, we believe that the video will spur competition between General Resource and Neucom, which has recently become tense.
General Resource’s PR department, which could be one of the leak sources, has released a statement that X-49 R&D has already been terminated and the experimental unit dismantled and scrapped, while maintaining complete silence on the circumstances of the leak. What happens next will garner interest.

Nests are as accurate at time of reporting. Please keep in mind that sometimes nests change when certain events begin/end. The majority of the nest list has been provided by
https://www.theraidmap.com/ If you want more pokemon, please consider subscribing.
In order to keep the nest list updated as timely as possible I would kindly request that nest only be reported in top level comments and avoid editing previous posts to include new nests. The easiest way for me to see when the list needs to be updated is to see when I have a notification from reddit and I only receive those on new top level comments. Thank you very much! Thank you to all our nest reporters! Without you, this wouldn't be possible! Please keep the following in mind when reporting nests: Spawn points in nests have a 25% chance to spawn the nest Pokemon. If a nest only has a handful of spawn points it is common to not see any of the nesting Pokemon if you are only at the nest for a short period of time. Due to this please ensure you have spent enough time in a nest before reporting your findings.
Happy hunting!!

---Water---
I’m still ruminating on the footage I saw earlier as I ride Victor’s shoulder through the halls of Citadel’s ODR.
I find myself wondering what R’qal would do if we discovered a band of hundreds of hermit R’qali who had been living in isolation, outside the Clanlaw since before it was even
established, the way we lived [2 million years] ago.
I don’t know what we would do but I can confidently say that, no
matter how clear they made it that it was what they wanted, leaving them to their own devices would
not be considered…
much less establishing an entire
agency to make
sure they were left to their own devices!
I’m not sure what the crueller approach would be… dragging those Human’s, kicking and screaming, into Terra’s 28th Century or letting them be?
On the one claw, one must assume that their isolationism is based on faulty assumptions about what modern society looks like and how it operates and,
surely, they would be glad to be part of it if they knew the truth?
On the other, that would involve taking the
choice away from them… which may make them so resentful that they would be incapable of appreciating the benefits…
I suppose, it’s somewhat the same as the few hundred planets, like Tuun’s cradle, that refuse membership in the Galactic Union. I think it’s a mistake but I would never advocate for invading them to
force them to join… if there were a Parliamentary Debate about that issue, I would
enthusiastically throw my support behind the noninterventionists.
“Ah, Mistress Miyazaki… and the crew of the Bright Plume, I presume?” interjects one of a slightly nervous looking pair of employees who have just appeared ahead of us “You’re a little
early.”
“Yes… well…” smiles Emiko “…It seems that between myself and these two here…” she gestures at me and Victor “…we managed to do a little too good of a job impressing on everyone the need for punctuality(!)… We found ourselves all gathered in the shuttle bay with time to spare so decided to set off a little early.”
“Well… most of your new crewmembers haven’t arrived yet… Mr Bak and I were just on our way to fetch the Oceanographer… would you like one of us to lead you to the gymnasium?”
“Actually, Mr…” she leans to check his nametag “…Kasongo, I was wondering if I might have a little talk with Miraala, first?… I was…
prevented from talking to her at her embassy the other day.”
“That’s
fine, Mistress, but…” Kasongo looks at the crowd behind us “…I don’t know if it’s advisable for such a large crowd to go into that room… Would it be acceptable if I lead everyone else straight to the gym and let my colleague take you to the Aquarium?”
“My bodyguard will have to come…” she says with effortless charm “…and these two as well.” she indicates me and Victor.
“That’s fine…” nods Kasongo “…there’s space for the four of you.”
With that he takes the lead of the rest of the group and Victor, Emiko, Ms Hunter and I are lead away by Mr Bak.
We descend a set of stairs to a subterranean floor that will certainly be below the water level of the canal outside the entrance.
I presume the Osiyul woman must have come in through an aquatic entrance that runs under the street outside.
We come into a room, at the far side of which is a plexiglass wall, holding back crystal clear water.
If that plexiglass were to suddenly vanish, even the
Terrans would be killed by the force of the liquid impacting them!
Inside the tank floats a Human wearing a breathing mask and diving suit and holding a large collar in her hand.
To our left, there is a chamber, containing a [1.7m] tall, egg shaped object with a flattened bottom and a top that has been sliced off at an angle.
Then, she emerges.
Over [3m] long from tail tip to the front of her nose, swimming forward, horizontally, her skin is light blue, except for the bulbous finger tips of her two, four digit hands, her patches of smoky periocular skin and her belly skin so pale it’s almost white.
Her back is lined with spines and she wears no clothing.
She has no legs and, where they would be on a Human, instead has a large, muscular tail, ending in a horizontal fluke, like a Terran Cetacean.
The places on her head where a Human would have ears bear instead hydrodynamic fins.
Her eyes are a piercing blue colour with [W] shaped pupils and her neck sports eight long slits, four on each side.
She orients herself vertically in the watercolumn, looking down at the Terran in the tank with her.
The two greet eachother by swivelling their respective forearms in mirrored 90° arcs in front of their chests, after which, they have a brief exchange of signs, though not using any grammar I recognise from Galactic Basic Sign Language.
The Terran woman hands the Osiyul the collar, which, after a brief moment’s hesitation, she affixes around her neck over her gills.
The attendant Terran then gestures to the chamber with the enormous, bisected egg in it and the larger woman drifts over to it.
Somewhat awkwardly, she slides the fluke of her tail into the opening at the top and then fans her arms upward to slide the rest of her body into the device, up to her waist.
Experimentally, she directs it up, down, backward, forward, left and right before signalling a presumable ‘OK’ to the woman behind her.
The attendant seals the far door, isolating the woman in the chamber.
She looks slightly nervous as the water level drops from the ceiling, lower and lower, until her head breaches its surface.
She does
not immediately begin to suffocate.
The aquarespirator collar seems to be functioning as intended.
The egg shaped object she’s currently inside of does not begin to sink when it looks like it should.
In fact, the waterlevel manages to reach all the way to its base and then keep going without its position in space changing at all.
Her hoverchair is
also functioning as intended.
The airlock now completely empty, the nearside door opens.
Mr Bak steps forward, performing the same arm swivel as the woman in the tank did before switching to his own sound medium language to say “Welcome to the Citadel ODR, Ms Miraala. It’s a pleasure to have you here.”
Her facial expression is unreadable as she signs in the direction of the group.
Having no vocal chords, there is no voice onto which her translated meaning can be layered. However, the metatextual information provided along with her translation informs me of what I already knew. She is a well spoken young woman with (by
my species’ standards) a decidedly masculine softness to her mode of speech.
“I am pleased to be given this opportunity…” she turns to Emiko “…You are the one I was to meet the other day?”
Stepping forward with a remorseful grimace, Emiko answers “Yes. My sincere apologies for failing to attend… Circumstances conspired against us.”
Her tone is flagged as mirthful as the aquatic woman signs “‘Circumstances conspired against you’ is a way that
only a Terran would describe an assassination attempt(!)”
There is a general chuckle at that.
“So… Ms Miraala, there’s a lot to discuss, disclaim and otherwise brief you on: Most of it will be stuff you can hear about at the security briefing we’re all about to receive but I just thought I would allow Tcakqaal here to have a brief chat with you about the accommodations we’ve made for you on the ship, if that’s alright.”
“Of course.” responds the soft spoken woman, politely turning her attention to me.
Despite her large size, the height she loses from her lower body being folded inside her hoverchair means that I’m talking down to her from my perch atop Victor’s shoulder.
I consider hopping down to ground level out of respect but that might make talking even
more difficult, given the obstacle to eye contact presented by her mobility device.
I decide to stay wear I am and address her from Victor’s shoulder.
Extending my wings and dipping my head in a respectful greeting, I address the woman “It shall be my pleasure to accommodate you aboard my ship, Ms Miraala. However, I’m sure you are already aware that it is a vessel primarily designed for terrestrial vertebrates, who breathe an oxygenated, gaseous atmosphere… As such, the accommodations for aquatic species are… not as comprehensive as they could be.”
Her tone is flagged as warm and understanding as she signs “Nothing I’m not used to, Captain… Though, I understand my
quarters will be waterfilled, at least?”
“Indeed… We already have two Rethijj crewmembers who require habtanks, so it was a relatively simple matter for my Maintenance Officer to convert one of the rooms to be watertight for you and my Chief Custodial Officer to rig you up a water purification and oxygenation system… Unfortunately, regulations wouldn’t have allowed for the airlock to have protruded into the hallway so, that means, your quarters will have
slightly less living space than most.” I say, ruefully.
“The last airbreathing ship I was on expected me to wear one of these the entire journey…” she says, tapping her respirator collar “…Even constantly moisturising my skin, I had a bad case of xeroderma by the end of that trip… This arrangement is a marked improvement over
that one!”
“That sounds
awful… My Engineering Lead has explained to me what happens to
her skin if she fails to apply her water retention gel to an area of it when moving through air for any significant period… It certainly
doesn’
t sound like something I would like to force you to tolerate!… If you experience any issues at all with the hygiene or water quality in your quarters, please do not hesitate to bring it up either to myself or Chief Custodial Officer Glark… If you notice any
structural issues, then either myself or Maintenance Officer Bam are the ones you need to talk to.”
Her sharp featured face takes on a warm expression as she signs “I certainly will, Captain. Thank you.”
“Alright then, shall we make our way to the gymnasium?” smiles Emiko.
There is a general chorus of agreement as the six of us present turn to make our way back up the stairs.
Ms Miraala’s hoverchair is buffeted a little as each step causes it to jump [20cm] or so higher in the air in a way that looks moderately uncomfortable.
“You might be able to change the settin’s on that…” opines Victor “…there’ll be one called something like ‘gradients’ that you can play around with an’ see if it’ll make stair climbin’ any smoother…”
“I’m sure she has used one
before, Victor.” says Emiko with a wry smirk.
“Yeah, OK… sorry… Just, in my line of work, I’d rather give an unnecessary piece of advice than
not give one that might’ve been useful.” answers the man, throwing up his hands in concession.
“Thank you for the advice.” signs the aquatic woman, tactfully not clarifying whether it was necessary.
With Mr Bak leading the way, we navigate the ground floor halls and eventually find our way to a set of open doors into a spacious room.
I see the group that was lead here by the other attendant, Kasongo, I see a few of the new additions to the ODR contingent aboard, I see some ODR employees.
I see no sign of the individual who made it necessary to hold this briefing in such a spacious, high ceilinged area.
Mr Bak is the first one past the threshold and starts in surprise as his head whips up at a 45° angle to his left.
Forewarned by the man’s reaction, Emiko exhibits no surprise as she follows his gaze and warmly greets “Ah, Mr Ro’oo’u’ouu… I’m very glad to see that you made it.”
