- At Coney Island either eat copius amounts of hot dogs or be fired out of a cannon.
- Memorize and recall a series of names at Ellis Island.

I’m six feet one, two hundred pounds. I travel the world, through all kind of towns.
I got a number two all over. Girl up the wall, i drove her.
Scar on my head. Put’s the guys on thin threads.
I spent a lot of time in strange towns listening to strange sounds
Nobody expects a guy like me to write I guess i don’t look too bright
But i like it
I like fighting in the cage and eating ass I like sitting in little cafes And watching people pass
During my last boxing match I sang songs by The Doors The silver sanctum never heard that before.
Intricately terrified of being forgotten. echoing hallways as wide as buttons. Empty bottles that drench me in pity. In a far away city.
I’m far from home. I’m always alone. A new girl almost every night. Gave mama an awful fright.
These streets of empty fields that never fade. Never live to see the light of day. Never expected a guy like me to write. the light of day sure is bright.
I’m six feet two if I stand up straight, but my posture isn’t great.
Insomnia release me.

2023.06.09 06:15 mmpoohbearkat Raising kids in the city
Hi all, I live in NYC. Love and hate it as most New Yorkers do. I can't see myself living anywhere else as I've already tried living elsewhere. We don't live in the best district for schools but not in the worst. It is very okay. And I go back and forth on whether or not I want to move to Long Island or somewhere more suburban. I really can't stand the suburbs though. So I wanted to know if there were any other parents out there who are deliberately staying in the city public school system (not private since we cannot afford NYC private schools). Who out there is the outlier standing firm in raising kids for the sake of not sheltering them but also not trying to throw them to the wolves? I feel like I'm doing a disservice to my kids by not giving them the best schools in the suburbs....just want to feel like I'm not alone...

2023.06.09 06:13 Several_Tax_9891 AITA for dropping my ex boyfriends stuff off at his house?
psa - sorry this is so long but there were details i really wanted to add am i the asshole for dropping my now ex boyfriends stuff off to his house? info - i 18 female broke up with my 18 male then boyfriend due to the fact that i realized he was emotionally abusive and manipulative. i learned this through therapy and deeply talking to my mom (she and my dad got divorced for the same reason. my dad had the exact same emotionally abusive and manipulative tendencies through their marriage) we dated for almost two years. once i realized everything was not as i thought, i knew i needed out (it took me a very long time to realize i was being abused and manipulated). after that fact, i came to the knowledge that he cheated on me during our first months of dating (simply because i wasn’t ready to have sex and that’s what he wanted) so he went to his ex girlfriend for that. i didn’t feel exactly safe telling him he was abusive and i really just wanted to be done without being gaslit so i didn’t bring up the cheating either. i just told him we were going separate ways as we are freshly out of high school (TRUE). he did not accept this. i also mentioned that because we’re so young i need to learn a little more self love before loving anyone else (also VERY true). he told me he wasn’t going to let me go ever etc. and even tried to manipulate me by lying about a heart condition and that he was getting a heart transplant. i found out both were lies from his parents. anyways flash forward a few weeks i found a few odds and ends of things i still had of his. i told him i would get them back to him before i started packing for college. i mentioned dropping them off to him when i was over by his house for errands next and he got extremely mad saying that we could see eachother and hang out and that i didn’t need to “avoid” seeing him. he’s an ex for a reason and i don’t feel the need to hang out etc. especially where it’s so fresh and we both need time to heal. he told me he started dating someone (also something i found out was a lie from his best friend.) anyways im very clearly done and he will not leave me alone. i had one of my guy friends with me and had cleaned all of my exs items so i dropped the box of things off at his house. one of the items i had in there was a dirt bike helmet that we had used when going riding. i dropped the box off and texted him that i did so once i was a safe distance from his house. he immediately got really upset and called me over 10 times. he texted me telling me i was a stupid bitch and that i was an asshole. why? because apparently i wasn’t supposed to have the helmet and if his parents found out i had it they would be pissed. i apologized and told him my intent wasn’t to get him in trouble. he continued calling me a bitch. i didn’t respond because i refuse to put up with his blatant disrespect for any longer. the next morning he let me know that all of his stuff was ruined because of a storm that came through before he got home. i found it weird since it was in a box closed shut and under the awning of his front deck AND the fact that i only live ten mins away from him in the same city and i didn’t see a huge storm pass. (i then later found out that this was all a lie as well. he wanted to guilt trip me into getting back with him i guess?) anyways long story short i know im probably not the asshole? but i guess i could’ve had the decency to give it back to him in person and there is a chance his parents did get mad about the helmet. but i genuinely don’t care anymore and just want him to leave me alone. i kind of just wanted to rant but i guess i’m asking if i really am a bitch hahaha.

2023.06.09 05:46 Vision-Quest-9054 Karate Cooking
Cast of Characters:
Kevin Eggs– A bumbling wannabe Hibachi chef fresh out of culinary arts school
Mr. Kritt – Restaurant Manager and owner of Moriyuki’s Grill.
Male restaurant patron
Female restaurant patron
Nick the chef – A drunken hibachi cook who gets himself fired. He eventually carries out an armed robbery to compensate for his lost earnings.
A clueless and reckless culinary arts attempts hibachi cooking at his first job without much success.
A kitchen/bar island counter top is positioned at center stage. Three bar stools line the front while a stove/grill top remains partially hidden behind the counter. Above the counter is a dangling Japanese paper lantern.
(Lighting illuminates the main stage area. Male and female patrons are separately seated on their respective barstools with each one positioned opposite the other at the end of each counter corner. They are partially facing the audience with their gazes focused on the main chef behind the counter. Main chef Nick is fully facing the audience and is performing his tasks poorly under a drunken stupor. Both restaurant patrons are grimacing and recoiling nervously due to his recklessness. Kevin enters stage right with a confused expression written on his face.)
(Nick is swaying left and right on his feet while clumsily waving a meat cleaver in one hand and an empty bottle in the other)
So, you two (hiccup) wanna see me make a chicken hand sandwich? (hiccup)
(Grimacing and scared) Please, no. We just wanted a vegetable stir fry and steak. Maybe coming here was a bad idea.
(Kevin tries to grab someone’s attention, but no one listens.)
Um excuse me?
(Also grimacing) You make a chicken and ham sandwich?
(Nick is aimlessly clattering his cleaver against the grill/stove top.)
Not chicken and ham, (hiccup) chicken and hand sandwich! Now put your pretty little hand on the cutting board and I’ll show ya.
(Mr. Kritt frantically enters stage left and interrupts the chaotic scene. He is shaking his fist in outrage)
(Furiously) Nick! You’ve been drinking again! How many times have I warned you that if I catch you intimidating our customers while under the influence, I would throw your drunken ass out of my establishment!
Um, pardon me?
(Kevin is still ignored.)
(Nick points his meat cleaver at Mr. Kritt.)
Okay dude, you need to chill.
Don’t you point that thing at me!
(Mr. Kritt pries the cleaver out of Nick’s hand by the handle and drops it on the countertop. He then points his finger directly towards the right stage exit.)
You’re fired! Get out! You’re a menace to the patrons and the establishment.
(After a pause, Mr. Kritt steps towards Nick, seizes him by the back collar of his shirt and pants and proceeds to forcibly eject him from the building. Nick is dragged to the right exit. Kevin side-steps out of their way.)
Get the hell out of my restaurant! Out! Out! Out! Out!
(Nick is shoved out the right stage exit. He is still clutching his empty bottle. Mr. Kritt turns his focus to Kevin)
What do you want?!
(Kevin stammers through Mr. Kritt’s annoyed gaze. He produces a certification paper.)
I…I’m sorry. My name’s Kevin Eggs and I’m looking for a job. I’m fresh out of culinary arts school and was looking for a hibachi kitchen position…these are my credentials…
(Mr. Kritt swipes the paper out of Kevin’s hand, glances over it for a second, and hands it back to him. He is much calmer at this point, but still retains a firm tone of voice.)
Congratulations, Kevin. You’re hired. Welcome to Moriyuki’s Hibachi Bar and Grill. You can start now.
(He leads Kevin back to the Island stove countertop and hands him a togue and apron.)
Wait. No formal interview. No questions asked? Thank you, Mister…
(Both men firmly shake hands)
…Kritt. Jay Kritt. Restaurant owner.
(Mr. Kritt shifts his attention to the petrified patrons who are perched at the edge of their barstools.)
My sincerest apologies to the both of you for what just happened. The misconduct you just witnessed does not reflect our company policy. I assure you that this will not happen again. Perhaps if you two choose to come here again, I would be most happy to offer you both a complimentary dinner on the house? I understand if you do not wish return here.
(Both patrons relax and lighten up a little. They periodically sip from their water glasses)
No, as a matter of fact, I think we’ll stick around and give our order another shot. It is, after all, complimentary.
And I am curious to see how this new chef will perform.
I assure you that you will not be disappointed.
(He shoots Kevin a stern glance and addresses him in a strict tone. Mr. Kritt also points his menacing index finger towards Kevin.)
One little foul-up from you, and you’re out of here! Oh, and by the way, take your shoes off. We need to keep a ‘Japanese’ feel to the atmosphere. (Note that Mr. Kritt uses air quotes to emphasize the word ‘Japanese’ in his sentence.)
Oh, sorry about that, sir.
(Keven bends over behind the counter to take his shoes off while Mr. Kritt exits stage left.)
Sooooooo, what did you two order?
We already placed our orders earlier. The last chef put our orders under the counter.
(Kevin bends over to look beneath the stovetop and remains invisible until he finds two pieces of paper and emerges back into view. He holds up each piece of paper and reads them aloud.)
Ah! One order of soy stir fry, and another order of fried flank steak with scallops. Coming right up!
(Kevin bangs his fist on the countetable surface and shouts out a command. Both patrons appear startled and tense up every time he does this)
(An offstage hand from behind the scenes tosses Kevin a tomato. He catches it and places it on the counter, then bangs his fist again.)
(Offstage hand tosses Kevin a cucumber which he sets down. He bangs his fist and repeats the process)
(Kevin catches an onion, places it next to the other vegetables, and bangs his fist again.)
(A hand tosses him a piece of steak. Kevin catches it, but almost drops it as it constantly slips and slides in his hand.)
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Got it! (Chuckling) Heheh! Slippery little piece of steak, ain’t ya? Don’t worry fellow customer, I successfully grabbed your meat and now I’m going to beat it for being naughty little sucker.
(Sounding disturbed) Please do not say that ever again.
(Kevin realizes his Freudian slip)
Ooops. That didn’t sound right.
(After setting the fillet on the counter. He pulls two spatulas out of a cupboard beneath the stove counter top. As the patrons gradually ease up from their muscle tension, Kevin begins twirling the spatulas in each hand. As he twirls each one, he loses his coordination and drops them both on the surface.)
(Smiling) Sorry. First day.
(Kevin takes both spatulas and uses them like percussion instruments. He uses synchronized hand movements and coordinated arm crossing gestures to bang out a tune on the hard grill surface using the kitchen utensils. He loses his groove and momentum by accidentally flipping a spatula out of his grasp and onto the ground behind him.)
(Grinning) My bad. Oh well, guess I’ll have to cook with just one utensil.
(Kevin wipes off the stovetop surface with a rag.)
So, how long have you two known each other?
MALE AND FEMALE PATRONS
(Unison) We’re not together.
Oh, sorry. What’s your story, then?
(Kevin looks at the man patron as he begins chopping the onion on a cutting board)
I’ve been negotiating this multi-million-dollar contract all day with some of our biggest partners from Japan. It was a tough one alright, but once you get past the language barriers and persuade those electronic geeks to start pushing their signatures on every certified document, It’s a success story. Ironically, I thought to myself, why not celebrate this victory at a Japanese themed eatery to make things a bit more apropos? The guys at the office said -
(In a sing-song voice) Bo-oring! What’s your story, miss?
(Kevin shifts his eyes to the female patron. The male patron shuts up and scowls at Kevin)
Me? Oh, well…my boyfriend broke up with me and…I loved him so much…
(Female patron starts sniffling and crying. Kevin starts sniffling and tearing up as well due to the onion fumes)
He told me that he would be my soulmate, forever. And then last night, he dumped me for some French slut! So here I am, eating alone again…
(Female Patron breaks out in tears. Kevin follows suit.)
(Emotionally Distraught) I mean, what do French girls have to offer over us American women? Looks? Wit? Charm? Non-stop steamy jungle sex? Well fuck you, Sean! Fuck you! Oh, I’m sorry cook Kevin. Did I upset you? You seem so sensitive and empathetic to my feelings right now. That’s so sweet of you.
(Sobbing) (*sniff. Sniff\)* No! It’s just these stupid onions!
(Female Patron drops her head in disappointment.)
I sound like a wuss right now. I’m a badass hibachi chef, not a wuss. I’ll prove it to you guys by karate chopping this onion with my hand!
(Kevin raises his hand in flat, vertical knife motion above his head and brings his hand down hard on the cutting board.)
(Kevin’s hand chop makes contact with the remaining whole onion. Instead of slicing it in half, the onion slides off of the counter and onto the floor.)
(Kevin pauses, then recomposes himself. He slides some of the freshly chopped onions onto the stove)
Now where were we? Oh, yes! The grill. (Cheerfully) I have an idea! Let’s get rid of these long faces and lighten things up! Nobody here should be unhappy.
I was happy until you opened you pissed on my parade.
It’s not stir-fry without eggs in it. They don’t call me Kevin Eggs for nothing.
(Kevin retrieves a carton of eggs from a bottom cupboard beneath the stove)
Since I’m sometimes a scatter brain and mess things up, my family used to call me Kevin scrambled eggs. Get it? Scrambled eggs! Ha! Ha! Ha! (laughing)
(Kevin’s laughter quickly dies down as he notices that his joke was received with cold, dead stares. Female patron utters an annoyed, soft groan.)
(Upbeat chuckle) Okay. Here’s a good one. When I went to Hollywood, I bumped into actor Kevin Bacon. Well, he was nice enough to give me his autograph when I asked him for one. And when I did that, my parents called us the breakfast combo. Why? Because his name’s Kevin and so is mine. Only thing is, our last names complement each other nicely. Bacon and Eggs! Arr! Arr! Arr!
(Interrupting) Just shut up and cook the damn food already.
Yeah, enough. When do we get to eat?
(Ecstatically) Hey. Watch this!
(Kevin selects an egg out of the carton. He picks up his spatula and holds it vertically above his head as if to bring it down in a chopping motion. He underhandedly tosses the egg into mid-air in front of him while attempting to split it in the fraction of a second when it remains directly suspended before his face. He does a karate chop shout during in course of action)
(Kevin misses the target and swings into an empty space due to poor timing. The egg plummets to the floor and breaks.)
(Kevin tosses another egg into midair and repeats the process a second time.)
(He swings/chops at a downward angle and misses again. The egg hits the floor. Both patrons cringe at his efforts.)
(Kevin tries tossing up an egg a third time, but misses his target. The egg accidentally lands on the male patron’s head. Kevin is sincerely apologetic at first, but can’t help cracking a bad joke last minute. Female Patron covers her mouth in alarm.)
Whoops! I’m so sorry sir! That was an egg-cident.
(Angrily) I’ve had enough bullshit for one night! I’m outa here.
(Male Patron storms off the set: exit stage right)
(Disdainful tone) You really suck at entertainment, don’t you?
C’mon, give me a little credit for trying. It’s my first day here and-
(He breaks off into a panicked exclamation as fumes rise from the vegetables on the stove.)
Oh my God! The food is burning!
(Kevin frantically drops his spatula)
Oh, not again!
(Kevin hurriedly scoops the few veggies on the stove into his hands and onto a plate. After doing so, he realizes that he just burned his hands. He flails the wildly while looking around the room for relief. Unbeknownst to him, Mr. Kritt furiously enters the scene and stands directly behind Kevin with his hands on his hips.)
Owwwww! Ow! Ow! Hot! Hot! Hot! Hot! Hot!
(Kevin submerges his hands into the female patron’s water glass and sighs with relief. She appears to be disgusted)
(Loud and agitated) Kevin! You blew it! I turn my back on you for just one second, and bang, I come back to a disaster. Unreliable. You’re fired! Out of here! Gone!
Mr. Kritt, it was just a little mishap. It’s still just my first day here.
(Points to exit)
(At that moment entering from stage right, Nick bursts onto the scene clad in a ski mask and carrying a handgun. Nick points the gun in the direction of Mr. Kritt, female patron, and Kevin. All three appear to be shocked and terrified.)
(Shouting angrily) Alright all of you! Hands up where I can see them! Get them the fuck up now!
(Everyone raises their hands into the air)
Oh my God!
(Weak and trembling tone) What the hell do you want? I have nothing special to offer.
Your money, dumbass! Front end register is empty. So I guess I’ll have to try the manager’s office instead.
(Moment of Realization) Wait a minute! You’re Nick! I recognize your voice now. I just fired your ass.
Yeah, that’s right. I’m comin’ back to get what’s mine. No paycheck, remember? So, I guess I gotta take what you owe me by force.
I don’t owe you nothin’! You’re a bum who doesn’t deserve a dime even if his life depended on it.
(More aggressively) Shut the fuck up and get me what I want before I blow your head open!
(Intimidated, Mr. Kritt takes a step back and responds in a shakier tone of voice)
Alright. Alright. If it’s money you want, then I’ll lead you back to the office. No hard feelings.
No, wait. I want something else first. Hey lady, kick your purse over here.
(Nick waves his gun at the female patron. She complies by gradually sliding her purse with her foot towards the direction of Nick)
Atta girl! Mr. Kritt? Your wallet please.
(Mr. Kritt fishes his wallet out of his pant pocket and nervously tosses it onto the floor)
(Sneering smile) Ah, last but not least, my replacement. You’re next.
(Kevin gives him a nervous smile)
Actually, I don’t have mine in my pocket. I put it in one of my shoes.
(Annoyed) Then get it! And no tricks! If I see a knife or a cleaver, you’re dead.
No worries. I won’t do anything.
(Kevin bends over to the point at which he is totally obscured by the entire counter island. Shuffling noises can be heard from behind the surface.)
What’s taking you so long?
Uh-just a minute! I’ve got it. Nope. That’s not it.
(A spatula is recklessly thrown over the counter top by Kevin, followed by a vegetable.)
(Uneasily agitated) Hey! Don’t do that! What are you, stupid? Quit it now!
I think I got! No. Not that shoe.
(One of Kevin’s shoes flies out from beneath the countertop and hits Nick in the face, knocking him unconscious. Nick’s eyes crisscross as he slumps to the ground. Mr. Kritt and the female patron exchange relieved facial expressions. Kevin then emerges into view triumphantly holding the other shoe.)
Here it is! Got it! Hey what happened?
(Grateful expression) You saved my business and my life. That’s what you did.
You sure as hell did. Now excuse me while I call the police before I throw up.
(Female Patron pulls out her phone and retrieves her purse before hastily exiting stage right.)
What did you have in those shoes?
(In a proud tone) They’re steel toe shoes, Mr. Kritt.
(Mr. Kritt grins while clasping Kevin over the shoulder.)
Ya know what, Kevin? Maybe you’re not so bad after all. Sure, you’re a klutz and your jokes stink, but I think I might have a good place for you here. In fact, I’ll give you another chance by training you myself. You’re rehired.
(Kevin returns the grin to his boss)
Really, Mr. Kritt?
Mr. Kritt I’m never gonna let you down again. We’re gonna have some good times together!
(Kevin violently clasps Mr. Kritt over the shoulder causing him to grunt in pain. In spite of this Mr. Kritt manages to create a half sardonic half sincere grin on his face.)
(Grimacing) Yeahhhh...I’m sure we will.
(Lights fade out.)

2023.06.09 05:29 Cody2819 Two Questions
Firstly, when Sonic first encountered Knight, a Squid is just randomly stationed nearby as if waiting for Sonic. Could someone be controlling it to help Sonic escape this first encounter?
The voice talking to Sonic could probably be the one, because she needed Sonic to get the Emeralds. Sage is another good guess because she's beginning to see just how impossible Sonic can pull things off, and she has been stated to be controlling the tech while also having something preventing her from doing so with the Titans.
And my second question. You use the purple gate to go fishing at different ponds across the islands. Given that these gates are clearly different than the other gates, what could their original purpose be?
The regular gates relive memories. So, what could these purple gates had been for? The Ancients' home world? Could be simply pulling stuff from Sonic and Big's memories to fill in the ponds...but...
I just get the feeling these purple gates are something different than just regular memories and plain fishing. What are some of your thoughts? Thanks for reading and giving feedback. ^

2023.06.09 05:28 cannonfunk [FOR SALE] Losing interest in vinyl & out of work due to the union strike - buy my records before they're sold elsewhere! SEALED: Rock, jazz, funk, soul, indie, rap, country, etc.
I've been collecting vinyl for well over a decade, but as I've gotten older my priorities & interests have shifted a bit. Additionally, the film industry strike has affected my income, so I figured that now is as good a time as any to start passing on my music to someone else.
I plan on keeping the core of my collection for now
, but here's a bunch of stuff I either never got around to listening to, or don't see myself listening to much in the future. By the end of this month I plan on making another post with used vinyl, but that requires a little more work. Shipping is...
- $5 for a 1xLP
- $6 for 2-3
- or $7 flat for 4+
All items will be shipped in new mailers with padding and/or stiffeners, and box sets (or 4+ LPs) will be packaged in bulk LP boxes with plenty of protection.
ALL LP's ARE SEALED
M/M unless otherwise noted Jazz/Soul/Funk/Hip Hop
- Soundtrack - La La Land - $13 - A couple light crease marks on sleeve

2023.06.09 05:25 yeahtheboysssss Local advice and recommendations. Much appreciated 😊
Hi, I’m flying to Cairns for a work trip landing the Sunday 11/6/23 night and leaving Sunday 16/6/23 late arvo. I will be staying on the esplanade working from 8am to 4pm in the afternoon every day.
I would enjoy checking out Cairns although with my limited time in the morning in the evenings I know they’re probably isn’t much I can do.
But I’d love to hear recommendations no matter how big or small.
For example, Your favourite coffee shop?
Any cool independent stores.
Walks or things to do around the city.
Your favourite place to get a snack or a meal? ( there will be 10 of us for work and I’ll do this with the team the other things I’ll likely do solo).
I also love fishing, and I wonder if it’s worth taking a travel rod to do some early-morning fishing somewhere off the Esplanade? Any bream ect around? I would take a light spin rod.
Cool bar or drink
All suggestions appreciated!

2023.06.09 05:22 chronic-venting Supporting Survivors of Domestic Violence CrimethInc
- Recipes for Disaster: An Anarchist Cookbook Helping Women and Society Escape Violent Relationships
Women exist in a "domesticated" combat zone. On any given day in the United States, an average of 480 women will be raped, 5,760 women will be assaulted, and 4 will be murdered by a [cis] male partner. Domestic violence [against women] is an assault on women's bodies and minds by those who claim to love them and love to claim them. The success of this violence depends on the complicity of community. If we intend to bring about true liberation, we must foster explicitly antiauthoritarian behavior in both personal and political life. No hierarchy is acceptable and no domination is justifiable—not even "behind closed doors." Because one in four women will be assaulted (likely including someone you love), we must wage war on domestic violence. We serve to empower our communities best by fighting the violence and hierarchy closest to home… or in the home. Ingredients
Stage One: Helping Her
- Outreach materials
- Basic safety materials—pepper spray, whistles, deadbolts, phone
- Knowledge of local resources
- A network of safe communities/spaces for women
- Personal dedication to the complete annihilation of authority
Educate yourself. Domestic violence (DV) is rarely a single instance of battery, but instead a pattern of power and control. It may involve sexual or physical violence, or it may be a complex web of threats, property destruction, isolation, and emotional, financial, and mental abuse. Understanding this will help you recognize abuse if it comes without physical bruises.
If you are truly ready to have your mother, friend, or daughter tell you what is happening in her private life, invite her to come to you. If you are speaking against violence and rape, she will know you are ready. Wheatpaste neighborhoods with posters about domestic violence, hold street fairs against violence in residential neighborhoods, plaster infoshops and collective homes with signs that invite women into a safe space. If she, her children, or her animals are in immediate danger, however, you may need to approach her. Never approach the abuser: most abusers are paranoid and will quickly assume their victims have exposed them, and may retaliate against them.
Follow her lead. The most important thing you will do is be there for her, even if you feel useless. Trying to be a hero can only undermine her autonomy. Let her make her own decisions, even bad ones, and never tell her what to do. Give her back control: refuse to dominate her and recreate the abuse.
Give her a phone number or a way to contact you or someone in the community. Best is a cell phone that will always be on, or a collective house's number where someone is usually awake.
Let her talk. Don't wince or gasp: tales of [rape] and strangulation are not easy to listen to, but they are harder to tell. Survivors are often terrified of either tainting someone else's world with their trauma or not being believed. Tell her you believe her. You will be changed by what you hear; thank her for that. Confirm what may seem obvious.
An abuser spends a lot of time telling her she is crazy, and that no one would believe her. Tell her that you are listening, and offer eye contact and physical closeness if she is comfortable with it. Assure her that the way she feels is okay. There is no "normal" way to respond to abnormal acts of violence. Understand that the shield of invulnerability has been shattered (41% of rape victims and 89% of domestic violence victims expect to be assaulted again). She may be hyper-vigilant; the best way to help is to make her feel safe and legitimize/recognize her fears.
Focus on practical and immediate concerns. Where can one buy mace? What organizations work with DV issues? Ask her what she needs in order to leave: shelter? transportation? a job? childcare? money? Help her find these resources. Then ask what she needs to stay out of the relationship. For most women, it takes seven to fourteen attempts to leave their abusers. If she doesn't have the resources to stay gone, she may return because he can support her. Many abusers manipulate these needs. This is what makes DV such a pernicious crime: the perpetrator is the person who knows her best.
Address her immediate safety. If she is living with the abuser, make sure she has a plan to get out during a violent episode (contact your local coalition against DV for safety plans). Offer to keep personal papers and a packed suitcase for her and some extra money. Make sure she has a phone. An old cell phone without service can still dial 911 if charged. Consider establishing code words for her to use if she needs help, or other signals—a porch light off, for example, could let the neighbors know they should contact the police. If she doesn't live with her abuser, offer to find someone to stay with her or nearby. Do a safety check: make sure phone lines can't be cut, doors have deadbolts, and windows are nailed shut. If she wants to stay in hiding, help her cover her tracks by getting all mail sent to another address or post office box; offer to put your name on utilities. If she rides a bus or bike, find a car for her to borrow. Find community members who can do errands with her, pick her up from work, watch the children, etc. 90% of stalking cases are former intimate partners, not strangers.
The anti-DV movement started as an underground railroad of homes. Consider where she stays carefully. If the abuser knows where she is staying, she can feel like a sitting duck, especially if she stays with a [cis man]—an abuser's insecurity and suspicions can easily turn to rage. The majority of extreme violence and murder occur when the woman tries to leave, because the abuser feels he is losing control of her. Taking a survivor into your home is a serious commitment; unless you are prepared to internalize her constant vigilance and your home is very secure, she may be safer with someone else.
If she wants, help her use the legal system to file charges, obtain a protective order, file for custody, or get a divorce. Discuss the pros and cons of this in relation to safety, not politics. Until we develop an alternative, we cannot criticize a woman for using "the system." It is imperative, however, that she doesn't invest her safety or emotional wellbeing in the criminal justice system, as it often fails.
The community might want to deal with or "out" the abuser. Some communities have ostracized abusers, boycotted their businesses, refused to speak to them. You could make posters of his face, or spray paint his house. You can run abusers out of town, though understand this has the potential of resulting in his abusing someone somewhere else. You can threaten him with violence. No matter what is done, it must be acceptable to the survivor, because her well-being is at stake. Stage Two: Helping Us
There are many steps we must take as communities and collectives to be welcoming and radicalizing spaces for survivors. At the same time, we must each take personal responsibility for shifting the public conscience toward abhorrence for violence. In a patriarchal state, violence toward and the rape of women prop up sexist oppression and exploitation. We cannot transform "rape culture" without committing ourselves to resisting and eradicating all patriarchy.
We must redefine sex and relationships away from terms of violence, power, domination and status. In our relationships we can try to create a new vocabulary that [prioritizes] consent and equality.
[Cis] men in particular need to organize. [Most] DV is a [cis] man's problem—women just suffer the consequences. A radical [cis] heterosexual male must give up the privileges of his gender—only then can he be approachable, only then will he be capable of offering meaningful help to a survivor. You cannot aid a survivor while allowing for other forms of sexism to prevail. [... Cis m]en can unlearn their gender construction and undermine patriarchy; imagine if every boy grew up around men who were struggling against patriarchy and violence. Account
Taheera called the police after Mark had threatened to take their five-month-old baby, Juan. There were bruises on her neck from a previous incident, and Mark was arrested. It had been Mark's idea to move to the city when Taheera was 3 months pregnant. Taheera started to go to a low-cost clinic for prenatal care, but stopped going when Mark accused her of sleeping with the doctor. The first time Mark hit her was after she made a list of baby names. He was jealous of the attention the baby was getting.
I am a social worker, and an agency referred her to me. When we first talked, Taheera kept looking behind her. I suggested she push her chair against the wall, and promised her that I would keep checking down the hallway for Mark (even though Mark was in jail and wasn't going to be coming).
She was scared of Mark and of what he might do to her and the baby, especially now that he had been arrested. Mark's job was their only source of income, and he might be fired if he didn't get out of jail soon. She had a lot of questions about the legal system and was curious to know if I had talked to other women who felt like she did. We talked about local groups and shelters that could help, but mostly I just listened. I gave her my number and a 24-hour crisis number. Taheera chose to bail Mark out, using all their savings, but not to speak with him. The state had Mark sign a "no contact order" telling him he couldn't contact her or move back home, so he got an apartment upstairs from Taheera and made a point of bringing lots of "bitches" home so Taheera would see. Taheera didn't show up to court and the case was dropped.
Two weeks later, Taheera called and said that Mark was upstairs, Juan was asking for him, and that she was trying to resist going up to him. She missed him. I simply listened, and told her, as best I could, that her feelings were normal. She kept asking, "What's wrong with me?" I tried to refocus on Mark's problems. Taheera finally agreed to walk downtown and sign up for a support group that had childcare. But she never did, and instead went upstairs to Mark.
Eight months later, Taheera called from a payphone. Mark had held a gun to her head because he was angry that they now lived together in the upstairs apartment but he still had to pay for the downstairs apartment. He cut the phone cord so she couldn't call out. Things had been okay for a while: Mark had let her get a job and was being a "good daddy." Taheera told me that she had left several times, but each time he had found her or threatened her family Taheera felt too tired to leave, and just wanted things to "stay sane."
Taheera decided to save up money. We met for lunch one afternoon and made a list of what to do, which I kept so Mark wouldn't see it. I also gave her an old cell phone to call 911, which she hid in a cabinet. She got a separate bank account and started funneling part of her paycheck into it. She told a neighbor what was happening and gave the neighbor a packed suitcase to keep for her. I researched Section 8 housing in her hometown, and had the papers sent to my office. Taheera asked me to look up domestic violence resources in her hometown on my computer, because Mark made a point of checking out which websites she had visited when he got home from work. Mark grew suspicious, probably because Taheera seemed to be happier. Mark started calling her work and hanging up, and kept this up until she was fired. He bought her a cell phone so he could call her repeatedly any time she was out. He started not letting her leave the house with Juan, so that she would have to come back. He took her car keys. Eight months before, Taheera might have given up, because Mark seemed to be catching on.
I don't know all the details, but one night Taheera got someone from her church to park outside the apartments and start shouting. Mark, easily annoyed, went out to shut them up, and she and Juan got their suitcases from the neighbors and left through a back door, where the church friend picked them up.
I don't know if Taheera's story is a success story, but it is a real story. Since then, Mark has found out where she lives and has gained visitation rights to Juan through a court. Mark has also assaulted her twice since she left, once running her and Juan off the road. Taheera, however, has broken her connection to Mark and broken the cycle of abuse. Sometimes I think about her friend from church and the neighbor, and wonder what would have happened without them.
Recently, she read an article about my being arrested for protesting and asked what I was doing. I told her that I fight violence and hierarchy on all levels and she muttered, "Oh." But yesterday she left a message saying she was reading a lot and did I have any favorite authors? I'm thinking Emma Goldman or a little Naomi Wolfe.

Cycle 6 finale! This is your final week in teams, the final brief selected by first callout, and your final shot at immunity. What an amazing story this would be.
Speaking of stories, this week, we're all about them! You will be inspired by Korean Mythology this week. From Dangun to Gumho to Dokkaebi and more, your photo should reflect a myth or mythical creature from Korea.
This week, you will be allowed a four sentence description AND inspo photo.
Now, let's see who your final teammates will be!
AUDREY Gumiho The gumiho is a 9-tailed fox that can transform itself into a beautiful woman. In this transformed state the gumiho retains some of its original fox-like features. Audrey's Gumiho Inspo Audrey's Photo
JESSICA Dokkaebi Dokkaebi are spirits that manifest as goblin like creatures.
The physical appearance of the dokkaebi is presented in many different ways and has varied by different time periods, but they have always been depicted as fearsome and awe-inspiring. The most common depiction of them is based on ancient roof tiles with dokkaebi patterns. Jessica's Dokkaebi Inspo Jessica's Photo
DAIANE SsangYong - "Twin Dragons" Twin dragons waited 1000 years to fly to heaven. Finally, a single cintamani (wish fulfilling jewel), which was necessary for the journey, was released. Each dragon encouraged the other to take it and make the trip, until both missed the opportunity. The king of heaven was so touched that he released a second cintamani and thus the two dragons entered heaven together. Daiane's SsangYong Inspo Daiane's Photo
JOAN “The Snake Goddess Migrated to Jeju Island” The tale starts with the daughter of a noble family being cast out for becoming pregnant before marriage. She is then put in a box and tossed into the water and lands on the Jeju shore. She is turned into a snake and gives birth to seven snake daughters. Joan's Snake Goddess Inspo Joan's Photo
REBECCA “Igong and the Fields of Seocheon” Also known as Hallakgungi, this god tended the Flower Garden Of Life And Death. This garden contained flowers that were really the souls of each person on Earth, and Igong oversaw the length and quality of each life. After ending those lives by plucking their flowers from the garden, Igong also decided on the soul’s merits for rebirth. Rebecca's Igong Inspo Rebecca's Photo
ISABELI "Yeongdeung Halmang, the Goddess of the Wind and Sea" Each year, in the liminal period between winter and spring, she comes roaring in from the sea. After 14 days of whirling fiercely about Jeju [Island], she makes her exit at Udo. Jeju people have but these two weeks to please Yeongdeung Halmang. For she is fickle, changeable, capricious and pernicious – and, never having lived among humans, has no genuine relationship with them. Isabeli's Yeongdeung Halmang Inspo Isabeli's Photo

2023.06.09 04:46 JapanApril2023 Belated Trip Report of Our Honeymoon
April 9 - April 26: Tokyo - Nanyo - Hakone - Kyoto - Osaka - Koyasan
We had two main goals for this trip to Japan: eat great food and see cherry blossoms. We had the best of both in the city of Nanyo in Yamagata prefecture. It's not a place that I've ever seen mentioned on Reddit or the western internet, so I wanted to share it with you all here.
What we learned
- Ship your luggage - The airport as well as every convenience store we walked into let us ship our luggage. This made traveling between cities significantly easier, and prices were always very reasonable. For single-night stays, we just packed what we needed for a single day and shipped our suitcases to the subsequent hotel.
- Google Maps is very helpful, but don't trust them for transfer times in public transit. We thought we were transit experts because we live in NYC, but the stations in Japan are even more complicated. Leave early if you need to catch a train.
- Almost all restaurants in Japan are good, but I'm somewhat of food snob. If you're like me, I recommend using Tabelog for reviews to find places that are a bit more special. The scoring is very different from western reviews. In general, anything above a 3.3 is very good. Scores are also significantly biased towards more expensive restaurants, so I'd recommend higher scores for fancier restaurants.
- Fruits and vegetables are relatively expensive and difficult to come by in Japan. We were able to get them at supermarkets, which can usually be found in the basement of any department store. Next time I'm in Japan, I'll consider bringing fiber supplements.
- Cherry Blossoms blooming times are very unpredictable. The Japan Meteorology Agency has a website with up to date cherry blossom predictions of over 1000 locations. Even if it doesn't have the exact cherry blossom site you want to visit, you're definitely going to see something close by. Websites of popular tourist destinations update the status of cherry blossoms as well.
- I recommend that you book hotels within 5 minutes walking distance from well-connected subway stations. A couple of our hotels were 10-15 minutes away from the station we needed to go to, so it was mildly irritating to repeat the same walk so often. In those places, there was actually a closer station, but if we took those, we'd have to transfer to a main station anyways.
- Standard hotel rooms have a double bed, which are about the same size as full sized beds in the US. If you're a move around a lot in your sleep like I do and want your partner to be well-rested, it's worth upgrading to a room that has a larger bed or two twins.
- If you're shopping, don't forget to bring your passport, so that you can get a duty free discount or refund.
- We booked our Hakone ryokan in January
- In February, we booked 3 fine dining restaurants, hotel in Kyoto, and temple lodging in Koyasan
- Saiho-ji (the moss temple in Kyoto) says that they require you to write an international postcard to request a reservation, and I saw that too late. Fortunately, there was also a Japanese website that let you make reservations, and we filled that out about a month in advanced with the help of Google translate. One of the fields required a Japanese address. We just used a friend's address, but you can probably use a hotel as well.
- Besides that, we booked all our other lodging and a week before our stay or less. A few times this wasn't best decision because our hotels were significantly more expensive this way.
- We left the first week in our trip very flexible, so that we could go somewhere that was in peak bloom during this time. We had a few places in mind, and ended up booking a ryokan in Nanyo the night before our stay there.
- Besides a few bucket list items, we figured that we'd be happy going anywhere. My wife and I made a shared Google map with all the sites that we found interesting without the intention of going to all of them and used that as a guide to choose what was convenient.
- I bought strawberries from a random department store, and an absurdly priced mango and orange from the Sembikiya flagship store. The strawberries were some of the best I had and worth the price of 1200 yen. The orange was tangier than any other orange we've had. However, you have to peel the thick membrane to fully appreciate it, and even then, I don't think it was worth anywhere close to 3500 yen. The mango was the most expensive at about 12000 yen, and everything about it was perfect. It was fragrant, the skin was thin, the texture was creamy, and it was as sweet as candy. It's hard to believe that this was grown from a plant.
- The real reason to go to Mori Art Museum is the stunning view of Tokyo. The main museum was closed, but we got to see an exhibit of Heatherwick Studio instead, which was more interesting than I expected.
- We loved the garden the Nezu Museum
- We went to Hotel Sara Kinshicho, a love hotel, and it was as fun as it looks on Youtube. The room was both more spacious and cheaper than most of our other hotel rooms. That said, it's a bit out of the way, so you should definitely ship your luggage to your next destination.
- We wanted to go to a conveyor belt sushi restaurant and settled on Kura Sushi. Considering that you're paying $1-$3 per plate, you shouldn't expect the highest quality of fish, but the eel was absolutely incredible. It seemed to be fresh off the grill and it was so saucy and fatty. I honestly enjoyed it more than the eel that I got from a dedicated unagi restaurant.
- The yakitori at New Torigin was amazing, especially the chicken skin. Perfectly charred and crispy.
As I mentioned before, Nanyo was the highlight of our trip. Despite being a small town, it had it's own distinct feeling and cuisine, and I think it deserves more love. I definitely shouldn't have been able to book a last minute ryokan reservation during peak Cherry Blossom season.
- After arriving in Nanyo, we ate some dessert near the station nearby. We then took a train known as the Flower Nagai Line. On the train, you can see cherry blossoms, snowcapped mountains, and pass sleepy villages. We stopped at Koguwa Station.
- There is a famous soba restaurant close by. It was a 30 minute walk, but I was really in the mood for some soba. Unfortunately, we arrived, we found out that the shop is temporarily closed because the owner broke his arms. It was around this time when I think I spotted an eagle catching a snake.
- Fortunately, we still had some sweets leftover and the weather was perfect for walking. We walked to a spot which has a small cherry blossom festival. One of the trees there was over 1200 years old, yet it was still blooming strong!
- We took the Flower line back to Nanyo and checked into our ryokan, Morinoyu. We didn't see any English speakers in their staff, so my wife's basic Japanese was definitely helpful. Service was excellent, despite our communication barrier.
- For dinner, we went to 食楽亭 旭屋, which specializes in beef. Despite going to several more expensive restaurants, this was by far my favorite meal in Japan and one of the top two meals of my life. We had their specialty Shabu Shabu with their local Yonezawa beef. I don't think it was graded A5, but I honestly don't think that mattered as it still had wonderful marbling and melted in your mouth. To eat it, you take a thin slice of beef and wrap it around a bunch of spring vegetables. The mild freshness and crispness of the vegetables perfectly compliments the fatty beef. It's kind of like eating a Korean ssam but in reverse, which is so much better because you primarily taste the beef instead of the vegetable.
- After dinner, we walked around Eboshiyama Park, nearby. It's a hill with hundreds of cherry trees in full blossom. It also features the largest torii made out of a single stone. It was after dark, but they light it up at night which gives the park its own sort of beauty.
- We went back to our ryokan and soaked in the public onsens. The water had a slight sulphurous smell though I think that actually enhances the authenticity of the spring water.
- The following day, we went back to Eboshiyama Park. During the daytime, the park was even more beautiful. It felt like I was walking in Shinkai film. The best part is that there were the perfect number of people. Sometimes, you feel like you have to the park to yourself, but there are still enough to make the atmosphere more lively.
- We went up the Hakone Ropeway. Fortunately the sky was clear and we got to see Mt. Fuji on Owakudani. We didn't have time to complete the entire loop, so we turned back from there. If you're in a hurry like us, I definitely recommend taking the bus instead of the train and cable car, which were painfully slow. We barely made it to our ryokan before their last check in time.
- Our ryokan we stayed in was Yama No Chaya. Despite being highly recommended on this sub, I personally would not recommend it. Don't get me wrong. We had fun, and it met 90% of our expectations, but it's fair to expect that extra 10% after spending almost $700. Our meals were rushed, especially breakfast. Our attendant kept on reminding us that check out was at 10:00 am despite having plenty of time. I think they were short-staffed because he always had the expression of being overwhelmed. One of the public onsens had a thin layer of oil in it, which likely came from a guest who didn't shower themselves properly. Our private onsen was beautiful, but they locked the door to the outside because there was construction underneath.
- The Open Air Museum featured a lot of interesting sculptures, and we took the bus there this time.
- Fushimi Inari is as lovely as it appears on social media. We arrived at 9 am, which we thought was late, but there were fewer people than I expected, especially in the upper area.
- Roketsu is a fun studio where you can make your own indigo textiles. It is much easier than it looks to make something beautiful.
- Saiho-ji is a Japanese Buddhist temple that features a large garden covered in 120 types of moss. Due the limited reservations, our visit was quite peaceful.
- My favorite overall dinner in Kyoto was Soba-no-Mi Yoshimura. They have an English menu, but their Japanese menu has a lot more options, such as the 100% buckwheat soba that I ordered. My wife got the traditional nishin (herring) soba, which was also delicious. The best part was honestly the tempura.
- We had a couple of traditional Kyoto-style kaisekis, and both were excellent. Iharada was a great overall value and service was impeccable. Kiyama was more of a splurge, but also worth the price. Every other tasting menu I've experienced has aimed to present dishes with a wow factor, but each course here elegantly embodied delicacy.
- I've never seen dolphins so active than the ones at the Osaka Aquarium.
- Hajime is a 3 Michelin star restaurant where I had the most exquisite meal I've ever had in my life. Every course was a work of art. I posted a full review on /finedining.
- We had Okonomiyaki and yakisoba at Ajikuraya. It was a tiny fraction of the price of our previous dinner, but equally as memorable.
- Our last stop was Koyasan, a mountain with a Buddhist temple settlement. Honestly, at this point, we were all templed-out, but it still offered a distinct experience from the other ones we've visited.
- We stayed at Ichijo-In, which is a functioning temple and lodging of pilgrims. We aren't religious, but almost all of the other guests seemed to be quite serious. The walls of the temple are quite thin, and it got quite chilly in April, so I'd be cautious if you want to book this in the winter.

2023.06.09 04:46 Barious_ My girlfriend of 3 years is going to leave me F18 M19
My girlfriend and I met back when we were in high school, different highschools. She lives in Canada, and I in Florida. She has always had it rough, poor growing up, fucked up family, small town that often discriminated against her and her family. We met through a mutual friend, and our dating was more of a friendship than anything at first. Eventually we grew to love each other. Once we weee finally getting settled the first bombshell went off; her mom overdosed from cocaine. My girlfriend found her. My girlfriend, we’ll just call her P, was distant after that. Naturally, of course. Despite my attempts to cheer her up, she was very depressed. She and her dad obviously didn’t want to stay in that house so they moved in with her grandparents, in City A. It wasn’t good, but it was better. However, this didn’t last; everyone grieves differently, but her father chose to turn to drugs. Again. If it wasn’t clear earlier, she grew up in a drug house. This time he was using “Hiesenberg’s blue,” methamphetamine. He eventually grew distant, too. Left alone with her grandparents, she had nobody really to take care of her. A roof over her head was nice, but there was no schooling, and minimal food. For her birthday she asked me to send her beef jerky. Eventually she moves in with her aunt, in city B. Things get better. She gets therapy, antidepressants, and goes to school. This is about a year in, mind you. She makes friends, she seems happy. She always has smoked a little weed, but now it’s a regular thing. I thought it was sexy sometimes so I didn’t mind, plus it seemed to help her mood. Things stay good for a while, friends come and go but that’s part of school. Eventually she feels overwhelmed. She wants to take a break. We talk, I love her and tell her it will be ok. It was more than that but the point is that we stay together. All the time she tells me “L, if I did want to Be with you, I wouldn’t be talking to you right now.” I think she’s perfect. I often wonder why a 10/10 is with a 4/10 like me. We stay healthy for a while. We stop sleeping on call because it’s eating all of her wifi data. That’s fine, it was the same with me for a while too. Then she stops texting me completely after 10pm. No calling either. Then she only calls me every 2 days. Then every two or 3. Until 3 weeks ago. She gets grounded, she’s finishing highschool now, so no it’s not weird. I’m normal, I promise, don’t call Chris Hanson. Anyways, she told me she skipped gym. So she’s grounded. I think “ok, understandable, gym sucks ass.” I figured a week, 2 at most of being grounded. Eventually I cave and ask her friend K&J what’s going on. They tell me that P got caught skipping class, and they searched her and found weed. She got suspended for two days. Because of that, her aunt finds out about her “addiction” (I know that’s not what it is, don’t yell at me, she just smokes a lot.) K&J go on to tell me that P has been skipping out on them, blowing them off to go smoke during lunch. Given my girlfriends traumatic past, I understand wanting the escape that a high brings. While this wasn’t good, it eased my mind. I knew she wasn’t cheating, which was my suspicion. Yet again, I find out that this isn’t the whole story. J&K knew that P had a smoking buddy. They didn’t want to betray her trust, but seeing the situation, and empathizing with the distraught boyfriend, they cave. I didn’t badger them or anything either, just wanted to know what my gf was up to. I missed her, after all. My gf apparently has a crush on a guy named Eddie. Fuck you, Eddie, first of all. He’s been flirting with my girlfriend. Staring at her, and helping her get weed. Apparently this has been going on for months. About the same time when my gf stopped sleeping on call. Coincidence?! I wish, dude. She likes him because weed, and he’s actually there. He’s in person. He’s not 4,000 miles away. Part of me understands. The rest of me is angry. he gave her stickers. She put them on her phone. The pictures from our anniversary’s. For my birthday. Her daily selfies. They’re on her phone. It’s been under my nose this whole time. J&K will confront her Monday. They say that she talks about both of us. Good things. She’s never cheated on her ex’s. I will be confronting her Monday night. She’s been ghosting everyone. Well, almost everyone. Can you guess who she’s not ghosting? Eddie. She got her phone taken when she was grounded. J&K say that she’s using her moms old phone to talk to Eddie. Nobody else. I’m left on read at 7:30 every morning. They haven’t kissed, or fucked, or anything like that. So I’m told. I’ve looked at boobs before during our relationship, I’m not going to lie. I don’t think that’s the same though. Boobs aren’t a person. Boobs don’t give me stickers or buy me food. As far as I’m concerned, her and I are still together. I feel betrayed. I was lied to, for who knows how long. But this is the only time something like this has ever happened. I’m mad, but my heart has already forgiven her. All of this to say, what do I do? I’m so lost. I love P with all my heart. My schooling, my career building, it’s all for her. I finished trade school a few months ago, and I started my real job this week. I’m burnt and stained and drained of all my energy. All for her. For us. For the future with the girl of my dreams. What do I do? I don’t want to lash out. I don’t want to hurt her. I’ve tried loving her harder than I ever have for the past 3 weeks and I get ghosted in response. I know she cares. I want her back. I haven’t lost her yet, but I feel like I’m fighting a losing battle. To those who cared to read, what do you think? To those who have more experience, what do I do? How do I fix this? To those who need a TLDR: top 2 least favorite animals? Aardvarks suck ass. Also bugs and fish dont count, they’re not real.
Thank you all for your time.
